I'm training with weighted calisthenics for now 7 months ( specially pull up, dips and push up) and you're totally right : My front lever increased for 5-6 second, I can do more muscle up in one set and the craziest thing is that I can put more weight on the bench press than my friend who is in the gym since 3 years only because I do weighted dips. And of course I made more muscle gains than just train with my own body weight. So I totally agree with you.

My point is I've been lifting for close to 30 years and can't think of anything he's said in the plethora of videos of his i've watched that I don't agree with. Now I'm also a lifetime natty so I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I'm very impressed with the knowledge he's gained in the time he's been training. Of course, 20 years ago youtube wasn't a factor, but thank god it is now. Young lifters, take advantage and watch his videos and take notes....you'll save yourself years of trial and error.
I went from 170lbs to 240lbs with calisthenics. Haven't lifted weights for about 15 years. Pullups dips pushups rows ring curls ring tricep extensions squats lunges and various versions of each, using different leverages, rep/set ranges and tempos, 4-5x a week. Here in NYC you can go to any park and find guys doing calisthenics who are bigger and stronger than most guys lifting weights at the gym.
@FitzChivalry Farseer - a lot of gymnasts dont bench they mainly do variations on planche push ups n dips and can bench their bodyweight so it is possible
Good for you but I see no reason to do calisthenics alone unless there is some calisthenics olympics out there where you can compete. If calisthenics worked for bodybuilding, some serious bodybuilders would be doing it but there are none. It's definitely better than nothing but if you want a great physique then there are more effective means out there.
Hey Alex, here's a tip for your weighted pushups - if you put the dipping bars on the lowest pin height on the rack, and rest your feet on the bench, you can effectively perform neutral grip weighted pushups and get a really great stretch at the bottom!
I love weighted push ups! They feel much more natural, I can rest-pause them, I can fully retract and protract my scapula. If you are reading this and you prefer bench press, by all means, do what you love, but I’m definitely a weighted push up guy

The previous week I was able to do my first set of weighted pull-ups (beginner, 8 months of training experience). Got excited, did couple sets with 5kg plate, and then even managed to do 2 reps with 10kg. When I did the last set, just bodyweight, I felt like I was flying on the bar (in comparison to weighted sets). Amazing feeling. Thank you Alex, you've been my inspiration since day 1 of my training. Amazing Video. Opened my eyes. For example my best gains for my lats i made by added weights pull ups. I really wonder why i never used this principle, as well for my other Muscle groups. Thanks for the video mate. (thumbs up)
I agree definitely a great hack for real progress. I've been doing a dips with about 15 to 20 lbs ofsand in a backpack and can only do 5 to 7. Then 2 days later I just did a 30 dips effortlessly with just bodyweight which I hadn't reached before. Normally 26 was the most I could do straining. So I'm definitely loving the faster strength progression.
I am doing a novice program and I switched barbell rows to wide grip weighted pull ups and switched close grip bench to weighted dips. It’s working great!
Can't forget about the carry over to explosive calisthenics either. Weighted Pull-Ups will also help your muscle-ups become more explosive. Explosive Plyometric Push-Ups can potentially help your bench. It's all about surfing the Force Velocity curve.

I'm 100% agree with you. I started weighted calisthenics when I saw a lot a street lifter having correct static skills without training them. Since then I love it and it's 50% of my training now. The only cons is that I notice that I gained more weight and therefore I'm a little bit heavier (even tho I'm stronger) and that can be bad for static skills.

The max i can put on right now is 16kg until I can, but another weighted plate. But man, does it feel good in a strange way. My reps have dropped, halved even, and my body is reacting to it very well as when I performed bodyweight only variables I.e pull ups push ups not only can I do them effortlessly but also more explosive to right now I can perform 15 clean pull ups and 23 dips cleanly until my form breaks down. And I can't weight (yes, I'm punny like that) to add more weights on my pull-ups for more results.

This is major for me. I joined the gym last month and just started last week with calisthenics. Now I'm gunna go straight to weight calisthenics. I'm gunna buy a pull up-dip bar for my house. Are weighted vests good for the pull up, dip, and push up? Instead of the weights hanging from the waist in your video. Thanks again bro. I can feel gains coming.
The vest works but I always prefer the weights hanging from your hips because it’s more difficult and it feels like you are literally being pulled down into the ground, but vest is more as if you were heavier like all of a sudden you became fat or something.
I did this for years, from 15 to about 30. I am 52 now and you have to modify when you age. Exercise is a lifetime thing and it has to change with you.
I once read somewhere that moving the body through space exercises "calisthenics" have the highest neuromuscular activation, followed by compound exercises with free weights, followed by compound exercises on machines, followed by isolation exercises with free weights, followed by iso exercise on machines being the least. my opinion you might not agree, but squats and deadlifts in my opinion, is a calisthetics excersise, so if dont have time to work out every muscle group just do this. pull ups, dips, squats, deadlifts and chrunches, and you will have a great physice and they are all ez to overload. i use them in my routine and its one if the more fun excersises. so i highly recommend.
Friendly Topic Request: Favorite calisthenics exercises for those who have already built up a strength base practising squats, deadlifts, presses, et cetera, but want to expand their base in a way that carries (maybe) over to the aforementioned exercises? I do use weighted chins in the gymnastic rings and LOVE those. Have been doing them for a long time, too. I assume you would recommend weighted dips and pistol squats with a weight added. Maybe do a list of 5 highly recommended such exercises. Thanks.
I got tired of asking for a spot at the gym on the benchpress so i switched to weighted dips, recently tried some dead bench and my bench press went from 245 to 295
I've found that weighted calisthenics build strength but not necessarily muscular endurance. So i break my training into weighted lifts for building strength as well as body weight calisthenics for higher reps to build the endurance.
I love callisthenics and do weighted sometimes. I build more muscle with callisthenics than with weight lifting despite being in gym for 4 years. My body is forced to get strong with its own weight
I only do weighted pause dips, Ring dips, tuck planche dips and handstand push ups on the wall for the pressing part of my training, and i have better shoulders chest and triceps than most of my friends wich are into bodybuilding ❤️
No bullshit man every word Alex says about weighted calisthenics is true. Like first being that weighted calisthenics have higher carryover transfer to skill based calisthenics. Like i found out on the lately i been able to do one arm push ups without even specially training for it directly. Because i do heavy 30kg weighted ring dips i also found out that i could do a 5 sec l sit hold without even specially training for it. And my bench increased from 80kg to 100kg 220lbs. It also gives a heck alot of more work capacity in other movements weather being skill based calisthenics or powerlifting or oly lifting. Third being you can get very big from it like Alex says i mean look at some guys like Adam Raw he is very big and does over his bodyweight dips.
The other upside to weighted push ups is the core and quads are working too, and you can go deeper. Also, static calisthenics transition to high reps too and are really impressive looking btw dude your skill work looks fucking awesome. The weighted oap and lever were perfecto. I do use weighted chins in the gymnastic rings and LOVE those. Have been doing them for a long time, too. I assume you would recommend weighted dips and pistol squats with a weight added. Maybe do a list of 5 highly recommended such exercises. Thanks.
I think with weighted calisthenics you can generate powerlifting strength too if you do it 5x5 or 3x8
You’re a damn beast! I like the video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Mirin the Rasputin look, man. I want to grow my hair out like that too, but it's too thick and wavy so I don't think it'd look as good.
Awesome video man. I've thought about this but u just nailed it!
I love callisthenics and do weighted sometimes. I build more muscle with callisthenics than with weight lifting despite being in gym for 4 years. My body is forced to get strong with its own weight
Let‘s Go for a novice calisthenics program. Would appreciate it!

Weighted calisthenics are the way to strenght and muscle. Compound movements and consistency are the best!
Try the ez-vest. Weighted calisthenics made super easy! Great for these pandemic times.
love your philosophy on a lot of this
Ima get me a Weighted vest for my rings right away. Great info thanks bro!
Great vid. Thanks for uploading!
Man your content... is just amazing !!
Man alpha destiny looks like a LOTR character with this hairstyle and facial hair
The other upside to weighted push ups is the core and quads are working too, and you can go deeper. Also, static calisthenics transition to high reps too and are really impressive looking btw dude your skill work looks fucking awesome. The weighted oap and lever were perfecto. I don't get how people can diss you man. They're just jelly
I was surprised when I saw the OAP and front levers. Insane!
Simplicity is the key to brilliance.
Just got a belt and started weighted pull ups and dips.....never thought i could use it for the push up!!!
I like you direct, non magic approach!
Your current image is your best look so far this year. Mr.gq.
I appreciate you recording outside, Alex. 👍
Front lever holds was really impressive
