    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Thornton Melon (Rodney Dangerfield) is concerned that his son Jason (Keith Gordon) is unsure whether to go to college, so the uneducated self-made millionaire encourages him by signing up as a student as well. As Jason tries to establish himself among his peers and make the diving team, Thornton falls for a pretty professor (Sally Kellerman) and gets others do his schoolwork for him. When the suspicious dean (Paxton Whitehead) finds out, Thornton needs to show he can get by on his own.

    Dr Barbay is pretty on point about them essentially selling admissions, but does he ever once have a comeback for the whole “Thornton has experience, not an education” argument?!

      No, and if you pay attention, the Dr. keeps seeming to brush it off because Thorton is the only one to make the point and the Dr. doesn't take him seriously already.
      Would've been better (in real life situation) had Dean Martin made the point also, but he only cared about the money (as administrators do) and this is a comedy.
      Considering he runs a very successful clothing retail business, it's a no brainer to also have the ability to say you have a successful businessman affiliated with the university (notwithstanding the donation) as a selling point to future prospective students (networking, potential landing spot for jobs after graduation, etc). Had this just been some trust fund kid getting in because dad made a donation, Dr. Barbay would've had a better point.

    And the most amazing thing is that when he donates big amounts of money to non-profit organizations, he can have an amazing tax deduction on his IRS forms and he can get even better revenues by donating money... a lot of people prefer donating their belongings to get amazing tax credits... Melon is amazing and he knows the real world out there :)

      I have three university degrees, and I used to think I wanted to spend my professional life in academia. I'm really disappointed by what's happened to higher education. That's why I love this movie so much. It was made before academia went really crazy, but it satirizes it perfectly without being mean spirited.

      I must’ve been an outlier because a majority of my professors were actual professionals in their field. Business Law teacher was an actual corporate lawyer, HR class as an actual HR for a company, hell even my fun elective wine tasting class was a sommelier who taught for fun!

      @@alvexok5523 No, they aren't. I have two undergraduate degrees, Economics and Data Analytics. For my Economics degree, all my professors had real world experience but for my Data Analytics degree (Business Degree), only one of my professors in my major had real world experience. Also, for all my electives, zero of my profs were anything but academics. I graduated this year btw.

      ​@@roamer1389 The only things that really set Barbay off early in the movie were: 1) that Melon bought his way into the school without any qualifications, 2) advising students to bribe elected officials and pay the mob back, and 3) cheating on his midterms. He had a point about all three, and his exam was kids play compared to what would be done to other cheating subjects.

    Though the film is poking away at the "snooty professor" (concerned about ethics..."admission requirements"! Bah! Who needs those if we're talkin' $$!!) it entirely missed the real problems; if Monsanto gives lots of $$, do they get to determine WHAT YOU TEACH AT "YOUR" SCHOOL???!!!

      I imagine that someone who works on the real world, and doesn’t get by on regurgitated useless academia, would want his money to be used to improve people’s lives in fields that were helpful to him. So therefore they wouldn’t want to invest in a building that teaches left handed puppetry.
