    As usual, your videos have saved me Painless360 I've spent almost 3 hours today trying to make my new taranis receive voltage data from a new dr4-2 and naze. Found your video after almost giving up and seems I have a naze that requires telemetry inversion. Also my naze oddly has pin6 around the middle unlike yours which has it at the end of the pin row. I also didn't have to plug the negative from the dr4 into the negative pin on the telemetry pins on the naze, only the green wire is plugged into pin 6. Odd also that my naze doesnt have to be armed to pass telemetry data once lipo is plugged in Voltage telemetry is being happily passed onto taranis. Many thanks for your videos Lee!

      Altitude Aerials If you look closely at the video around the 4:17 time, you should be able to see that he DOES have the telemetry connected to the middle pin on the bottom (pin 6). He has a GPS (i think) connected to the pin on the end also using a green wire.

    Thanks for the video.
    I changed from Baseflight to Cleanflight on my quad and had problems getting telemetry working after the change even though I had everything configured properly on my Taranis with OpenTX 2.1 as well as in Cleanflight.
    Turned out that I had to delete all the old Baseflight telemetry sensors in the model config on the Taranis and then rediscover them to get it all to work again.

    You helped me a lot when setting this up, man! But I'm not quite sure about the DF13 connector type.. I recently ordered one from BG but it doesn't fit! I had to make some adjustments by hand to plug it in.
    I morely think, it is a 4 pin 1.5mm JST plug, although there might be different versions.
    Thanks for what you are doing, you are getting a lot of people getting started with this hobby!

    Great set of videos! I used this one to set my Flip32+D4R a while back, but after moving from Cleanflight to BorisB's betaflight telemetry stopped working. Or at least I noticed that it was not working.
    Re-did all the settings via GUI but the CLI command above was returning an error. Finally had the idea to check a cmd dump and found a "set telemetry_inversion = off" line.
    Tried "set telemetry_inversion = on" (rather than = 1), et voila, problem solved, ça marche!

    Well, I've got a ZMR250 with Taranis 9D+ and D4R-II RX, and I did have my Telemetry screen working PERFECTLY. Today I was looking at FrSky's site and realized that my old original Taranis firmware was very outdated, so I updated to the latest 2.1.6 version. I had saved my models so that wasn't a problem. However, when I long pressed the page button to go to the Telemetry screen, everything was gone ... not setup! I originally had NUMS in 2 lines: Cel, RSSI, Batt and line 2 was Cels (individual cell volt) and 2 other parameters which I no longer remember. I've been searching on how to set this all back up again, but most of the tutorials are based on the original firmware. Makes me want to kick myself for updating the firmware!

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check the videos later in the series where we did updates on the new features of 2.1.. It's in there.. Best of luck!

    • @billsomrak
      @billsomrak 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got tired of trying to make it work. So, I back flashed to v2.0.9, but then when I tried to reload my ZMR250 racer model (setup) it said "Incompatible" ... so now I have to go through the entire bloody setup again, starting with binding to my D4R-II .. which means I'm going to have to cut a bunch of zipties and undo my install of hardware on the ZMR .. what a fiasco!

  • @DannyCruzCreations
    @DannyCruzCreations 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh wow. Thanks for this. There is so much conflicting information out there for telemetry on FrSky and Naze32/Cleanflight. I got mine working using the telemetry port before I saw this, but I want to do it this way rather. I see you are feeding the accelerometer values, but I suppose it would also feed voltage values if set up in Cleanflight, right?
    I used set telemetry_inversion = 1 for my setup, but first, I'm not sure if it's actually needed for the telemetry port or only for soft-serial pin 6... Regardless, it worked for me without using the inversion. We'll see what happens when I set it up your way.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Danny Cruz Anything that the Naza32 can see (voltage, acc, GPS, speed etc.) will come out via the telemetry port.
      A lot of the articles on the net are getting out of date and as Cleanflight gets better and better the implementation of key things like FrSky Telemetry is changing to. Don't forget - some boards have the inversion circuitry on them, some don't.
      Best of luck with it.

    Thanks for your help.

    • @Painless360

      you can't use both at the same time. This is in the documentation. Use the default pins for telemetry if you want LEDs.. Best of luck!

    Sorry for that.
    I meant to say that, what are the utility of the uart1, uart2 & softSerial? What type of communication is used here? Is it Serial communication? I am curious about some practical use of these ports.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Priyabrata Saha it's worth having a look at some of the build series to see how these ports are used. I2c is used to connect sensors like barometric and magnetic sensors, uarts are multi purpose and used for telemetry (MSP and MAVlink among others) as well as serial connections to sensors like GPS and data to configure 'smart' peripherals like video transmitters. All of the options for the software you are using is normally in the ports tab of Cleanflight/Betaflight...

  • @Duaneoca
    @Duaneoca 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is great, thanks for creating it! Is it also possible to get telemetry with the x8r? Also, if you enable softserial do you lose the ability to run LEDs?

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Duane Pinkerton If you use the pins that the LEDS use then you would.
      The x8r uses Smart Port (see the 'Introduction to FrSky Telemetry' in the playlist. I am sure that the implementation of Smart Port natively in Cleanflight will come soon. Until then you need - github.com/frank26080115/cleanflight/wiki/Using-Smart-Port
      Happy flying!

    Thanks again for another great video.
    Just curious. Previously you did a video on the voltage telemetry, which connected up to the telemetry pins beside the buzzer.
    If you are using this voltage telemetry, can you still use this acc telemetry also?
    Is this just another way or doing the voltage, and getting the other telemetry, or do you have to choose which one you want?

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Ray There are two videos in the playlist - the other one covers RSSI. Using vBat and telemetry are two different things and they connect to two different sets of pins on the Naze32. There are two options for telemetry and I show my preference in this video. Hope that makes sense!
      Best of luck with the build!

    Do you have a post on how to set up A1 an A2 on the Taranis?
    Thanks.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hoggdoc The voltage will swing wildly when in flight as you pull current. You could create a virtual sensor and try to 'average' the value over a short time to reduce the dips due to the throttle increasing but it is basically a very poor indicator of how much power is left in the battery and useless IMHO on a quad....

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used those and they seem to be good. Still get the voltage jumping under load. I've not seen that happen just sat on a bench though. Dodgy vbat on the Naze32 you have?

    I am slightly confused about the DF13 cable:
    1. Can I just cut the wires I am not using for a cleaner-ish build?
    2. Where did you find that cable? I have only been able to find the 4 to 4 pins - did you solder this yourself?
    Great videos by the way!

    • @Painless360

    Hello, I like your tutorial videos very much, they are all pro.
    I experience the following:
    I have naze32. (I run INAV rewritten cleanflight) but that should not be definitely the issue:
    I succesfully set up the 1-wire telemetry via pin6 and soft serial.
    there is one telemetr value which does not "recover" on some cases : the Frsky "Cvlt" value.
    When I disconnect the batt on the quadcopter, I also have to switch radio on-off to have that specific value refreshed again, when battery connected back on.
    Other values do "recover", refresh after this, but "Cvlt" not.
    I really like the solution with the soft serial. Would it refresh vith another method ot 2 wire connected to telemetry pins (beside the buzzer) to the FRSKY D4R-II? but then there is the disadvantage of not seeing teloemetry when not armed, is that correct?

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would try to recreate the problem in Cleanflight. INav is a fork for the testing of the improved GPs code (see our video on how Open Source Works) best of luck..

    Do you know if the X4RSB RX will recieve telemetry with its SmartPort lead using the same ch6 pins as the D4R-II does?

    Hi, i have the d4r-2 sb (2015) it's a bit different in that it has (AIN, -, +, S) on the 4 port connector, which one goes to pin 5 on the naze. Also can i just check this is correct: on the naze, gps tx is 3 (to rx on gps unit), gps rx is 4, Lights are 5, d4r to 6, osd to rx and tx. Many thanks, would be lost without these vids

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gavin Ferry If you follow the videos in the series you should be fine. The port setup is changing all the time in Cleanflight so it may look a little different when you get to it.
      Best of luck.

  • @paulwilliamson5783
    @paulwilliamson5783 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks so much for making these videos, they have been really helpful. I'm having trouble following this one though - how is the NAZE board detecting the voltage from the battery pack? Is it reading it from the ESC you have plugged into the servo pins? (the vbatt pins next to the buzzer aren't being used).
    I have an identical setup but can't get the telem stream working for love or money.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need vBat connected and configured (see our Naze32 series for more detail). This video works for the D series 'legacy' FrSky Telemetry, if using X series SmartPort then connect the TX, RX pins on the UART to the S.Port pin on the RX and make sure you select SmartPort telemetry in the setup. Best of luck!

  • @basebilljr07
    @basebilljr07 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    in the beginning of the video you said you need the black and green wire but you only used the green wire I did everything you did in the video and it's not working do I need to connect the black wire to a ground?

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +basebilljr07 It worked as we did it in the video. We were using OpenTX2.0.17, later versions changed the way that telemetry worked and needs you to 'discover' the telemetry available before they can be used. Best of luck!

    • @basebilljr07
      @basebilljr07 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Painless360 yes I knew that much but I got it working I had to change the setting in clean flight ports from the 9600 setting to the automatic setting and then it worked

    • @basebilljr07
      @basebilljr07 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tim Donovan the radio has to be paired to the receiver with both needed on then in the actual radio go to the tale page which is telemetry and highlight scan for sensors and push the enter button

    • @basebilljr07
      @basebilljr07 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tim Donovan in the ports tab on clean flight did you enable soft serial and change the tab to Frsky and automatic I had the exact same problem and that was what fixed it

    • @basebilljr07

      yea i found the notes and it says the reading needs to be calibrated. you discharge the battery with the fc plugged into clean flight, take the reading that clean flight got for the mah, then you charge the battery and take that reading. then some math magic I don't remember the exact formula and you plug that into the current settings in configuration menu.

    It would be nice if you could make a quick tip video - Naze32/CC3D Cleanflight Connections Combinations Overview that work and doesn't work like Naze32 (PPM,GPS, MinimOSD, LED, Bluetooth, Frsky Telemetry, Buzzer) i think some Combinations doesn't work because of conflicts in ports - like Telemetry Port and USB

      Snappy There is some great documentation on the Cleanflight pages.
      Bottom line - if you want anything apart from basic OSD and GPS co-ordinates displayed on that basic OSD, get a Naze32/Flip32.

  • @mitchoi3581
    @mitchoi3581 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    There must be something I'm doing wrong. I've done everything in your playlist but I can't configure the VBAT monitoring. I've connected 1 wire to a positive on the PDB, I'm running out of connections so I connected 2 wires on 1 positive slot, 1 is for ESC and the other is the one supposed to connect to VBAT + on Naze32. However, I can't get battery voltage working. Cleanflight shows 25.5v no matter how what the voltage scale value is.

    • @mitchoi3581
      @mitchoi3581 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, I've changed the voltage scale value to 50 and Cleanflight now shows 16.5v, I still can't get it to show on my Taranis. When I enter Discover New Sensors, I'm not getting anything. I only have:
      1. SWR = 1
      2. RSII = 90dB
      3. A1 = 5.1v
      4. A2 = 7.3v

    Is it possible to do this with clean-flight on a CC3D board? I don't think there is a Tx inversion option from the CC3D, but perhaps using the SP2UART converter (S.Port to UART) from Frsky would fix the inversion issue?

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Smith No, as far as I know the only telemetry you can get with the CC3D is to use the analogue telemetry ports connected directly to the flight battery.
      Hope this helps.

    • @DavidSmithwv
      @DavidSmithwv 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Painless360 I know that telemetry can be sent from the flexi port for OPlink wirless telemetry wiki.openpilot.org/display/WIKI/CC3D+-+Atom+GPS+Setup+for+Telemetry .
      So I thought maybe with clean flight's frsky protocol, this could be done, the only trick would be inverting the signal as you do in the naze32 board. since cc3d doesn't have a tx inverter, I thought the UART to s.bus converter would take car of that. It would be nice to get GPS coords (to taranis) from a mini250 for backup lost model insurence, like when a crash ejects a battery, and the buzzer won't work (which happened to me recently).

    Hey Painless! Nice video! I'm having trouble fixing the telemetry on the taranis on OpenTX 2.1. I've followed your steps in this video but without any luck. I've read that it changed some in OpenTX 2.1 compared to 2.0. I don't get cels or cell value, I don't even get any Readings on VFAS. Got any suggestions? FC:Naze32 Radio: Taranis Receiver: D4R-II

      Painless360 yeah i can imagin that... normally i just need to setup my taranis radio so that ch8 represents Rssi. via the ppm input the pixhawk normally passes that tru to my minimosd thats connected to telemetry port on the pixhawk, and then minimosd extra should understand it, but i cant get it to work. do i missed a setting in missionplanner to pass tru the ch8 data to the telemetry port ore something i forgot? Thanks for your reply

      Painless360 i finally got it working. on the pixhawk u dont need to filter te sbus rssi from the frsky receiver to an analog, i just put it in on the sbus port on the pixhawk, in full param list put rssi pin on pin 103 and then set the rssi range to 3.3 volts, works perfectly.
      Thanks again for your support.
      Now the next thing to figure out is how i can pas tru a channel to my minimosd so i can use a switch to navigate tru the different osd panels... i cant get it to work.

    Thanks ! i need to clear one doubt and no one has give me an answer on mini quad group ou in my portuguese group. I had VBAT monitor to Micromosd (i have on screen voltage, status (armed or disarmed) and i could tune my pids on the quad by stick. I changed to taranis, i connected the telemetry pins to d4II and activated telemetry on naze FRSky. Now i have taranis singing voltage and information when armed. ok... BUT i lost osd information, battery is valued is freezed, does not recognize when i arm it (keeps disarmed on screen) and also i cant enter on PID tuning menu. The flight modes change when i switch on taranis, so its communicating, but voltage, sticks nothing. Is it possible to have at same time taranis information voltage and the microsmosd ?!?!? How ???

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ricardo Oliveira Having too many telemetry ports won't work on the Naze32. All part of the fun. You need to use the UART shared with the USB port for the MinimOSD and remember to unplug it when connecting it to a PC. That way the MSP telemetry will be used by the MinimOSD when the USD port isn't.. Hope that helps..

    It seems a shame that you do not seem able to get the Lipo voltage using this method, or if you can I have not found how to do it. Does anyone know differently ?
    I know how to get the voltage using the dedicated pins on the Naze but the D4R-II only has one serial input pin so you to choose which set of data that you want so see.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      UKHeliBob You should get the voltage over telemetry is you have vBat option setup on the board. See the other video in the series. Have you setup this configuration and not seeing the voltage but seeing everything else?
      Happy flying!

    • @Bob_Burton
      @Bob_Burton 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Painless360 Thanks for the reply. The telemetry config is working OK through SoftSerial because I can see the X/Y/Z acceleration values on the Taranis telemetry screen. VBAT is enabled in Cleanflight but both Cells and Vfas show 0.0 on the Taranis.
      This is a new Naze board and I have not previously set up voltage monitoring on it using the normal output pin but I have had it working on other Naze boards. I wanted to use the SoftSerial method to keep the wiring simple and so that I could see the Lipo voltage without the Naze being armed.
      Which data item shows the pack voltage on your Taranis when using SoftSerial telemetry ? Like many things in the Naze setup there is probably something simple that I have missed but if I know that it can work I will keep looking.

    • @Painless360

      Can you see the Battery voltage displayed in Cleanflight with the board and battery connected?

    • @Bob_Burton
      @Bob_Burton 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Painless360 No, the voltage shows as 0V on the setup tab
      To summarise :
      On the Configuration tab of Cleanflight VBAT is ticked, as is SOFTSERIAL and TELEMETRY. The telemetry and softserial settings are obviously working as a can see the X, Y and Z acceleration data on the Taranis.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then something isn't right with the FC, get the vBat working in Cleanflight GUI first so you can see the voltages and then look at the telemetry.
      You should see the voltage in both..
      Best of luck..

      Well, currently the command is:
      set tlm_inversion = ON
      (CF 2.0.2)
      In case it has been changed again, one can find the setting in the dump (type "dump" in the commandline interface). So just search the dump for "inversion", and eventually you might find the new name of the setting.

    So maybe its not working as well as i thought =/
    Whenever I take my lipo out of my nighthawk 280 and try power it up again i get no beeping or responce once i've armed it. Using Baseflight i don't have this problem but as you know the telemetry doesn't work. Not the end of the world as the main reason i want telemetry is for the battery info.
    But if anyone knows why Cleanflight doesn't seem to want to save after i power down i would love to know. Sure its something silly i'm doing.

    Funny thing, I bought the Taranis with a d4rii and an additional d4rii so I could use it with two quadcopters. I got them both setup and working but I can control each model with the others model stored on the taranis. Should that be possible? I set them up as separate models and bound them and they are definitely two individual d4rii's. Is this normal? My spektrum satellites never behaved that way.

    My naze32 rev6 board came with a warning that said 'do not use cleanflight' so I'm using base flight. I wired things up as you suggest but in BaseFlight (the Chrome app) there is not a setting for softserial. "set serialrx_type=2" for Futaba SBUS mode

    Anyone have an idea what the difference is between A4 and Cells values? Looks like the Taranis radio is already setup for lipo voltage using A4 (low/crit warning levels).

    • @MiltonSmith
      @MiltonSmith 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The short of it is use CELLS. If your voltage level is not correct and needs to be calibrated there's a Cleanflight/Naze32 setting to adjust the scale, vbat_scale, which is what I adjusted. Background, A4 is voltage reading on the receiver that the receiver adds to telemetry as it's sent to your transmitter. If you power your receiver thru a BEC or DC to DC step-down then A4 is not very useful to measure battery life. Also contrary to some sources CELL telemetry value is worthless unless you have something plugged into the batteries balance connector measuring individual cell voltage like, frsky sp-flvs. I like the idea of warning on a single low cell but I didn't want the extra weight or complexity on my multi-rotor. Hope this is helpful.

    • @MiltonSmith
      @MiltonSmith 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The values for CELL/CELLS are set by the flight controller. The value for A2 is set by the receiver. CELL/CELLS values dropping out could be a bug in BetaFlight or a telemetry cable/connector problem. You might consider trying CleanFlight. If CleanFlight works consistently then BetaFlight likely has a telemetry bug you should report. If after switching to CleanFlight CELL/CELLS is still dropping out then try a different cable. Hopefully, this works.

    • @MiltonSmith
      @MiltonSmith 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Under the CleanFlight Configurator I enabled battery monitoring. I can use either the telemetry or soft serial pins successfully. I have the latest version of OpenTX installed on my Taranis. There is a new setup under Taranis for configuring FC data where the transmitter discovers the metadata supported by the FC. When u do that you see all supported telemetry metadata sent to the transmitter. You should see CELL/CELLS in a big list. Earlier versions of OpenTX shipped on Taranis radios sold about 1yr ago (when I purchased mine) all telemetry metadata is included on transmitter but unassigned if not supported. I have not tried BetaFlight yet so it could be a little different. I know some of the config settings r different

      ***** If your an acro/rate flyer then your probably not going too far anyway. If your doing laps by yourself periodically you will hear buzzer if u want to stay with BetaFlight. Don't forget to file a bug report with Betaflight developers. It's likely they already know but still more voices helps set the priority.

    Hey guys, got a quick question with the NAZE32 REV6.
    I got the board to output telemetry via softserial1(Pin6) to the D4R-ii/Taranis and I'm getting telemetry BUT ONLY WHEN ITS ARMED.
