  • Over the years, Murphy often shared the broadcast booth with sportscasters who weren't even born when he landed his first radio job. That was after World War II when he called the Muskogee Reds' games in his native Oklahoma. His first major league opportunity came in 1954 when he joined Curt Gowdy on Red Sox radio. In 1960 he left Boston for Baltimore before signing on with the Mets in 1962, thanks in a large part to Roger Maris. "I was told that the tape that won the Mets' job for me was my call of Maris' 60th home run in 1961," said Murphy. "He hit it against the Orioles off Jack Fisher."

I met Bob Murphy as a 29 year old in 2003 - he was actually coming out of a liquor store in Bayside, Queens with what I'm assuming must have been a couple of bottles of something in brown bags. I immediately asked if he needed help with the bags. He said, "No" and I wished him well, shook his hand and left him off telling him that I grew up listening to him with my father in the basement of my house. Fast forward only a couple of weeks later and I'm working a summer job (I'm a teacher) to make some extra cash for my upcoming wedding in December. I'm listening to the pre game on WFAN the day Murph announced his retirment - Gary Cohen says it must feel great being known as the "voice of summer" in New York. Murph then says (paraphrasing) - yes it is, just recently someone stopped me and told me how he grew up listening to me with his father on summer days and nights in the basement of his home. Glad I have that story!

That is awesome. I bet that gave you chills hearing him say that about you and your father. But, that's the way bob Murphy always was. He was like a friend or a passerby that gave respect no matter who you were or where you came from. They don't make guys like Murphy anymore.

That’s a great story! By any chance do you remember which liquor store in Bayside?

@@WhereTheyPlayForPay Don't know the name of it but it's right off the exit of 35 ave. on the Clearview. To the right of it, there's a Bagel store, to the left of it is the pizzeria. Literally across the street from the Clearview Expressway.

Brooklyn3955 thank you! I believe it is the liquor store near bagel boss off the clearview. I grew up nearby, so was curious! Thanks again for sharing your story!

As baseball season approaches I love to reminisce about when I was a kid. I was nearly 11 when the Mets won the World Series in 1969. I have been a Mets fan ever since. I know the Yankees have won 27 championships, but we Mets fans still love our team. The tradition of National league baseball in New York. The Dodgers and Giants walked away. Thank God ! It opened up a new era in New York. As much as the Yankees have won, there is a special feeling when The Mets do. Fans come out of hiding. Passionate crazy and appreciative. It's special. Watching Murph in his HOF induction speech brings me back to when I was a kid. Those hot summer nights listening to the radio. Lindsey Nelson Ralph Kiner and Bob Murphy. The voices of my childhood summer nights. Thank you Lindsey, Ralph and Bob. Rest in peace and thank you for the memories.

I have always been a Phillies fan, but Bob Murphy - even though he was the Mets' announcer - was one of the best I've ever heard. Same category as Harry Kalas and Chuck Thompson. Darn, I should have stopped the video at about the 8-minute mark to say, "And now, we're halfway..."

The absolute best my favorite baseball broadcaster of all time. Murph was the living embodiment of the Mets while he was here. Oh What a throw from the right field corner by Rod Gaspaaaar!

I've yet to hear a broadcaster better than Bob Murphy. I grew up spoiled listening to Ernie Harwell, Paul Carey and George Kell in Detroit. I've listened to a ton of other broadcasters such as Allen,, Barber, Buck, Scully, Elson, etc. None of them are better than Bob Murphy.

I know I commented below about actually meeting Bob Murphy, but revisiting his speech again, I'm content he mentioned the 1973 sayings of "Ya Gotta Believe!" and "It ain't over till it's over." I'm glad he cemented them as Met sayings because they are. It's amazing that arguably two of the greatest sayings in all of sports originated from that Met team in 73 and now everyone and their mother uses it in some form or another.
