When we were there in the spring it was in the mid to high 70s F the entire time, but the sun is much more intense than if you come from then northern US or Canada! Wear your sunblock! 😁

I love your itinerary and will do the same in October from NCL Epic. I’ve done some research but can you please answer a few questions, your experience is very much appreciated. When we get back to piazza Garibaldi from Pompeii we think we’ll catch the Metro line 2 to the Funicolare di Montesanto and get off at Marghen stop which is a 5 min walk to Castel Sant’Elmo - is this how you travelled there? Also were the steps back down easy to find and how long did it take you to walk down and get back to the port? We will stop for pizza once we reach the bottom of the stairs too. Thank you 😊

That is great! You will have such a good time. For The Castel, yes that is the same way that we got there. We actually only found the steps because Google Maps said that was the quickest way to walk down, which makes sense. So, as long as you use some sort of navigator like Google Maps and have it set on the "walk" feature, you should be set! And enjoy the pizza 😊🍕

How many hours would you say it was to go to Pompeii, explore the ruins, and get back to Naples? I will be on the Norwegian Escape this coming June, and it seems that it stops at the same ports, so I am taking notes of your excursion experiences so I can plan accordingly.

That is a good idea. For a frame of reference, we took the subway to the main station where we boarded the regional (Circumvesuviana) and got off right at the Pompeii Scavi station. We then took that regional train back to the main station in Naples and went on foot from there. The ride there took a bit longer, since we had to buy our tickets and stand in line for the train (you cannot buy them online, or at least you could not when we went), so that was about 1.5 hour's time to get from the ship to Pompeii. The ride back is 30-40 minutes. And then we saved about 30 minutes by getting our Pompeii tickets ahead of time so we didn't have to wait in the huge line. All told we got off the ship at 9AM, got to the park around 10:30, and then left the park around 1:30PM so we could spend some time in Naples too (our ship left port at 5PM, all aboard was 4:30). From port to park and back to port was about 5.5 hours with another 2 hours spent in Naples. We probably could have spent more time in Pompeii, but it was also our first time in Naples, so we wanted to see that too! Probably more information than you needed but wanted to lay it all out there!

Just curious,@@theseasonedexpats , what time of year did you go in? We are planning a trip in august and have some concerns around how bad lines might get...

@@millenialite1974 We went in the summer as well, but a bit earlier in the summer. August is the school holiday time for many European countries, so it will be VERY busy. However, if you buy your ticket online, you can basically skip the whole line and do not have to wait to purchase at ticket from the ticket office at the park. That is what we would recommend. Then just make sure you go to the entrance for people who have tickets once you get there (it is clearly marked). You can either print your ticket or just show it on your phone, no lines 😊

I did this last year and I did enjoy Pompeii but I felt like it was going to a theme park feel.
