Back in the days i remember that it wasn't received as well as their earlier records.
But even though it isn't as perfect as The Sham Mirrors, and while i prefer Garm over Vortex, time's a gentleman as always and people started to appreciate this phenomenal record more in recent years.
This is Arcturus at their best, make no mistake about it.

I remember spending 30 minutes trying to understand what the fuck Hellhammer was playing there. I don't know shit about notation but what I gathered was this:
Drums:
10x *1* 2 3 (snare hit on 1)
then 1 *2* 3 1 *2* 3 4 (snare hits on the 2s)
3x basic 6/8 beat (1 2 3 *4* 5 6 with snare hit on 4)
1 2 *1* 2 3 *1* 2 3 *1* (snare hits on the 1s except for the first one)
Then to the beginning:
10x *1* 2 3 (snare hit on 1)
then 1 *2* 3 1 *2* 3 4 (snare hits on the 2s)
3x basic 6/8 beat (1 2 3 *4* 5 6 with snare hit on 4)
(Not accounting kickdrum hits or the hi-hat openings.)
And the guitar:
4x *1* 2 3 then 1 2 3 4 5 (accent on 1) -> The grouping takes 17 beats to finish, so the next grouping starts at one of HH's 3s, causing them to be offset by 1 beat.
4x *1* 2 3 then 1 2 3 4 5 (accent on 1)
then some other stuff I'm too dumb to figure out at the moment.
The chorus has some weird time signatures going on too.

Try latter-day ulver (another one of garm's bands), "william blake" stuff and after. The earlier stuff is much like arcturus' early stuff... black metal :)

I appreciate the great dynamics, I really do, but even ignoring blatant mastering errors like an inconsistent volume level and a disconcerting click at the end of "Shipwrecked Frontieer Pioneers", the guitars just aren't prominent enough in the mix for the album to be very intense. Knut is one of metal's most underrated guitarists in my book, but that doesn't mean much when you can barely even hear the guy; he's shredding away like a pro in the aforementioned "Pioneer", but sadly, it's almost inaudibly buried beneath everything else." taken from a review on metal-archives
I still enjoy this album but it desperately needs a remaster/remix in order to allow the guitars to carry it since the keyboards are not the driving force of the album (unlike 'The Sham Mirrors' for example) even a fan-made one would be appreciated.
