Lyrics:
In the darkest times
Darkest fears are heard
From the safest places
Come the bravest words
Some make a quiet life
To keep this scared old world at bay
The dogs are howling on the street outside
So they close the curtains, hope they go away
And it's pressure from all sides
Coming down around our ears
Stuck in this room without a door
Scratched away at the walls for years
All we've got to show is the dust on the floor
And here it comes, a new dark age
I catch your eyes
Before they fall to the ground
We're running out of time, breath and steam
We're running down
They're burning witches
Up on punishment hill
Dying proof in the power of authority
To exact it's will
And it's pressure from all sides
Coming down around our ears
Stuck in this room without a door
Scratched away at the walls for years
All we've got to show is the dust on the floor
And we've broken our fingers
Broken our faith
Broken our hearts so many times
They can't be broken anymore
Scratched away at the walls for years
All we've got to show is the dust on the floor
And here it comes, a new dark age
Here it comes...
Adrian Borland was right up there with Ian Curtis. Both suicides. Maybe the best of the best just don’t want to live on this planet. They show their brilliance and leave. Tragic but beautiful. The Sound was (and is) one of this planet’s greatest bands. And let’s admit it, we kind of like that they never became big. It gives us that musicologist snob superiority. ;) Same with the Comsat Angels. And a few others. Bands before their time that just didn’t get famous. But were amazing without fame.
Fully concur about the genius of both The Sound and The Comsats. Up there with their contemporaries such as The Cure, New Order and The Bunnymen, but never got the commercial success that the others did. Not sure if that is really a bad thing however.....at least they have kept their integrity.
These guys are so much better than Joy Division
@@Fiveash-Artthat's like saying Van Gogh is better than Salvador Dali. How can the two even be compared?😂
@@flipdog74 It's called taste for the most part .... Although one can still compare Dali to Van Gogh objectively ... Technically Dali was a far superior draftsman if you're speaking in terms of purely traditional application. But, I'd agree with you that subjectively those arguments can be discounted. Despite what's popular when speaking about any sort of art, .. there are components that can be measured and objectively discussed. Some things are just done better. ... I've always felt Joy Division was overrated. So yes, I can compare the two bands. ... Not everything in art is 'subjective' .. there are truths that can be assessed .. objective truths. .... Caravaggio is a better painter than say something like Basquiat .. This is a truth .. and anyone who would fight that is either just a contrarian or someone who is purely ignorant and knows nothing about painting.
It's really amazing to think that both bands knew little to nothing about music theory yet still created beautiful music
it is true they are underrated...but be positive after 40 years people still remember this band as excellent and they are right.
Not really. They are just uheard of. The people who have heard the sound hold them in quite high regard so it ain't really underrated.
I am 14 years old and I like:)
And discovering them. At 47.
Honestly I've only just discovered The Sound a few years back, damn glad I did!
Discovering them at 50 !!!
I had the privilege to play as supoort act in the eighties whit my band 5CV ( Vooruit Ghent ) great band and lovely guys .Nice times backstage.
Did you ever play with Shriekback?
Pics or it didnt happen.
I love The Sound since 1981. Went to see them live in Madrid. Unforgettable concert and meeting them for an interview.
Forever Adrian, forever the Sound❤️
You are very lucky my friend , i'm jealous , forever Sound , forever Adrian
This song is a masterpiece. I've become obsessed with The Sound lately, as I discover more and more of their catalog, which I missed during the years the band was alive and actively making music. The day I discovered New Dark Age, I listened to it five or six times, picking up on different nuances each time. The urgency of Adrian's vocals, as the song picks up speed, is gut-wrenching.
I find it impossible to take my eyes off him during the videos of the band's live performances. But I also find that I can't take my eyes off Colvin "Max" Mayers, who somehow was able to play keyboards and sometimes guitar, and dance, all at the same time. He radiated a zen energy that balanced Adrian's intensity.
I'm so grateful for all the music they and the band left behind. I wish Adrian and Colvin could have had long, happy lives, and that The Sound could have had the lucrative career they deserved.
"And we've broken our fingers, broken our faith, broken our hearts so many times they can't be broken anymore" the power of suffering
I accidentally found this band and I'm happy I did!
"From the safest places, come the bravest words"
26/04/1999 - 26/04/2024.
RIP Adrian. It's so unfair he didn't get the recognition he deserved while he was alive. The world can be really cruel. But he'll always be remembered.
40 years later, the lyrics are still relevant.
What an insanely powerful way to close a monumental album. The strength and seeming panic in Adrian's voice as he screams "Here it comes!" as a new dark age descends upon humanity right at the album's conclusion. Absolutely brilliant!
True!! I've felt the same things since I listened the album for the first time, when I was very young and didn't understand so much about music
Yes--the strength AND the panic in his voice. This song never stops being compelling.
I discovered this band this year 2022 in spotify and only have to say they are amazing. What a moment to be alive
The very definition of postpunk. This record and Chameleons 'Script of the Bridge' and Sad Lovers and Giants and Dawn Fades and Killing Joke and... fuk it just takes me there.
This is the very music that changed my young life in the 80s. Our problems then look like a vacation now. I miss my bihawk.
Snake Corps also 🙏🏻
Still sounds so contemporary. Amazing SOUND.
Most underrated band ever
true.
Best comment ever
Same for The Chameleons
@@bobreshowru They are better
Along The Chameleons
How very appropriate for these times. Best band ever
Possibly my favourite album of the 80's. Lyrically as poignant now as it was back in '81. Powerful stuff.
What an incredible song I have been listening for the last 38 years. Tomorrow is his birthday. ❤️🎧❤️Love from Spain.
A masterclass of a song.

R.I.P. Adrian we never forget.
Yes, very relevant to these times.
Why this band had nearly no success? They were just among the best ones from that time without any doubt! RIP Adrian Borland, you were the best!
indeed, theyre on my top 10 80's Band without no doubt
This is kind of scaring. You can hear the influence of Joy Division and Adrian Borland killed his self after a depression like Ian Curtis.
so true. fantastic band. then as now. loved it since then and still do.
Being a great band actually makes it harder to break through .
some artists take credit after death (best example : Van Gogh)
this doesn't mean they are underrated or not appreciated, it's just that they were ahead of their time
Probably my favourite sings of the best group of '80. It' a shame that only few person remember Borland (wonderful songwriter and musician) and Sound.
Definitely
I think if The Sound had been in Manchester and under The Factory Umbrella they'd have received a lot more recognition ! Right time ...right sound...wrong place!
Great Band !
They would be popular today! Bad ass band!
They were on korova, home of the mighty Bunnymen. The label wasn't the problem
Factory never signed anyone outside Manchester umbrella music circuit
@Roland Roland ....What scenesters and hipsters, sadly that doesn't pay the bills as many a band find out.
@@carloscasillero4422 ....What was the problem ??
Best song ever. Strong word
this is the best new wave rock band in the 80's..no excuses!
I totally agree from the heart.
Ever!!!
I was lucky to see this band in Barcelona in Studio 54, fantastic!!!!
I thought studio 54 was in New york
Art. Treasure. Genius.
maybe my favourite post punk album ever. yes. indeed.
Um Shush right!
i need suggestions. i didnt like some of the new bands
@@atillacnar5785 try she past away
@@boratepe5620 tried. I listened tons of post punk bands and joy divisions sound is unmatched.
Kind of reminds me of something Jim Morrison might've wrote ( he didn't) but wow, what a song! Nice 👍
Adrian Borland loved The Doors.
He was channelling Jim i believe. Stupendous talent. I have From the lion's mouth signed!
I didn't know who this band was until a week ago. I'm glad I found them.
And there is so much more from the 80s to explore.....
So true and the other decades, great times to be able to pour through all this music.
That`s my first Vinyl Album from the sound....great music from my youth.
Oh my god, best album ever!!!!!!!!!!
yep-.
Reint Wiebrands idd wat een prachtige song
and script of the bridge
Best band 80'. Dark so dark
A sound for now more than ever 2021
I thought this was a contemporary band. They are awesome and yes, timeless :)
I heard this on the radio and totally expected these guys to be from the mid-2000s or so. Timeless indeed!
FTLM. One of those albums that happens to be one of the very greatest of all time. Just my .02.
Another beautifull song from the lion's mouth.
That kettledrum sound is haunting.
I didn't know this band. What I ve missed !!They are great.
Amazing
omg - how I loved this album!
Thank you so, so much for making it possible for me to stumble upon their music on a bad night. My god, what a band. I've been down a whole rabbit hole reading about them and listening. How sad that they didn't get their due in their timem and that Adrian Borland suffered so much, but how glad I am that their legacy isn't lost.
In which dark whole I must have been, to stumble upon this just now here...
Arian Borland, rest in peace, and thank you for the music!
I was at their concert in Naples Palapartenope... in those times it was more similar to a circus tent 😁 amazing group. Just music at the center, no special effects. Great bass I was really catched! Their sound is still so contemporary and lyrics are the same. 80s gifted wonderful music and so many great bands/ artists to which I can hear lots of current bands still refers to.
This song kicks ass !
Great song and band. The entire album is a masterpiece and timeless.
Nn mi stancherò mai di ascoltarla
Beautiful song I've loved for the longest time 😊
Underrated band, but one of the best
Indeed sweet memories from the early eighties
When Borland sings like Jim Morrison ;)
yes.
Silent Air is like a lost track of The Doors too.
The newest addition of my faves that I listen to daily
Here it is
I'm really happy discovering treasures!
So good, absolute cult status, and rightly so.
Totally epic..
Grandissimo!
Amazing!!!
Stella is a diver and she's always down! 👍🏼😉 interpol
INCREÍBLE!
seen them live, in Venlo in the 80's ....just great
The best thing I found in live
amazing
I was a nervous student back then. "Winning" was my personal anthem, defying the lion's mouth
Questa è la mia preferita 🖤
Great band. We now enjoying in this music in Croatia
"THE SOUND" is the sound!😮
Aquí en México suenan con madre
Terrific and Adrian Borland was as big a fan of Jim Morrison as Ian McCollough ever was!
You can hear the influence here
Awesome
Any Sound enthusiasts around here?
The piano at 3:25 is brilliant btw.
Hello 👋🏼
That would be Max Mayers.

I saw in Taranto Italia, Fantastic ❤
¡Gracias por tanto Adrian!
Here's the new dark age of humanity. here is the new dark age of information. Here's the new dark age of relationships.

at 4.00 here it comes!
Born in 1970, grew up with the most amazing music evet..music today is mindless shite, useless, dumb and absolutely hurtfull to ones soul and mind..this Sound was intelligent songwriting,thrilling...thank God I had my youth in seventies and Eighties..
2021 We are living in the New Dark Age.
ready for my social credit score, vr helmet strapped on tight and trapped in a 5 foot room.
HERE IT COMES
I should get exploring then.
To live under British austerity must have truly felt like the end of times. No wonder this music got made. The dark age has always been here, it just hurts more during some times than others.
2022
..All we've got to show is the dust on the floor
