Quake Champions - A Message To The Community

  • History repeats, so I wanted to share my perspective on the transition between Quake games and how I'm approaching Quake Champions.
    I know it's going to be different. I know it's not going to be the same. And I know that I won't understand why it's fun until I give it a proper chance. I also know if we don't help the community grow, Quake is doomed to remain a small game, and we may not see new Quake games in over 10 years again.
    It's time for change... I'm going to embrace it and do my best to make Quake Champions the best it can be, and hopefully Quake becomes what it should be -- the top eSport and best game ever made. No matter what happens, the above will always be true for me, but I hope a lot more people can agree some day. That would be awesome.
    Good luck in the beta, hope to see you all soon, old and new players!
    Zy

      quake 3 defrag mod to learn the physics in depth, which will help a shitton at champions, theres an active extremely experienced community at q3df.org with enough servers (high ping doesnt really matter in defrag as its all about speedrunning, unless you go for team speedruns), and people will be more than willing to teach you all the advanced tech and intricates of cpm/vq3 physics, and trust me noone knows more than defraggers bout the game's physics and how to abuse it, everyone there has practically done a thesis on the engine itself lol

      you guys really need to understand that designing a game around such a pivotal mechanic and then simply adding a minigame where you can play a version of the game without the mechanic when the game was never designed to be played without it is a slap to the face of anyone who doesnt want a new direction; the people who have been playing it for two decades. those are the people I would call "true fans." That said, QC will not necessarily fail, but taking whatever decision the industry throws at your favorite games with no resistance at all is absurd.

    I'm so ready for this game. Thanks for making this video. I never picked it up because my one experience was just maddening with the constant toxicity and being kicked out of servers left and right. I'm really hoping this turns out great with all the new comers.

      Xombie Yeah, I feel you. My first 200 hours of Quake Live CA was literally bouncing from server to server learning as fast as I could how to play and getting kicked all the time. it was awful and the community rejected me until I got better. Worst experience in gaming but the payoff of the skill you get is worth it all.

    • @brainnim9935
      @brainnim9935 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marcus Munitions Aside from ffa servers and the House of OSO CA server, my experience has been very similar. Getting destroyed is just a part of the high skill cap and is in my opinion, one of the big appealing aspects of the game.
      However, it is genuinely discouraging to be pushed to the side by players that don't think it is worth spending time on newcomers. They either quit after one round, kick me, or stop playing seriously and pull out the plasma from rail distance. It's one thing if the road to improvement is steep but it is 10x worse when people flat out refuse to help you get better.

      yea not everyone is going to have that perseverance, fantastic video i hope we can all enjoy it new and old. it hink what may make or break this game is whether MM system and the elo ranks are good enough, along with warowl and luckySkillFaker quake equivalent channels coming up to break things down.

      I still have a bunch of scoreboard screenshots saved from my Q3 days and there were plenty of people with 1 or 2 frags at the end of each game. I didn't really learn how to play online shooters until Q3 came out but being cannon fodder was part of the experience. If QLive had a community that was kicking people for not being 1337 that's pretty lame, every deathmatch bloodbath needs warm bodies.

I am obsessed with Quake and for a little while in 2016 I was playing anywhere from 6 to 8 hours a day with high school. No homework, little sleep, just Quake Live CA and Reflex. I stopped talking to my friends and almost to my family. Now I do my homework and plag for 3 hours because otherwise I would go back into my Quake addiction phase and it nearly killed me.

    Old Q3 Player here, spent hours and hours in that game, still play from time to time on steam, love it.
    Quake 4 was a mistake.. tried couple hours and didn't like it.
    Played the Beta of Quake Champions that ended yesterday, oh man.. the feeling, the strafe, the rocket jump, the Q3DM6 map re-created.. railgun, shotgun, machinegun, lightninggun.. its awesome, its like play Q3 on a new graphics engine.
    I was able to notice some newbie players, but also some players with really good skillz, old players i will say.. you could notice them by the way the move, aim, switch weapons and attack.
    I'm sold and i'm gonna be buying it to support the devs.

      Defo mate, I was one of the noobs and some of the people I played with were racking up 7.0 K.Ds, took me a few hours to start being at the top in my games. As someone who hardly touched other quakes this one seems like the perfect start into the franchise.

    • @JaxDagger
      @JaxDagger 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no offense but as much as you are an older player, i'm going to guess you where either not that great at it or simply didn't play quite as much as the vets did, because the new one is horrible compared to the original it is trying to be, the strafe is pretty bad compared to what made quake the legend it was, which in turn makes the rocket jumping not as good as it was, the rest sounded like you liked it mostly based on nostalgia

    • @zyndro
      @zyndro 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      cool however there are some things here..
      1. is not a remake or a copy, so you can't expect everything to be exactly the way it was. For that matter you can just stick with the old one. there are changes yeah and i'm sure they ( the devs ) are trying to make the best of it, its not like they say "hey lets do it worst and see what happens"
      2. There are no other's Quakes out there.. fast pased FPS ? rocket jump ? strafe jumping ? improved maps based on the old ones ? guns and characters from the old one ? there's no other single game out there than you can call a Quake successor.
      3. And i'm sad to say this.. Quake 3 is dead, even on the steam version is hard to find 1vs1 players, all maps empty, fan base are just grown up guys ( like me ) who live from nostalgia days ( as you said ) so.. at the end of the line, whats better ? leave it like that and let it die and get forgotten or try to do a refresh and get some new fellas aboard ?
      so as Rocket Jump Ninja said in the video, Quake Champions its not perfect and has changes, but at this point it's what we got and there's no other company doing something about it. So its up to you my friend, jump in the fun wagon or stay in the old Q3 waiting for someone to play with.
      pura vida !

    • @0xCAFEF00D

  • @NZyoutube
    @NZyoutube 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Despite of playing the game since Quake 2 MP and being able to strafe jump backwards, I get FLAMED on servers for not being 'good enough'. I don't play everyday and lose touch at times!
    I'm GLAD you addressed this issue. Although the it's the best game out there, it just turns regular folks all egoistic once they get really good. You really have to give n00bs a chance.

    Threewave's "Classic CTF" for Quake 3 was actually very good. Mainly because it brought back the grapple. :D DeltaCTF for Quake 4 was shaping up very well too as I recall (although it was a decade ago!)
    I'm really excited about Quake Champions - *but* I'm a CTF/objective player. I find deathmatch boring, and I'm not a great dueller so that's frustrating. For me, QC will stand or fall on whether it offers me what I want.
    But I my God I want it to succeed!

      @LG-Devil 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Threewave had some of the best maps agreed! I was primarily a CTF player. It was like soccer in a way. Defenders, midfield, and attackers with positional rotations similar to rocket league (if people unfamiliar with quake need something to relate it to). I was too slow to be a flag runner but had accuracy as a midfielder. :) Quake 3 CTF was like chess and soccer with guns. Brilliant game!

    Quake is the game that both made me good at video games and also the desire to get better at them. I remember the days of going 0-40 on a regular basis back when I found this franchise back in the height of Quake Live's run. It took me forever, but I learned to appreciate both the esport side of the game and the fun you could have with insta-ctf.
    Now that I'm close to Masters in Overwatch, I appreciate the lessons I learned in Quake. I hope that Quake always is the place to learn those mechanics. That it remains as pure as possible. I believe that Quake's new champions mechanics raising the bar is what quake needs to appeal to people like me, while being accessible to new players and new players of the genre.

    some of my worries have been quite diminished, and im actually quite pleased they gave a character crouch sliding. however, the one thing that I really cant stop wondering about is the effect that spawning with armor and armor pickups giving different armor values will have on the gameplay. it seems as though it would be rather easy for certain characters to become dominant simply because they are rewarded more for map control. the abilities dont worry me so much, but doesnt different health values and armor pickups / spawning with armor completely circumvent map control in the first place? also, i saw an image of character stats that implied characters would be given movement speed caps, with the highest being at 800ups. Why? i hope the extra mobility of the squishier characters gives them an edge that proves me wrong about map control, and that rocket jumping and speed in general end up being fine. regardless, im excited to play the game asap :)

    That's my current problem with gaming community in general is the toxicity. With it's rise and increase in player base gaming for me at least online gaming has become almost unbearable. If it isn't a toxic community then it's the cheats and hackers that quickly flood any popular game. With Quake Champions going F2P and in-game currency means hackers will be in there masses to try rank accounts and sell them on. Let alone players that just want to have great stats and claim to be awesome with their aim-bots set to max which then causes the community to become toxic because it's so hard to tell who's actually a skilled player and who's a aim-bot cheater.
    If only LAN's were still a thing...

    I agree, Quake II was the best online game I ever played. It's hard to believe this year is it's 20th anniversary. It had an awesome community and incredibly fun game play. Rocket Arena on Q2 has so much nostalgia for me...I wish it were still alive somehow so it could be played again. But I'm excited for Quake Champions. I don't like the idea of asymmetrical abilities, but I'm willing to give it a chance for even the slightest glimmer of hope of having as much fun as I had with the earlier Quake games.

    Picked up Quake 3-4 weeks ago. One of the best FPS games I've ever played. It's hard out there for a noob, but when I get a good match, man, it's unlike anything else out there. I think it has a place in 2018, and I hope it takes off, at least to the point where you're not stuck with 90% Quake veterans playing only.

    I totaly agree with you, we have to give it a chance and I was actualy surprised by the beta, there still need to be some abilities to be balanced but for a beta it was better than expected. It will prolly be good to attract new players and shouldn't disturb too much older players as the core is still the same. We'll have our own "pure" mode anyway without abitilies, at least for 1vs1 I'd hope. You're right that if we don't welcome and help new players, we'll shoot ourselves in the foot and I can see why no one other than 25-35 years old guys liked Quake Live as if they haven't played Q3 before, they'd get completely raped big time by all the veterans and then simply ragequit and uninstall the game.
    I was surprise to see a classic weapon such as the Plasma not be part of the game, and I guess the Nailgun has replaced it perhaps because they both behave the same but the plasma makes it too "messy" visualy? I played the beta, at least the last 2 days out of 4 cause no one could connect to the servers. They better not force the FFA to 10 players because it's WAY too much crowded and spammy. Should be 6 players idealy, 8 at the very most, and 8 for TDM but I could still manage to deal with 10 but definitely not more!
    The quad is abusive in it's current state and rail shouldn't deal 100 dmg instead of 80 when zoomed-in. Surprisingly abilities are fun and better that I've thought, it's no Overwatch BS trust me. I haven't bought a game day 1 since UT3 in 2007 which I shouldn't have but this Quake is a a super safe bet. Now my only hope is that this time they won't abandon the community like they did with Q3 and Quake Live, and that they'll listen to Pros, Veterenans and people on their forum or else we're all doomed until the next Quake in 15 years (-_-)

    QC is very fast paced, and very fun, but there definitely has to be changes for high level players to be able to have a fair playing environment. What I'm talking about is being able to select your region, and being able to choose whether or not you want to join matches that have already began. The first day I played, I had a great time without being on 255 ping, the next day I lost every game because of the region and joining games late. However, aside from that, I think that the game is very fun. What I like the most about the game so far IS the champions and what each champion's features are. As I anticipated, the champions were mainly created to give you different past Quake movement physics styles and not so much 'counter abilities'. It allows you to pick Quake 4, Quake 3, Quake 3 CPMA\QW playstyle, and it even adds even newer ideas. The champion abilities adds more depth to the combat, it is so much faster paced now that I am probably going to leave behind Quake Live because of how fun QC actually is. The only thing I am really concerned about is Duel, the champions idea might work with Duel, but Duel will either be played with the current armor\hp system in QC or it might have a classic armor\hp system. If they don't add RA, Mega, YA, GA back into the game (WITH duel appropriate map designs), then I doubt we'll be seeing this gamemode anymore. It is so hard to let go of my fascination and dedication to learning this game, but I guess it has got to end eventually. Please iD Software, bring back classic duel in Quake Champions!

  • @heytoast7129
    @heytoast7129 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    And the things you mentioned about previous quakes, those are differences in gameplay. They didn't really dumb anything down like they're doing wit QC. For a quake "veteran", it's a bit troubling that you don't realize that the heroes, sorry, champions have different speed caps. Even with the fastest champion, going at the max speed, you'll never reach speeds attainable in previous quakes right? So here's how they dumbed it down.
    Speed cap: A huge part of quake has always been about the movement and speed. Going as fast as you possibly can in situations based on how good your technique is and area you're in has just gone out the window. I think the fastest champion revealed so far is around 800 ups at the most. In q3, that can be achieved by a good circle jump and 2-3 strafe jumps. If quake was an animal, you just neutered it with speed caps. And for anyone that doubts, check interviews, check quake.com, they show rough attributes (including top speed) for each champion.
    Item timers: Another big part of gameplay in quake has been about controlling different weapons, armors, power ups so you have as much resources as possible while your enemy has as little as possible. With item timers, there's another aspect of the game right out the window. No longer will we see guys like rapha exploit an opponent's mistake of not remembering when an item spawns. Watching how a player goes from no info at all to little by little collecting what he needs to regain control and turn the tables on an opponent.
    Abilities:
    Teleport/blink: I don't know how many times people have won or lost a fight, position, item, or even match because they either messed up a maneuver or successfully executed one. Now with ranger, there's no need to have to rely on your movement skill at critical moments in order to get an advantage over your opponent. Now, you just mash that button down and away you go, literally. I doubt these maps will be in QC, but as an example, imagine how boring maps like Hektik or Toxicity would be if people could just teleport away after picking up MH or RA. There would be no risk involved, because you wouldn't have to worry about messing up a jump to get out of there, you just blink away to safety. Yes, q3/ql did have a personal teleport that could be picked up. However, there are a couple key differences. One, the teleporter in q3/ql sent you to a "random" location on the map, you didn't have any control over where you went exactly. And two, it was never an item available in any competitive mode.
    Wallhack: Seriously? It's an insanely cheap game mechanic, whether it's part of a program a cheater is using, or it's a feature in a n00bified single player game, it's awful. You have done literally nothing to earn the information you gained by using it. Currently in quake, you can be fairly sure where your opponent is based on his stack, what weapons he has or doesn't, and which items are up. It requires some brainpower to keep track of those things. In QC, there's no need for that. Not sure where the enemy is when you're about to make that jump to grab that weapon or armor? No problem, just activate your trusty wallhack and see if he's in the area. Ah, taking more risk out of the game, so exciting.
    For a "skill based fps", they sure have introduced many things that either take away the need for a particular skill completely, or at least severely diminished its usefulness.

    • @heytoast7129
      @heytoast7129 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      And LMAO @ the latest interview with Willits. Power ups like quad won't be an item picked up by one player on a team. No. Now the whole team will get a boost in damage for the duration of the quad. Ah, it's shaping up more and more to be Quake for snowflakes.

    • @Worm318
      @Worm318 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You, as most Quake players, are thinking with duel mentality and Quake is perfect in that mode. I would dare to say that there's no better FPS for 1v1 than Quake and in fact all the more popular FPS (CS, OW, CoD, etc) are team-based and their 1v1 modes are plainly boring.
      Quake falls behind in team-based category though exactly because there's no difference between two given players and therefore there's less need for cooperation (that is what you want in team-based games). There's no semi-forced especialization and a skilled-enough player can do all needed roles. In Quake usually it's not the players that make the better team that win, but the team with the better players.
      Enters the ability and asimmetry in stats. Every player in a team has advantages and disadvantages so one of them can't do everything. Now a enough skilled player can't just yolo trusting their aiming and skill but has to rely more in teammates for certain tasks. Now there's also the extra decision of picking the right character for the right situation and well-adjusted to your own playstyle (however this last good thing can be killed because of meta mentality due to imbalance).
      Finally you can argue that skills give extra tools for players to play with (and extra risks if you're the enemy). I would be tempted to believe that Scalebearer players will rocket jump off the ceilling to crush more effectively enemies and Nyx player will use items to trick and telefrag players for example.
      Also, as far as I know, there's no visual timer for enemy cooldown, and if champion-skills are that important, predict correctly this cooldown will be quite important as well.
      In conclusion, I think that QC will suck in Duel but I think it will be good in TDM and CTF (not sure about CA and FFA)

      @Worm318 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      About Quad: that's a real shame and it's a weird choice. It would have an extra layer of complexity because certain champions would benefit more of it than others (and there's a risk involved to wait for that champion to grab it)

    you dont make games fun, and neither does the community, games are either fun or they are not and thats ENTIRELY SUBJECTIVE, you could be the best ambassador to the game you can but i still wont care about quake champions or overwatch, because i simply dont like arena games with a trillion different characters and then a bunch of developers changing how they play every patch to "to make it more interesting" by nerfing/overpowering stuff.
    For example, if i play an old school duel and the other guy destroys me, im still having fun as long as i understand wtf is going on, because im actually learning to play better, but if i boot up this crap i dont even know wtf is going on because theres a trillion different toons that do different stuff on modified ugly versions of my beloved maps to boot, and my mind automatically gets transported into that big bang theory scene: the 3 dimensional chess scene, just because you add 2 other boards doesnt make chess better
    you guys have been trying to get "new players" for ages and its not happening, whatever you get it will be gone in the first 9 months, overwatch plays better than this, and overwatch is pretty lame (have it installed, last game was 2 months ago)
    Step one has to be making a good game, not throwing shit up and see if it works or just going "well, lets hope the community can make it work"
    lets face it, this game is worse than its predecessors, and i get that theres people that can vote to the same terrible candidate every election, but Vaas is right, doing the same thing, over and over and over again, expecting shit to change, is CRAZY
    i also dont get why some people are fine with someone trying to sell you something you dont really like much just because they made something in the past that you loved, specially considering these guys probably have nothing to do with whoever made the previous games, so this isnt even loyalty to something you are not sure about, its loyalty to a... to an intellectual property, a brand

    • @Xul
      @Xul 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks ... I'm tired of this "gentlemen's agreement" to not point out what you don't like about the game. Since when is it a virtue to sugar coat flaws and silence criticism with some "you are hurting the game, we have to like and support it no matter what" bullshit ..
      I mean RocketJumpNinja literally says that he refrains from advertising the game because he knows that people that aren't "loyal" to the game will probably see the obvious flaws in concept and execution of the game for what they are ... flaws ... It's basically a play of "emperor's new clothes" ...
      I really tried to like it, played it in beta and i bought it as soon as it went early access ... but every time im in that game i get so tired of netcode iissues, the clunky game und non-responsive play style and the bad champ balancing ... that ill quite after only 1-2 matches ... going back to Dirty Bomb which is faster, more fluent and a lot more balanced (though it has annyoing issues as well but nothing even close to those of quake champions)
      No, I won't sugar coat this ... it's just a bad game and as long as there aren't fundamental changes it will continue to be bad - especially with that "hush, dont be critrical" attitute ....
      Yes, you can get used to it ... but obviously the game lacks the direct, raw and fair feel of Q3/QL ...
      Just one example: In one of my first matches after buying the game I came on a server with Toxjq playing there ... I turned out that even his play seems boring and random in QC ...
      while he was dominating as he should it never felt like the rape you'd expect when you would meet him in QL ... the game just never feels direct and transparent ...

    • @iLiokardo
      @iLiokardo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "you dont make games fun, and neither does the community"
      If the game is well developed, you yourself make it fun.
      "games are either fun or they are not and thats ENTIRELY SUBJECTIVE"
      I believe you, but it does slightly depend on your actions, like if you actually bother to learn the game.
      "you could be the best ambassador to the game you can but i still wont care about quake champions or overwatch, because i simply dont like arena games with a trillion different characters"
      There are 12 characters, each of them with different abilities and stats. You learn how to use and fight each of the
      characters and choose whatever character you like playing with the most.
      "a bunch of developers changing how they play every patch to "to make it more interesting" by nerfing/overpowering stuff."
      Perhaps they do try to make it interesting so it doesn't get stale, but they also try to balance the game.
      "*the whole 2nd paragraph*"
      Whether you understand what is happening depends on if you have learned the game. Modified ugly versions of
      your beloved maps? Did you even try to learn them? Perhaps they were confusing compared to the original
      versions, but don't be lazy and make excuses.
      "you guys have been trying to get "new players" for ages and its not happening, whatever you get it will be gone in
      the first 9 months, overwatch plays better than this, and overwatch is pretty lame"
      New players haven't gotten into Quake because of the toxic nature of the community, the difficulty of the game is
      up to the player to get over. Overwatch has completely different movement and shooting mechanics.
      "Step one has to be making a good game, not throwing shit up and see if it works or just going "well, lets hope the community can make it work""
      Whether a game is good or bad, that is a bit of a subjective question. I guess they are trying to bring in abilities
      and trying to make it work, but are they throwing shit up?
      "lets face it, this game is worse than its predecessors"
      Just because of the abilities and multiple characters to choose from? Perhaps you're saying that it's "not Quake
      anymore".
      "i get that theres people that can vote to the same terrible candidate every election, but Vaas is right, doing the same thing, over and over and over again, expecting shit to change, is CRAZY"
      They vote for the same candidate, hoping they'll change. Doing the same thing again and again, hoping for
      change, what do you "get" about that? What do you want from Quake? Maybe, just better graphics, better
      optimisation, but the same game.
      "*last paragraph*"
      Maybe you're right, but Zy (Rocket Jump Ninja) does seems to like the new game.
      Besides, it's still Quake, but with multiple different characters, each of them with a different ability.
      Tried to make it readable, now don't be lazy and make excuses.

    great video, well communicated. most gaming communities need cooler heads when discussing new sequels or features. I can't wait to play this and relive my Q3 days!

    Like the ambassador idea. Hope this game will be very popular although sometimes im afraid it will not be adapted by a lot of people. It is easy to learn but takes a lifetime to master and ppl want instant rewards, if you are a newbie it can be really tough i imagine.

    I never got into Quake but I knew it existed, and even if I never played any of them I was still exited when I saw the TH-cam ad for Quake Champions.

    I just started playing quake Champions this year and while I am far from being good at the game I do find myself enjoying it a lot more than any other fps out now. The game has a lot of room to grow but its fun

    Subscribed after this video. I have not played any Quake multiplayer since Q3A, which I played from 1999 to maybe 2001 or 02. Really looking forward to Quake Champions.

    Quake Champions is the first Quake I have ever played in my life mainly, because I was too young for the first ones. Seeing this video just made me want to play the game even more when it finally releases. Thank you for that. :)

    Thank you. Thank you so much for this.
    I've played for 20 years now and still never got to the point of being particularly good, but I still enjoy the heck out of Q1/QW/Q3A (sorry, never had a feeling for Q2). It's hard to stay interested when you run into these abusive, toxic jerks that are unwelcoming to either the new or "bad" players. It makes me sad because it's my first gaming love and I feel unwelcome in my own community.

    I tried getting into Quake live, but I feel like people try everything to get you kicked if you are not good enough. One match me and my friend got laughed at because of our elo. I really hope I get a new chance with Quake Champion. Great video and really mature opinions, thank you so much.

    This was a great video. I completely agree with you. It's been a long time since we've had a new Quake game. I'm definitely buying this game just to support the work that's being put into it.
