  • One of the darkest chapters of Prohibition was the government's use of toxic additives in industrial alcohol to deter drinkers. On Christmas Day 1926, 66 people died as a result.

They do the same thing to rubbing alcohol. Poison it so that people won't get a cheap drink.

Isopropyl alcohol is intrinsically poisonous. I believe you are referring to methylated spirits or denatured alcohol.

I wish it could be determined precisely where these bottle & barrel smashing events occurred, as seen in the film footage here or in photos seen in books on the era. It just would be interesting for history buffs like me to be able to associate specific, known places where Prohibition-events occurred, for it seems Prohibition left few if any detectable traces, at least that are above ground & easily accessible today. It also would be extremely interesting to see how such sites have changed during the intervening decades, i.e., street corners, lots, parks, railroad yards, warehouse truck terminals, neighborhoods, etc. This used to be a period of U.S. history I didn't understand & to which I gave little attention. In the last several years, however, I've become very interested indeed in those fascinating times. As a result, I'd find it alot of fun to follow a "Prohibition Trail", though I know of no source that could help me out. By the way, last I heard, the Prohibition Party still exists & puts-up candidates for all levels of political offices, including presidential.
