  • How to make a motorcycle jack / lift / stand in 20-30 min at home and spend only $20?
    Since I posted my last video ( • Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Up... ) about all upgrades and modifications I made on my Vulcan 900 Classic, I received a lot of questions about my home-made (DIY) motorcycle jack. I decide to make a short video about how I made this "$20 Motorcycle Jack" and how I handle it. This jack is a perfect fit for my Kawasaki Vulcan 900, and I assume it might work as well for many other bikes. You can purchase all required materials and parts at your local hardware store for about US $20, and it would take 20-30 minutes to make the "$20 Jack".
    The bike in the video:
    2015 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic SE
    Recommendations in this video are applicable to the following motorcycles:
    2006-2022 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom
    2006-2022 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic
    2006-2022 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic LT
    Everything you need to buy for the "20 Dollar Motorcycle Jack":
    2x8x8 (38 mm x 190 mm x 2400 mm) Dimension Lumber CAN $9.50
    Fitting Galvanized Iron Floor Flange 1 Inch CAN $4.50
    Galvanized Steel Pipe Nipple 1 Inch x 48 Inch CAN $12.00
    (it should have thread at the end to screw into the floor flange)
    8 X 2 1/2 Deck Screws 15 pcs
    Optional: 40mil Gray PVC Shower Liner Leftovers from the shower project

    Great idea. I've been riding bikes for 50+ years and never thought of this idea. I wish I would have seen this years ago, before I bought a lift. I will recommend to my sons.

    Thanks for this idea.
    Just made one out of scraps.
    An old fence post i had sawn in half and flush bolted together . topped it with a piece of 1inch ply covered the lot in some heavy duty rubber mat I had in the garage and for the pipe used a rotary wash line pole i was going to take to our local recycling dump.
    Total cost? Zero.
    Works great so once again thanks for the design idea.
    Stay safe happy riding

    Greta Idea for the jack I use a Harbor freight lift but its necessary to place 1 x 2's under the frame and have to do that while the jack is under the bike ,, very unstable until everything is set, also the lift is in the way doing the oil change, yours is so much simpler and leaves plenty of room to work underneath, great idea

    Even if there are obstructions between the two frames sections you could cut the wood to fit around them. A small recess for the frame on each side may even make it more stable. The entire thing seems a bit too wide. It could probably be 1/2 the width.

      I thought about making it shorter, but my bike with highway bars and saddle bags is 3.5 feet wide. Thus, 2 ft. for my bike would not really work. The jack's handle bar should go all the way from back to front without hitting the bike from any side. I guess, it depends on the bike and what it has installed on it.

    Max, great idea. Is it possible to get the front wheel off the ground with the 8" board? I'm thinking of using a 2x10"x8". Do you think that'd be too high for stability once it's up? Thanks.

    • @KMaxVideo
      @KMaxVideo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi,
      I can get the front wheel off the ground with my jack. I just move it forward a bit, so the centre of gravity of the bike is behind it. You can see how I do it in this video: th-cam.com/video/-L1v4vNe7Ug/w-d-xo.html
      You really want to have only one wheel off the ground for stability. It would be also much harder to put the bike on a higher jack due to the different lever ratio. You can try and see how it would work, but I think it would be less safe and more difficult to operate.

    Hey I was completely blown away by your homemade bike stand. I have a 2006 Vulcan 900 Classic. One question. When the stand is in place under the bike is the rear tire “off of the ground”? In other words with the transmission in “neutral” will the rear tire (and wheel) turn freely? Or, is the rear tire still on the ground?

    • @KMaxVideo
      @KMaxVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, aactually you can have either front or rear tire off the ground. It depends where the stand is. If it is slightly back 1-2 inches, then the rear tire will be in the air. I show it in the video at 1:40.

      Thanks Max. I looked at your vid again...after subscribing...and I noticed the rear tire was off the ground. Your homemade jack is not only great for changing the oil but it would also make “cleaning the tires (and wheels)” so much easier being able to turn the wheels freely with the bike standing in one location. Lol, I was having to push my bike forward and backward to clean the the tires/wheels. Going to make a jack for my bike this weekend. You should get a “patent” on your stand, LOL. I am curious about one thing. To raise the rear tire off the ground is your jack directly or just behind the kick-stand? It looks that way in the vid.

    • @KMaxVideo
      @KMaxVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's made from dimensional lumber sold as 2" x 8" x 8'. (2 inches by 8 inches by 8 feet long.) Cut the 8' in half to give u 2 each, 4' pieces. Screw the 2 pieces together (with 2" to 2 1/2") screws. 1" pipe 4' long. A 1" floor flange (1 " is the diamerter of the threaded hole in the middle, not the diamerter of the flange) the pipe will screw into. Although 1/2" inch pipe and floor flange worked better for me since it weighs less

    Hello again Max. I have another Vulcan 900 question for you. I do not have an owners manual so I need some expert help. I’m running Dunlop D404 tires (factory spec). I was wondering what tire pressure you run in your tires.

    • @KMaxVideo
      @KMaxVideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi,
      I usually have 28-30 psi on the front tire and 32 psi on the rear as I ride two up often. If you ride alone and your weight is up to 215 lb it is recommended to have 28 psi on both tires. I can have a little bit more if you want, not too much. Those are recommended end measured when cold.

      Hi George,
      You can try, but it would be more difficult to lift it up and the bike will be less stable. The idea is to have only one wheel in the air, either front or back, and it works fine with the size I use (2x8).

    • @KMaxVideo
      @KMaxVideo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      charha01 Hi, I have not done it yet, but I don't see why not. You can fully unload one of the wheels by moving the jack either back or forward. If you move it slightly forward, the front wheel does not touch the floor at all and there is room to remove it.

      @@KMaxVideo Yes, I mean instead of having the 2-8x8 boards screwed together, adding a 3rd same size board, to make it 3 boards thick. Do you think that would work? or Do you think it is better to have the 2-8x8 boards thick? I just got a 2007 Vulcan 900 and want to do the same type of maintenance that you are doing. I am looking forward to watching all of your videos. 😁

    • @KMaxVideo
      @KMaxVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi. Definitely it is an option. As any other option it has its Pros and Cons.
      Pros (I've got one 😊):
      - it will be more stable
      Cons (from my perspective):
      - it will be more difficult to put it up on the jack because the diagonal of the constraction will be 2/3 of an inch more for the 3 boards than for the 2. When you put it up on the jack, you turn the jack for 90 degrees, and you'll need to go through this longer diagonal raising the entire bike further up when you are at 45 gegrees point.
      - you'll have a little bit les flexibility how far you can move it forward or back to unload rear or front wheel.
      I'd say try it, and if it works better for you, go for it. 😉
      Ride safe!

    • @cadillac1smith485
      @cadillac1smith485 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KMaxVideo Thanks for you input, for now I think I will stick to your original plan. The weight of the bike is of big concern. I do not want it to be more difficult to put up on the jack. And as you have indicated in the responses, the jack can be moved some around forwards or back as needed for different type of maintenance repairs. 👍 🙂!!!

    • @KMaxVideo
      @KMaxVideo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      billski922 Frankly speaking I never tried. In theory you should be able to do it if you drill the hole big enough, so you can turn it in, and small enough, so it doesn't bend inside. It needs to be drilled at 90 degrees to the wood as well. In my case I drilled it very tight. I also found that the thread in the flang is not perfectly at 90 degrees. Would you like to take it out for easier storage?

    • @billski922
      @billski922 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes I was planning to take the pipe out for storage. I think the threaded hole in the flange is not perpendicular to the base. I did open the hole in the wood but that was no help. I'm going to try not attaching the flange to the wood, just slid in the pipe from the back side of the wood.

    • @KMaxVideo
      @KMaxVideo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      billski922 I'd say the flang holds it tight and makes it very sturdy and safe. Just be careful if you don't use the flange.

    cool but it doesn't have to be that long. 40% of that length would be fine

      cheezyridr I found that 4 feet is a good size, maybe 3 feet, but not shorter. It is very stable in this case. My bike with highway bars, saddle bags is 3.5 feet wide. Thus, shorter for my bike would not work. You really want the handle to go all the way from back to front without hitting the bike. I guess, it depends on the bike and what it has installed on it.

    Inch, feet, mix it up, ... 2 by 8 by 8 ... so 8 inch and 8 feet. What am i happy with the metric system
