What works even better is brake clean. It melts the nasty oxidized layer off and makes it clear as new. I accidentally found this out when I dropped a can at work and it hit on the nozzle and shot brake clean in the headlight lens of the vehicle I was working on. It looked horrible so I wiped both headlights with the brake clean to make them even. The customer loved having her headlights done “free” and tipped me, lolz.

The downside to this is that it'll only last a few months, depending on the heat and humidity. And then you can never get it clear again, bo matter what you do. Further sprays of lacquer will just make it worse and permanently foggy at best. This lacquer trick has been known for years by people who have done it to sell cars quicker by spraying the headlights to make them appear new again....or at least temporarily 😂
Why is that? How come it’s only temporary? Also, how would you clean them properly?
@@JohnWick03 It's just the elements. Ultimately, all you're really doing is filling in all the little marrs and cracks with gloss, which is why it appears to be smooth and clean again. But since the chemical makeup of a headlight lens and gloss enamel are comprised of different molecules, they'll never actually bond into one covalent piece. So as humidity, heat, and the wind starts to have its effect on the gloss, it will start to detach itself from those little burrs and cracks. And I didn't even mention UV light, which turns all finishes yellow over time. The only real way to clean your lens is to hit it from the inside as well as the outside and never use fillers.

If your lacquer is not UV resistant, it'll go yellow and oxidize in a very short time. Plus lacquer always shrinks.
Use UV resistant urethane instead as a top coat. And if you abrade (sand) away the oxidized layer from the solar cell first, it will allow in more sunlight and increase efficiency over the old, crusted up cell.

Well, you may as well go buy them new lights. You have just permanently ruined their current ones. While this may look like it clears them, it actually traps the lime buildup that was causing them to be hazy under a film of lacquer. They will be clear for a few weeks, and then permanently become hazy and unrepairable. Crazy what people will do for a few clicks on the internet. The spray treatment will peal.
Its plastic oxidization that causes the film to develop. Alcohol will remove the lose oxidized plastic and make it look ok but will actually contribute to making it oxidize faster.
Cleaning it well to remove lose debris, sanding to expose a non oxidized layer, and then clear coating for protection is the actual fix.
Without a clear coat the problem isnt solved its just postponed.

Spraying with lacquer ❓❓
How long does it last?
@@Cali_Oasis_GardenI did this last year and it lasted for the season
I’m literally digging thru the basement storage closet cuz I know I put some in there a few months ago!!!😂
The cause of the problem is plastic oxidizing from exposure to temp cycles and constant UV.
Whatever coating, if any, the manufacturer uses has worn out.
As the surface gets literally beat up by uv and the environment, on a very small scale it begins to break apart leaving very small pieces of itself on the surface. This frequently feels like a powder. It obstructs the light transmission and causes it to start to look opaque.
On a microscopic level, the surface has went from being very smooth to rough.
In order to actually repair the problem you have to make the surface smooth again. Putting a clear coat on top will do this to a certain degree as it will fill in all the micro cracks and crevices.
However the true repair would be to sand/polish/buff to repair the surface back to smooth.
However it will just oxidize again and repeat, so then you put a clear protection coat on top to make your work last longer.
So the correct answer is either sanding or spraying is only half the solution.
Spray without surface prep wont last, and surface prep without spray wont last.
Just like painting nails 💅. If you don't sand them first, the polish doesn't stick very long.
In other words do both.
