It was discontinued after the 1996 model year for the final time in Brazil , although Brazil would make the T2 vw bus through 2014 and Mexico would keep a more refined version of the type 1 Beetle through the end of July 2003

Were the bugs built in Brazil designed to run on gasoline? I thought I saw someplace that there was an engine modification so they would run on a combination of gas and something else, maybe alcohol?
Probably ethanol. Brazil was big on ethanol years ago, And I seem to remember reading that gasoline in Brazil contained 10 ethanol, to reduce the outgoing money overseas for the imported oil/gasoline.
