    Excellent tune. Totally underrated. "Tell Us The Truth" is a marvellous album.

    First time I heard this was on John Peel session in I think 1978 bought the album as soon as it came out and still got it.

    Before this band allowed themselves to be parodied as a middle class version of 'working class', this band were easily the best of the Roxy Club support bands (at 16 I was there, usually at the front), often outshining the main headliners, their sets raw, energetic, with much care for the kids on the floor.

    I think it was a brave attempt at making a comment on the troubles there. not many people did that especially back then.

      Also the Spitfire Boys song British Refugee. 1977 I think. Excellent, haunting song. They were Liverpool's first punk band and I believe Budgie from Siouxsie & the Banshees was their drummer. Armagh by Au Pairs also comes to mind. Crass also addressed the conflict in a lot of their songs. But Ulster is fucking great, one of Sham 69's best. And it was produced by John Cale of the Velvet Underground!

    There are many innocent irish people that got caught in the crossfire that wanted nothing to do with the liberation or control of N. Ireland... Stiff Little Fingers repeatedly rejected both sides of the war and weren''t afraid to sing about it. This song is a stark contrast to SLF either that or this song is intentionally tongue-in-cheek...

    • @feathersmcgraw4090
      @feathersmcgraw4090 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I mean the lyrics says 'everyone loses' so sounds like they were in line with SLF on this.

    I think this song was made so British soldiers and loyalist paramilitaries could listen to it while on duty and in average everyday life. I have no idea if it was used as that but if so cool. Also, no true statement comes out of this song, the only real thing that comes out of it is disrespect towards the many British soldiers and loyalist paramilitaries fighting the IRA, who are all “losers” as he says. But he gave us a bloody good song so, no one should be mad nor should I!

    Fascism was the political system in Italy during Mussolini. The Third Reich was national socialist. That's a different ideology. They're both crap but nazism is worse than fascism since it's basically racist.
    Sham 69 was NEVER a fascist, nazi or racist band.
