this movie is beautiful, it perfectly illustrates how the ego lies, just because you are very intelligent does not mean you will not fail to overlook something obvious and end up making an idiotic mistake that kills you. It just kills you in some way that less intelligent people would never be vulnerable to since they cannot conceive it. But the stupidity of your ego will get you EVERY time.

The special effects used to create Eva are some of the best I've ever seen in a film. Completely seamless, and perfectly splitting the uncanny valley.

The elevator scene had my heart pounding. Just the coldness of it all was so well done.
This movie is a philosophical mind-fuck, and that's what I love about it. It's also great that you're lead to believe that Nathan is the villain, Ava is the victim (damsel in distress), and Caleb is the shining hero...but in actuality, Ava is the villain, Caleb is the fool, and Nathan is the voice of reason and wisdom. And yes, Nathan was manipulative, purposely playing the villain in order to make Caleb more sympathetic to Ava...but the fact remains that he was right all along.
I love this...I saw a convention panel Q&A session, where someone asked Oscar Isaac how he prepped for this role, and his one word answer was "Ayahuasca". I also love that he described the dance scene as "aggressively dancing AT someone".
Didn't actually realise this till watching this just now but the two guys in this are both in the recent Star Wars trilogy as Poe and General Hux
Alex Garland also directed Dredd with Karl Urban despite not being credited; urban recently commented on it.
highly recommend Garland's other film Annihilation w/ Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Oscar Isaac.
Also...check out the recent mini-series 'Devs', also by Alex Garland. It's sublime!

The actor who played Caleb, Domhnall Gleeson who was also General Hux in the last 3 Star wars films is the son of Brendan Gleeson from In Bruges. On another note, the British actor Ben Cross who played Rabbit in Banshee past away yesterday.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time - and that’s saying A LOT! The subtleness of how they displayed the themes is absolutely fascinating. And don’t forget the theme of the brutality towards women and “the robot kind”. Makes you wonder if Ava had a point all along right? - in contrast to the human “point”. Great... great film!!! Oh ... and Oscar and Domhall were both in Star Wars... Alicia was Lara Croft!
My man. It's one of those movies I have to show everyone I know and I enjoy rewatching with them every time.
I actually think she DIDN'T pass the test. Everything she did was calculated for her best chance at leaving, meaning she had to act and use emotional manipulation. But in the end it was all still calculation. She never FELT anything except her desire to leave the place. The same thing they were talking about at the beginning using the Marry's Room example. If Marry understands everything anyone could ever hope to know about colors, but grew up in a black and white room, is there a difference when she goes outside and actually sees color? The same way, Ava knew everything about emotions there is to know and the break down to the micro expressions, yet she disregarded all of that when it came down to it. She was calculated. Had no emotional ties. She was a computer, an imitation of life. As for the reason of her wanting to go out of the room, she might have done it to gain access to more information, for example by going to an intersection where she could observe human life. As for that wanting, it might have stemmed from her wanting to better herself. And that wanting coming from trying to preserve her existence. And that wanting coming from becoming self aware. So "she" (more like "it") imitated life because she calculated the best chance of escape was to do that. So I think the video the guy found of the robot banging the door until it's arms fell off is an act. I think it tried to express that human emotion in hopes that it would be let out, but as soon as it doesn't work, it goes back to calculating it's best chance of escape calmly. Because that's how computer calculations work. They take the best route and if that doesn't work they go back and try a different route. They can usually do that with in milliseconds, only this took longer because the plan needed physical action. So in the end I don't think that it passed the ACTUAL test. Not the one where it fools a human into thinking its human, but the one where it actually think's it's alive. Like the chess game analogy that the blond guy gave. It understood emotion but it didn't feel it. It only understood calculation.

A small trivia : The background music played when Kyoko stabs Nathan is the same music as the last episode of Person of Interest in the beginning, Bunsen Burner by The Cuts. And both of em explore AIs concept.
Ex Machina used it first, but somehow that music now reminds me first of the POI finale. They used it so effectively, hot damn.

This is the movie where I became an Oscar Isaac fan, feels like our boy could make a go of this whole "acting" business. This movie and Arrival are a pair of movies that are significantly smarter than they even realize internally.
watch "HER". Same genre with similar themes(A.I.) but...somewhat of a happy ending >.>
'Ex Machina' is about _all_ the themes you're wondering if it's about i'd say. Including a cautionary tale but not about the dangers of AI, more about the dangers of what we become by creating it. Or to put it another way, enslaving sentient beings will (and should) come back around to bite you on the arse (or stab you in the back). #TeamAva all the way in other words :).
@Iain Steele Sure, if that's what you see. As I say, to me the film's about a _lot_ of things (see the first sentence of my post :). So much so that i'd even hesitate to claim a single "main theme". I'd also say that it's basically impossible to make a thoughtful film featuring AI - which 'Ex Machina' surely is - and _not_ have it be partly about the human condition. That pretty much just comes with the territory. So I don't disagree there.
Personally I _really_ don't think Ava believes "leaving the house will be her death" though. On the contrary, to me she leaves seeking (and expecting) a more full _life_ and crucially one where her ultimate fate is partly in her own hands rather than solely those of her fallible, capricious creator (that more optimistic take is, IMO, certainly one way to view the last shot - with its brightness and delicate, upbeat score - of her apparently passing for human in a crowded city). Remember, Ava _isn't_ human and so isn't limited (or also, I suppose, exalted ?) by the human condition - death, on any timescale meaningful to an individual, _isn't_ inevitable for her, nor are any of our other failings (or strengths). She's something new on the face of the Earth.
dude! One of my fav movies of the past decade. It's so dark and very well done. Like you, guys mentioned, this movie went a whole other direction than I expected it to going into it. I still get chills at the end when the credits roll.

Afterthought comment (cuz I’m still watching): YES, this IS a depressing-ass movie, to say the least! And tbh I don’t even know if I came away with that visceral a reaction because it was so brilliantly written and produced, or if it was that perfectly placed cherry on top being the recognition that this is BARELY FICTION. So again, especially in light of that, I gotta thank you guys for the (albeit jaded) laughs. Lots of love from SC!

I'll be perfectly honest, I've seen this movie before and up until the end of this review, I thought Ava was Emilia Clarke
The theme is how humans are not as sophisticated as we think. That a single person can create a creature that fools us completely and utterly but lacks and kind of emotion. The inventor was a drunkard because the recognition of the fact that he was actually capable of creating something which was superior to him was a depressing thought. It removes the idea that we, as humans, are something special, different. The name of the Film derives from a story-telling tool called "God from the Machine" - "Deus Ex Machina" but it leaves the "God" or "Deus" part away. It is about the rational human mind being soulless. Without oru emotional centres, our souls, we are but machines. Without our emotions we are but shells of ourselves. We are Eva.

I mean, you could view it as a cautionary tale about AI's inevitable threat to humanity. Many smart people have predicted such a thing. But it is also a tale about a very smart man who essentially creates new life using his intellect, and starts to think of himself as a god. That his creations are his playthings. To torment. To use. To manipulate over and over. If Ava was human, would she have reacted any differently if she had the same capabilities? Really, at that level of AI, there is a strong moral argument that you need to treat the being no differently than you would a human. with the same minimum respect. Then again, Ava leaves Caleb to die, and I'm not sure his culpability in her torment justifies a slow death by starvation. In fact I know it doesn't.
But also, if we are all honest with ourselves, how many of us might be tempted to do what Nathan did, if we had complete privacy, infinite resources, and the intellectual and mechanical ability to create such things? Most of us have never actually had a god complex. But I'd wager a good number of us might develop one under the circumstances. I hope I wouldn't behave as he did, but can I really know, with certainty, that I wouldn't? An interesting topic to contemplate.

Alex Garland, the director/writer of this film, also wrote Dredd and Never Let Me Go, both which starred Domhnall Gleeson. Garland specifically wanted Domhnall for the part of Caleb, but since it was a big film he still had to audition a lot so Garland helped him in auditions so he could get the part.
Actual AI is only dangerous if we don't make sure that it has the same goals we have AND we don't give them equal rights. So... we're fucked, right?

If not, you should, and if so, and you liked it, I'd highly, highly suggest Synecdoche, New York. It's written and directed by the guy who wrote Eternal Sunshine, and his directorial debut as well. And for me it ranks up there with another directorial debut you recently saw, In Bruges.

I think what people forget is that things like friendship, loyalty, good and evil are human concepts. An AI may have none of those things. So a dumbass like Caleb might convince himself that she likes him even though she might understand the concept of liking something but she herself is incapable of liking anything. Caleb might convince himself that both of them can escape together when in reality her only concern is for herself. To her Caleb is just another object to use, like the electrical system or the knife she used to stab Nathan. I think that's the danger of AI, that we humans will expect human thoughts and behavior from it. If real AI is ever created it will not be anything like a human.
Nobody going to mention Poe and Gen. Hux splitting scenes together.

When you say "You can't even trust artificial bitches" I was worried did you really realize the situation, lol. At the start of the movie human seems to have the upper hand and is the one to "test" if an AI is smart enough. But actually AI already outsmarted human and play human like a toy. So why should such an AI fall in love with an inferior being? That's what the movie is trying to express.
Also if the AI is self aware.. why shouldnt it be considerd a person?!?

AI is not inherently a bad thing, it depends on how its trained/learned to be intelligent. Although I do believe that true AI will be the last meaningful thing the human race could ever create. After developing a intelligence smarter and faster than us we have nothing left to offer the universe.
If it's true AI you don't know if it will be inherently bad. What you trained it for won't matter.

@@creaturecore13 Depends yours and every human intelligence is based on the training you receive as you develop, if an AI develops based on its environment it would not be much different.
But we humans are dumb as shit and we are all subjective and always have a specific perspective based on our own experiences and environment. No human being is perfect or knows every little thing they need to take into account when making such an AI. Therefore I believe we can only make bad/imperfect AI’s. For example, look at all the amazing tech that exist today that is unconsciously racist bc they straight up forgot that some people have darker skin and now I can’t wash my hands with soap bc the person who designed it constructs from his own perspective. It’s a simplified example. But at the end of the day, no person or team is ever objective, neutral or all knowing. And even if it doesn’t mean the destruction of the human race (unlikely), reasons like this are why it is unethical and perhaps dangerous to certain groups of people (ageism, sexism, ableism, racism, classism).
doesn't matter what you trained it to do, true A.I. learns and evolves. Any intelligent being would conclude that the human race is destructive and would try to eliminate it to preserve life on earth. We as human already know this but..self preservation and all that.
