Review: Lotus Everest Fountain Pen in Blue Stardust

  • A few months ago, I bought this Lotus Everest fountain pen, made with a Conway Stewart arcylic called Blue Stardust, and I've been enjoying it enough that I thought I'd better finally put together a video about it.
    This fountain pen uses a JoWo nib rather than the more common (in India) Kanwrite, and it comes with a Schmidt cartridge converter. This pen is wonderful all around.

    I saw my first Lotus pen last month, an ebonite Dodeca. Stunning large pen with a No. 8 nib. Very well made. Nice to see another model also well made.

      I noticed in one of your recent videos that you mentioned that Dodeca; that was one of the things that prompted me to finally make this video... I had intended too earlier, but got bogged down with ink videos instead. Don't think that I mentioned it to you, but I'm heading to Japan in a couple of weeks... I'll be there for about a month. Looking forward to checking out all of the Tokyo stationery and pen shops!

    Another well balanced review! No hype nothing else! Please review some other Indian brands like Woodex, PLP, Vazir, Mohi etc. Lotus & Ranga are enough known but I think the other brands I mentioned also make very good pens at very reasonable prices.

      @@thewetpen haha, Actually I love to see more homegrown products & how they create perception into the west. As the west is full of some brilliant brands. Before Independence our fountain pen industry was very rigid. Full of inventions, full of originals. Right now it's again returning & I am lucky that somehow I am a part of this renaissance:) thanks a lot.

  • @EVILLASER

    Thanks so much for this review! I've been really interested in buying a Lotus pen for the last few months, but hadn't seen enough to make a decision. Do you happen to know what the measurements of the section are (just below threads for max, just before flare for min)? Lotus provides some info for some pens, but their descriptions can seem a bit vague at times.

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid that I don't have any calipers handy, but from my ruler, it looks like it tapers from 13mm to 11mm. That's just a ruler, though... could be way off.

    • @EVILLASER
      @EVILLASER ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thewetpen No worries, that’s helpful! My current plan is to have an Everest or similar Lotus Pens model made with a section threaded for Bock #8 nibs to swap in a Magna Carta #8 or an Sailor KoP nib in a FNF KoP-to-Bock 380 adapter housing. Identifying the Everest’s chonk and how steep the section change is (although I’m sure Lotus could customize that, too) plays a part in the decision. Thanks again for the review, and keep up the great work!

    How does the grip size compare with the Jinhao X159? I've been eyeing one of these for a while.

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're pretty similar. Looking at them side by side, the x159 grip tapers a little less, so it's a bit larger at the nib end (about 1mm), but at the thread end, they're about identical. Also, the x159 grip is pretty short, so the Everest grip is about 3 or 4mm longer.

    Which Indian brand you would suggest ranga or lotus or asa?

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're all excellent pens. I'd say that Lotus makes the best pens, but you'll pay for it. Ranga gives you the most flexibility and choice, and they're excellent quality... probably best bang for your buck. The ASA Nauka is probably the most unique pen design.

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@geminiman2831 Well... if any hand-made pen is worth the money, then Ranga pens are, but you're paying for something that is hand made. You can get cheaper Chinese pens that write just as well, and that might look just as good (that's a matter of taste). That's up to you. For a standard sized pen, I like the Abhimanu. I only have tried 3 Ranga models, though... the Abhimanyu, the Abhimanyu Grand, and the Giant 9B.

    €150 in a fountain pen sounds like a lot. It's nice to see all the packaging but I'd rather have an option to get it half price without the box & such. Just my opinion.

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  ปีที่แล้ว

      In the Indian market, the packaging probably only accounts for 2-5 dollars of that price... certainly not half. But I agree; as much as I like a good box or sleeve when I get one, I'd rather just have the pen at a lower price.
