    I came across a deal on a nice handheld refractometer a while back and bought it to use in brewing, but I'm finding it super helpful in verifying purity of solvents extracted/distilled from consumer products. Basically I'm finding out that vigreux columns are pretty limited.

      That's interesting. I thought they work as good as it is told in the labs. I also tested a small sample of selfmade chloroform and found out that it was quite far from pure, even after distillation.

    An Abbe refractometer is an instrument to determine the index of refraction of a liquid between two high-index glass prisms.

    If Alpha T is critical angle of sample liquid then how total internal reflection can occur because there is denser reflecting prism in front of rarer liquid sample

    thanks. Do you know that by density and refractive index you can investigate the structure of a compound ?

    • @RaExpIn
      @RaExpIn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have only read that you can guess some of the funtional groups due to a high or low refractive index. Or are there other methods?

      Random Experiments International there are ! Search for Eisenlohr equation, molar refractivity, parachor on Google

    • @zodd0001
      @zodd0001 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry I made a mistake. Search on google Lorentz - Lorentz equation of molecular refractivity, table of atomic refractivity of Eisenlohr. Not parachor.

    What is the manufacturer of that refractometer?

    • @RaExpIn
      @RaExpIn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a polish manufacturer called PZO. This model is RL2, but they don't have any information about it on their page. The oldest manual they have is about the RL3, which seems to be quite similar, but they're selling the RL4 today.

    YOU SHOULD HAVE USED PLASTIC DROPPER TO PROTECT PRISMS FROM SCRATCHING
    WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO GET "X" IN BETWEEN LIGHT AND DARK ?
    HOW DO YOU GET RI OF GEMS ?

    • @An_Onion
      @An_Onion 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The prisms are generally made of fused silica or quartz, and both of those are harder than glass, so it's unlikely that you will scratch the prism with a Pasteur pipette, as they are made from very soft glass. He answers your first question at about 1:10. For gems you use a different instrument, often a laser refractometer. Source: I am a glass chemist.

    What is alpha t?

    • @RaExpIn
      @RaExpIn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alpha t is the critical angle of total reflection. When the angle of the light hitting the surface of the refracting prism gets to alpha t and above it, the light is reflected completely. If it's below alpha t the light is transmitted through the surface.

    • @Maksb16169
      @Maksb16169 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      How can light be reflected back to liquid from a refracting prism because a refracting prism is denser than a sample liquid....
      And total internal reflection only takes place when there is a rarer medium in front ...
      Please 🙏 Ans
