A Gibson with a broken headstock? That's a sensational find indeed!
“How much is that old Banjo over there”
“I need about treefiddy.”
Well it was about that time I noticed this banjo salesman was 8 stories tall and was a crustacean from the Paleozoic Era.
Cool but the lights were mainly to keep the calfskin head tight right before walking onstage. Not a rosewood tonering 😂 although he probably just misspoke.
Most certainly not a rosewood tone ring! He seems to know his banjos quite well, so I'm sure it was just a slip of the tongue. I *was* hoping he'd take the resonator off so we could see inside the pot.
"What did you pay for it?"
"I paid three dollars."
"Three... dollars?"
"Three dollars."
"Three? Three dollars."
"Three dollars. (three dollars)"

Yes, the appraiser was not equipped to evaluate that banjo. Usually they have Fred Oster from Vintage Instruments in Phila. He would have had much more accurate information and would have removed the resonator to show the tone ring and seal.
That's a really good rate of return right there! Oh yea and first.
Would you believe, this older gal singer in PA had a 1937 Martin D-28 Herringbone that she brought down to George Gruhn--and he said, "Well....I can offer you $5,000 for it." She replied, "I think I can do a LOT better than that!" When she returned to PA, she wound up selling it for $30,000.....

$7k is a severe undervaluation

What a beauty, for $3.00. I don't think the appraiser has a clue what he's looking at, $7000.00, for a prewar Gibson. Give me a break!!! Grant it , it's an archtop, but, still !! I prefer flatheads, I believe the majority banjo players do, as well, excluding the great late Ralph Stanley. Just take her to a respected Luthier to have the neck replaced to a correct (Gibson) 5 string, there you go . I don't know why he didn't mention that, either. If that was a flathead, and at an auction environment, sky's the limit. Don't laugh when I said sky's the limit. Maybe upwards to $100,000.00 or more, maybe. That's how rare these things are becoming to find and sought after. What a banjo...
You're not going to get anywhere near $100k for a 5 string conversion with a new tone ring. What makes this banjo so valuable is the fact that all the parts are original.
Lutherian? I would try a Luthier myself or even a Lutherian Luthier.
$100k is what Granada original 5 string banjos like the ones that Earl Scruggs and Sonny Osbourne played.
They made a lot of these 4 string tenor Granadas. 7k is about right.

Rosewood tone ring??? Resonator looks like mahogany. Tone ring bell bronze most likely

I would love to have that banjo. Neck is no big deal. I would convert it to a 5 string anyway.

its a 2peice flange but still a awesome banjo
$7,000?! Please, hand that over to Jim Mills, Steve Huber, or Charlie Cushman, and they will covert that to a 5-string, then it will be worth over $20k, easy.

This man is clueless. That "rosewood tone ring" he was talking about is neither rosewood nor a tone ring. It's maple, and it's a resonator. The tone ring is inside the banjo, and it's made out of steel. Also $7,000 is an absolute STEAL. I sure hope she got that appraised by someone who knows banjos before she ran off to sell it.
I have a 1927 Gibson Diamond 5 string banjo, no idea what it's worth.

Idk if this is sarcastic or not but it really doesn't. Because most ppl that buy the 4 strings whether they be a tenor or a plectrum banjo immediately replace the original neck with a 5 string neck, which is what is used in bluegrass and basically any banjo you hear is a 5 string, unless it's in OLD jazz from the 20s and 30s. And anyone who ends up re necking these banjos always keeps the original neck.
Now it might hurt the value of the banjo as a whole not to have the original neck but not nearly as much as ppl think. Maybe 1000 at the most for a 28 archtop Granada like the one in this video. And if that banjo was a flat head instead of an archtop, and was originally built with a 5 string neck, it would put it in the 250k range
@@04granada yep true - it’ll get converted with a 5 string neck, so the crack isn’t really a big deal
I think Hinson's appraisal price is low. FAR too low.
If that were an original 5 string you could almost add another zero to the value.
She can get way more than that for it. It's a prewar Gibson. Those things can go for hundreds of thousands. Not that I think this is one of them, but still.
Only $100k+ if it was an original 5 string flat head Granada like Earl's. Very few of those. Otherwise $7k for a 1928 TB is a good price.

The neck break is repairable but calling it “minor” is misleading.
The fella they were talking to doesn't know diddley about banjoes. That instrument in that condition is worth $ 50k or more in today's market. If it was converted to a 5-string it could easily be worth$75k or more. Any pre-war Granada brings top dollar.
As a tenor it won't even bring 7k! But if it was an original 5 string, then you could talk 50k.
Nobody is paying that much for conversions. It's the all-original instruments that are getting top dollar.

Yikes! No, not quite that much. These instruments (Gibson tenors) routinely sell in the $2 to $10,000 range. Look up "pre-war Gibson banjo" to find a whole host of listings in that price range. Elderly instruments just sold a tenor Granada in fantastic condition for $4,000, for example.

This reminded me- a good friend of mine used to LOVE inviting Jehovahs Witnesses in and wearing them out with theological debate. Better yet, he’s a banjo player. But I don’t believe he ever owned a Porsche...
The neck and tone ring is going in the trash anyway, so it does'nt matter about the crack.
This guy is not very knowledgeable about gibson banjos... he knows a little, but not a lot... as a tenor in that condition, she's looking at roughly 3k maybe.
