For those who don't know what a petoskey stone is, it's basically a rock and a fossil of rugose coral (technically it's called Hexagonaria percarinata if you want the scientific name). These stones are formed by glaciers when ice pulled stones from the bedrock and ground off their rough edges. They got deposited in the Northwestern portion of Michigan's lower peninsula.
I really enjoy your videos, Klesh. So many of us live in areas where we can't do panning for ourselves, so it definitely helps to be able to watch panning videos like this. I'm actually in the state of Georgia, but close to Atlanta and Dahlonega and the other gold-bearing areas are far Northish of me. Since I can't drive to due medical conditions, that doesn't happen right now. Someday I dream of having either a claim up there or some land near a gold-bearing creek to be able to search whenever I wish and make some extra money.
After a great write up on what a Petoskey stone is, that stone is a favosite, or honeycomb coral
They're most commonly known as a Charlevoix stone. Big difference between the two is the webbing patterns on them. The Petosky stone will have a larger webbing, while they'll be a tighter on a Charlevoix
