  • Emerging Security, Technical and Commercial Risks in Offshore Wind
Prof. Alan Lowdon OBE, Professor in Practice, Durham Energy Institute & Emeritus Chair of DEI Advisory Board.
Offshore wind is now a global industry, with the UK, mainland Europe, the USA and the Far East very active in both developing and constructing new offshore wind farms. Latin America is also waking up to the potential of the sector. However, this all comes at a time of heightened global tensions, in which both cyber and physical attacks on energy infrastructure are growing in frequency. Indeed, energy infrastructure is increasingly viewed as the Achilles’ heel of nations. With this in mind, governments and developers of offshore wind farms now have security of utility infrastructure as one of the major entries in their risk matrices - a situation which is likely to intensify in the short-term, at least. Professor Lowdon’s talk will shine a light of some of the security risks that an offshore wind farm is exposed to and how these risks cascade into both technical and commercial challenges for the offshore wind sector and its key stakeholders.
