    I've just damp styled my hair for the first time ever and I can already see the difference - my waves are way more defined than they usually are. Moreover it usually takes about 4-5 hours for my pixie cut to dry completely (diffuser+air drying) when I wet-style my hair. Damp styling seems to shorten this time significantly. I know the video is 2 years old and probably nobody is going to read the comment, but I needed to share my joy 😄

    I would love to see you use exactly the same products, first with soaking wet hair and then with damp hair. Not on the same day-not the half your hair demonstration I’ve seen in some TH-cam videos. It would be great to see how the same styling products work on your hair in these two conditions.

      Jannelle O'Shaughnessy Engels That would be great! As someone who is early in the process of embracing my curls, I now realize that while finding the right products for my hair is important, it’s equally important to find the right techniques for my hair. And, as you have pointed out so well, one size does not fit all-this goes for products and techniques. Thanks, Janelle!

    I'm about 3 months into my curly girl journey and switched to damp (dry hair misted with water) styling recently and it has completely transformed my hair. I have 2B/HP/Med Den/Fine hair and my hair absolutely cannot handle a lot of moisture at all. While I know I'm still transitioning, it has completely changed how I feel about the journey and other people have also noticed and complimented me on my hair. Damp styling is definitely the way to go for me!

    I've been damp styling for about a week now and thought I was alone in that! My hair is wavy, not curly, so I found that excess water really weighs it down. Thanks for sharing this because now I know I'm not the only one who needs damp styling. P.s. your hair style is my inspiration for my first deva cut in December!

    Thanks for this! I've been really struggling with adding products to soaking wet hair because my hair just doesn't dry! I mean, all day my hair stays soaking wet! The curls are stretched out and I'm just not making any progress with them. What you said about it holding on to do much water that there's no room for product made so much sense! I'm going to try it damp and see what difference it makes.

    Im so new to all this, i'm two weeks in and OMG its sooo overwhelming!!! This was super helpful though!!!! I've made two weeks of attempts at styling my hair in the shower and none of the product was holding, and by the end of my work day i would end up putting my hair in a bun out of embarrassment for the frizz ball i turned into:( thank you for explaining this so thoroughly!

    YES! My hair is low-porosity and it hates soaking wet product application! I started going back to my old "routine" a while ago because i was just so depressed and wanting to get my straightener out so bad! My curls had looked better before I started CG. So I wrap my hair in a tshirt after the shower, get dressed, scrunch it up a bit, add curl activator and mousse and sleep on it. It looks amazing when I wake up! Damp styling changed my life and made me more confident in the CG.

    Love damp styling. I worked out very early that I needed to add the styling after plopping or scrunch out most of the moisture. It even works well adding to 50% air-dried hair. (even if I have to add a little extra water when adding the product). Love how curly yours comes up after mostly air-drying.

    Damp styling is how I always styled my hair before starting the curly girl method, and it worked for me. I have struggled since starting the CGM because it's just too time consuming to wet style my hair before work. I'm going to try damp styling again, but with CG approved products. Very helpful video, thank you!

    This is so weird because my hair is wavy curly and low porosity and I was told the exact opposite. That styling with soaking wet hair was best, and it did really improve my definition but now I'm thinking about going back to damp styling lol. When I used to damp style, my hair really wasn't curly tbh, it was mostly just wavy. I hope this video helps me! You seem very knowledgable :)

    Okay, this explains a lot! I applied my products today to really wet hair and air dried and my curls/hair is super weighed down and limp other than in a few areas. I definitely have better luck removing a good amount of water first before applying products.

    I recently tried this anti worked amazing! I applied leave in on my soaking wet hair I squished it in and got some of that water out. then scrunched with a microfiber towel and applied Devacurl styling cream then a gel on top. I love this because I feel like I get more bang for my buck with products. Like you said, it feels like the hair has no room for the products when you use them soaking wet. I do feel like my hair is still a little weighed down on top but good results for the first try!

    Thank you for this video! I'm about 3 weeks into CGM (don't know that I should count the first week of wrong products and cheating with blow-drying...). Anyhow, I desperately need a different cut (getting one Thursday) and I'm having so many frustrating hair days as I try to figure out what I'm doing. First I thought my hair was high porosity because of how it soaks up conditioner. Now, I think I have low porosity because of how prone to product buildup I am. When I would blow dry straight, my hair would turn out better if I let it air dry a bit before blow drying and adding product. The way you explained it in this video about how the product traps the water in and weighs it down... that made so much sense for me. Tonight I tried damp styling and my hair feels so much better. Less frizz, more volume, better clumps. I still need a hair cut like crazy, but I feel more hopeful that I am on the right path!!

    This method worked great on my hair the first time I tried it! Now I actually understand WHY it works. When I put the products on my soaking wet hair, my hair just wouldn't dry and it takes a few hours to air dry already because it's pretty thick and somewhat coarse. I prefer to air dry rather than diffuse anyways. It takes me about 30 minutes to diffuse my hair and I just don't have the time or patience for it. I loved the results I got with this method and I will continue to use it while it works for me. Plus, I had NO frizz! It is rare for me to not have halo frizz since I live in a very humid place. I've tried SO many methods and always seem to get frizz. I did end up diffusing for about 10 minutes at the end of the day because my roots were just a little damp and I don't like to sleep with wet hair. Thank you for this!

    • @JenericEyes

      I also had great 2nd day hair and barely had to refresh it because the gel held so well that my waves stayed in place and didn't get crushed as I slept. Just awesome!

    I'm still quite new to caring for curly hair (I was in the 'I didn't know I have curly hair' category) so I'm still experimenting with all the different tips and tricks. No more sulfates and silicones for me, that's for sure. But the styling... I've tried the wet ones and they didn't do much for me. Especially when they say 'don't be scared to use a lot of gel'. No frizz, sure, but I loathed the feel and look of the hair. I washed it out again a few hours later. After this video I tried damp styling today and I LOVE the result. Still a bit of frizz, but my curls actually came out great. And the TINY amount of gel I used is holding it perfectly.

    I’m so glad you reminded me of this method. First, I want to say YOU are the one who inspired me to let my curls shine again or at least head in that direction about 5.5 months ago. Thank you!!!
    Recently I’ve discovered my hair is changing, again, and I’ve gone from severe color damage from a stylist over processing my hair (high porosity hair major) to just last week after I did a porosity test I figured out my hair is now low porosity, wowzas! When you mentioned certain things, typically your curls in the back, I thought to myself, “hmm... my hair does that too!!” I’ve finally figured out my new and healthier hair types. Five months ago my hair needed all the help it could get. I went from having 2C/3A/& 3B. NOW, depending on what I use I have 3A or 3B if I refresh my hair with WARM water with mix chicks leave in or something similar. (Yes, I tried it! 🙌🏼😁) You are a rock star!!

      I recently ordered the Bounce Curl light moisture line over the weekend, that you listed in your video, and used it day before yesterday without a styler for my current DevaCurl cut (yesterday). Probably one of my favorites as of recent. I had more definition, volume, and moisture that wasn’t weighed down than usual. I took the plunge to get a big chop yesterday 😬🤣. I’m just a little nervous how much shrinkage I’ll have when I wash it next lol. Since I haven’t used the Bounce curl cream gel yet, do you always use a leave in conditioner when you use it? Do you use the Shea Moisturizer Curl enhancing Smoothie by itself? I went with a travel size to try out and I’m hoping for good things 😊. I hope you are having a fabulous day! As regards to trying the damp styling again (as I used to), this was before my big chop and I noticed some of my hair still needed the soaking wet styling still. I will be trying the damp styling in the near future to see how it works with the damaged hair gone. ❤️🤙🏼

I clarified and then damp styled, and this brought back some curl. I'm going to try a protein rinse (rice water?) To hopefully bring back some bounce!
    Again, thank you!!!

My hair used to look nice but after the last few years since having kids and not being great with my hair routines and lots and lots of buns and ponytails and braids, now that my youngest is 2, I’m trying to get my hair looking great again and I’ve been having such a hard time with styling soaking wet. Thanks for sharing your routine! I love your gorgeous curls. I have low porosity hair and I've tried damp styling but soaking wet just works better for me, ESPECIALLY when it comes to preventing frizz. Part of it is that I'm not necessarily looking for products that penetrate, I'm looking for a light layer on the outside of the strand to help lubrication, shape, and emollience (sealing in the moisture). When my hair is soaking wet it waters down the products I use a little bit which helps me to get fuller coverage of every strand and dilutes them enough to not weigh down my waves.
    I also layer a whopping four stylers (not counting leaving in a very small amount of my regular conditioner). I rake in and then comb through my curl cream followed by my curl enhancer. After that I scrunch in a little Deva foam near my roots. By the time I scrunch in my last layer (hard hold gel) my hair is closer to damp than soaked. I know it sounds like a LOT of products, especially for low porosity hair, but it doesn't get weighed down because I use really small amounts of most of them. I've tried using fewer products but when I cut one out, I can always tell a difference and my hair doesn't look as good. I guess I'm just extra, lol. I always use a generous amount of hard hold gel, though, because I live in a humid climate and not enough gel just means shapeless poof!

    I have fine thin hair and although my hair tends to be more on the high porosity side, damp styling is the only way I can get volume and not have my hair stick to my scalp.

    Your videos are a gift from the gods! Holy crow! Your curl pattern and issues are nearly EXACTLY what I have been having problems with. I have only started my curly girl journey to get the best curls possible a few years ago and I still feel like I have NO IDEA what I am doing. I had no idea to look for protein in the stylers. What should I be looking for on the label? I have been having many hit and misses with the products I have tried and feel really lost most of the time. Was there a specific book/video/guide that you learned all of this fabulous wisdom? Where would a noob go to figure out what her hair needs?

      Hmmm that’s a tough one haha. Probably Blueberry Bliss Leave In. It can be a little bit heavier though so if you want weightless knot today is a good option

    Your hair looks amazing! I did damp styling today, just after using olaplex for the first time! I watched your videos specifically because I thought out of everyone I could find on youtube, your curls were closest to mine.. However, olaplex did not make my hair look like yours, it just kind of stayed the same, which is such a shame, because I have very tight curls on my bottom layer, but then the top and layer and the front pieces especially are just not curling! Damp styling however seemed to work well. Thank you for your videos!

    • @haleyanderson573
      @haleyanderson573 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe top layer needs some protein? I used olaplex for the first time a couple of days ago but also a protein treatment. My top layer curls are a bit tighter but other than that the change is mainly in the feel and shine

    I just discovered you and your explanation about putting products into damp hair instead of soaking wet hair for low por hair makes perfect sense to me. I‘ll try it tonight! Thanks a lot! My hair looks a lot and behaves a lot like yours. Since I don‘t live in the States and can‘t buy most American products, it would really help if you said a little more about the products than just which ones you are using. That way I can try to find something similar in my country (out of the miserly small selection for curly and especially for low por curly hair)....

    • @JannelleOShaughnessy
      @JannelleOShaughnessy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have some product videos working in the future. I’ve tried to not keep the focus on the specific products in these videos for exactly those reasons. Not everyone has access to what I do. I apply all products this way. So whatever you have access to and love should work, of course of damp styling in general work for you.

    • @Attirbful
      @Attirbful 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I will try it tonight! Especially as I feel I put a ton in when it is soaking wet and it seems a lot less is needed if it isn't... And I really appreciate you not being too much into specific products. I live in Germany and many products are not available here or extremely costly (like Deva Curl f.e.). I simply can't afford paying $70 for one medium sized bottle of shampoo... But "curl awareness" is only recently growing in Germany and most European curly Girls must resort to Facebook groups to get any Information on products and routines. So, I (and probably many others) will really benefit from info as to why a certain product is preferrable to another and not just hear brand names that we do not get in the first place... Thanks, Jannelle!

    This was so helpful! I have low porosity hair too, and the protein moisture balance is something that I struggle with. Almost always go too far one way or the other. I am definitely trying this next wash day!

    • @JannelleOShaughnessy
      @JannelleOShaughnessy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have that issue too. Mostly with moisture. That’s one of the reasons I can go so far between washes is because I often do too much water on washday that I can survive perfectly hydrated for a week haha

  • @DebNYCurl
    @DebNYCurl 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your hair is gorgeous! I wish I had the time to air dry though. My hair is thick and coarse, takes too long so I diffuse. Also, looking at your hair I think I want to start trying to part it more to the side like yours I love it! Going to try those products you used and do some video reviews! I love finding new products for curly hair! Thanks!!!

    Before my big chop i found i got better results with soaking wet hair. Tomorrow is my first wash day since the big chop and i think i'm gonna try damp styling. Because my ends were so damaged maybe now that i'm dealing with all healthy curls (it was a legit big chop. 10 inches) damp styling might be better.

    I’m trying damp styling now. I’m a 2b 2c and I think all of the water weighs me down On top of all of the product applies at the same time. My hair never feels like hair it always feels like I have gunk in it. I’m excited to see if dan styling is the way for me.

    My hair used to be a 3a when I was younger, I hated it and straightened it alot and didn't care for it, which caused my hair to loose it's curl and it is now a 2b. I really want to get my curls back but I have no idea where to start, what to buy, what to do. I would really appreciate it if you would give me suggestions and tips on how to get my hair back.
