@@sheacunningham5477 written by ewan mccoll who was of scottish parentage when he left scotland aged nine. he wrote it about the salford area where they settled in manchester. this sang was written about ten years before irish music was born. a was around in the 50s when irish music was just starting by the clancies. they adopted many scots and english sangs.then the dubliners formed in 62 and did the same .then the furies in the 70s. still to this day the irish bands still sing from the same sang sheet.you might want to research a few.

It was famous in the area it was 1949 remember and he was not touring with it and it was covered by at least 6 other artists before the dubliners in 68, they made the song famous as they were touring Europe and America, before then it was not a widely known song. The Dubliners took it around the world. The Pogues is the best version though in my opinion, even Salford City FC use the pogues version as their team song.
