    I chose to use CFL bulbs in my house for a number of reasons. Bulbs with excellent wavelengths for plant growth can easily found hardware stores so finding a specialty shop or ordering online is not necessary in most areas.
    The light fixtures are either fairly cheap or the bulbs can be used in house hold fixtures. The fixtures for CFL are often long tubes allowing you to easily fit more plants under them. Having individual light gives me the flexibility to us what I need when I need it optimizing power consumption
    They also don’t put off a tone of heat allowing you to operate more lights if you desire without having to worry about heat issues.
    The initial investment is lower than the other lighting technologies for instance both of these combine cost me just over 50$. Because these set ups hold fewer watts of bulbs their power consumption is much lower. Even though some of the other technologies are more power efficient they typically come in single units that consume larger volumes of power. The lower energy output makes it much easier to start your seedlings and tender plants inside. Some of the larger systems can cause issues with your seedlings most often related to heat output.
    One of the downfalls of using these CFL bulbs is you generally cant produce full size things like tomatoes and peppers. They will still fruit if you chose medium and small bodied fruit but not to the same density as the same plants outside or under the more costly systems.
    If your looking for light systems for starting seedlings and lower energy plant growth inside during the winter I recommend simple CFL systems. With higher energy systems you can get closer to producing your favorite Tomato or Citrus tree inside during the LONG COLD WINTER
    On the next episode in this series we are going to go through the basics of growing inside. Click here to go to the Indoor Growing Playlist.
    Thank you for spending time with me today. I appreciate it very much! I hope you have a fantastic day!

    Stephen, I looked a few videos that was just too technical for what I was looking for to give my indoor plants the light they need. This video was very informative and very easy to understand. I now know a few of my light are good and a few are not doing anything but using electricity. Now I know what to look for the next time I purchase a grow light or just the CFL bulbs. Great job!

    I have a windowless room but I love indoor plants very much so I've been supplementing mine with a 6500K cool white 8W CFL and 12W warm white cheap grow light both about 3 feet away from my plants. I've been so worried about their health but it's been 3 months and they're still thriving with no issues at all. This has been very helpful! Now I know that all I need to do is find the highest watt CFL available at the hardware. Thank you so much!

      @@movingname3585 I really love the tomato plant smell, but yeah, they do actually have a strong scent. I've never been around a cannabis plant in full bloom to compare, yet, but I''ll bet they are MUCH stronger. The real difference is that neighbors aren't going to complain about tomato stink being blasted out a vent. With legal cannabis cultivation around the corner here in NY, I'm pretty darn interested in legitimately setting up a way overbuilt indoor veggie grow to learn the ins and outs, gardening takes time and patience to learn. Leaning towards LED, mostly for the energy savings, paying to power a sodium lamp for veggies is pure madness.

    I'd like to update this four year old video with my experiences. To start with unless you go to the dollar store most stores that sell lights no longer carry cfl's in my area so they may not be worth the trouble to make a set up now unless you find and store enough for future use. Plus they along with standard florescents contain mercury which means you should dispose of them properly. Both types of florescents have a major drawback in that the wavelengths the lamps produce change over time and the light output slowly reduces so that they should be changed from six months to a year to get the best results from the output. High output florescents produce much more light but cost much more and produce a lot of heat. The Hps and metal halide are better suited for placing high above the plants to protect them from the heat. They also need to be replace at least once a year if not more often and the bulbs alone are fairly expensive. I've gone to the led's that are built for aquariums. They may have additional light wavelengths that aren't available in standard led grow lights but also are readily available. They do put out some heat but usually not enough to create a problem. The lights can have a useful life of years without any change in light color or output. As a simple gauge I have a 2x4x5 foot tall grow tent. Hanging inside are two 600watt led lights. Each light has controls for intensity and an individual on off switch. I've found that if you want thick low growing plants such as lettuce using the blue alone creates a dense leafy growth. The red light encourage taller plants and blooming. If you control the day length to the type of plants you grow and want blooming then it can happen in a week or two. All in all I've tried many different types of lights and for now I believe the led's are the best option for the money, especially if you intend to use the lights a lot. In the long run you'll likely find they are also the cheapest lights to own since you won't likely have to replace a single bulb for the life of the light. Of course there's no guarantee that the lights weren't built by someone trying to finish up the day and go home but that's the case with most things nowdays. I've got led's that have been of aquariums for years without an issue and they're exposed to high humidy and still working.

      CMH is the way. Or LEC, same thing. Cheaper and better than LED's.

    • @71160000

      @@BenDover-mn5db You missed my point. Apples and oranges. I said the hps and mh were suited to being high area lighting such as lighting a large amount of plants. For raising a plant or several smaller plants the led's are far cheaper and better suited. However I also believe that as more powerful led's are produced they will eventually replace high output lights in most uses simply because they use less energy, run cooler, last longer, and most of all are readily available in select wavelengths, something that's not true of high output. True mh and hps produce a lot of lumens for the wattage but the real question is how much of that output is in wavelengths that plants can use and how much is wasted? How often do you want to change lamps and a good lamp in blue wavelengths is generally an easy hundred dollars. Replacing them twice a year can run the cost up way over led's that are for now the cheapest lumens for the dollar. And you still have to get rid of the heat from mh and hps while the led's produce only a fraction of the heat other light sources provide. At one time mh was the way most aquarium hobbyists went to raise corals that require very high lumens. Hardly anyone uses them today as it's simpler to run led's over the tanks for a lot less money and heat while the corals all seems to do better and also show better. And there's still a few who hold on to the old ways simply because they work but for now most have converted over to what they consider to be a better lighting method. If you intend to us mh or hps in growing plants then I would suggest getting complete workup on the lamps you intend to use to see how much of each wavelength they produce and how much of the lamp output is going into wavelengths the plants can't us. Figure the cost of the lamps vs the acceptable running hours before the out put changes, normally around every six months, cost of electricity for the lights, cost of running fans plus amount of fans and don't forget replacement ballasts as they normally have a useful life of around two years before they also can no longer drive the lamps at the expected wavelengths and output. Unless you have a good light meter you may be running lights that aren't producing anywhere near what you think they are so it's quiet common for people to run lamps for a couple of years until they fail not realizing that they're wasting a lot of energy on a probable output.

    • @71160000
      @71160000 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BenDover-mn5db In the end it all breaks down to what's successful for you. As far as soil goes I use a commercial mix with added perlite. After each use I add a little fresh mix to the old mix and a small amount of additional nutrients and simply water until harvest. The commercial mix is pricey but by using it over and over the cost is very reasonable and I've yet to see any problems from reusing it. Most of us don't grow plants over the long term but only over several months so the soil is renewed frequently as new plants replace old. Now the hydro beds in my greenhouse are just the opposite often holding peppers and eggplants for more than a year at a time but they get fertilized twice daily with fish tank water from my aquaculture tank. Good luck.

      ***** Unfortunately I can't cite the source where I read this. About 5 years ago I dived deeper in this subject and bought 8 units of LED panel, 90W (180x0.5W diodes) each. I chosen the blue only version as I wanted to grow wheatgrass for juicing.
      The panel with 90 blue and 90 red diodes was more recommended for plants at the stage of blooming/fruit setting/ripening.
      The blue/red combo isn't as effective than the 180 blue diodes version to grow green vegetation. (According that source.)

    Great job on video...very informative. I have a 60w CFL (4200K) full spectrum light and a 12w LED grow light (blue/red). I just planted my herbal seeds in a 18" x 30" planter. Should I light them now or wait to they pop up?

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally people recommend putting the light on helps germination. What I say generally is I have not seen any support but i follow the practice.

    Nice comprehensive video! I've been using CFL's for two years in a row for winter indoor growing. Most years I have peppers and tomatoes on some of my plants within 6-8 weeks from seed! It's fairly cheap in initial costs and works great. I did an experiment using a couple LED's for young seedlings last year and I'm not sure that they hit the right spectrum for the plant based on the results. The plants just didn't start out as good as they should've.

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Led need to be turned down for seedlings. They get overwhelmed and should be mostly on blue light. Is what the research I found said !
      I love CFL they work for me too !
      Glad you enjoyed the video !

    • @marksustainable5227
      @marksustainable5227 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I heard it being advised that you shouldn't handle hps bulbs with your bare hands. The reasoning behind this is that the oils from your hand transfer to the bulb and can increase the chance of the bulb cracking due to the oil increasing the temperature of the glass.

      alot use them cause they either get free gear from the company to push a product, or they sucked with big lights and think less output is better., most are conned y the color of them when theirs alot more to lighting than colour, like their lacking penetrating output, like candle power. without that your colour isnt worth anything

      my electic bill is cheep kid. watt is a watt and is how cost is reflected. so of course you run less watt it costs less. also less return. i have no heat issues. proper chiller to cool the room. no cost son. water is free here.

    I found some led full spectrum bulbs for my container garden that have so far been working great! The sprouts that have came up are growing very quickly, I've already have some excellent habanero seedlings I've used cfls in the past and I got all my ballasts for free since I'm an electrician and good discounts on bulbs but these purple lights are where its at! I'm definitely going to buy a few more today, the leds I'm using only draw 8 watts and output 100 watts, where when I was using my ballasts theyd draw 40+ watts per bulb or driver I forget which but the bulbs are under 10 bucks a piece, not to take away from the video I enjoyed it and it was really informative I didn't know that tge purple light could ve harmful to my eyes thanks for the heads up brother I'm definitely going to be cutting the lights while I'm working
