My in-laws don't build guitars but started watching your channel because I do and now they both follow your channel. I'm actually going to buy my father in law a shirt of yours. Keep up the good work
I always use a smaller press caul insert than the radius of the fretboard. i like the edges of the frets getting more presion to prevent them from rising
Those exact frethammers are the same ones that you'd see inside Amazon's popular assembly cabinets...I know it for the fact that I bought 2 cabinets and a frethammer...they're extremely good for those controlled taps, I have done 3 stainless steel refrets with those thing
thanks for the recommendation on the fret hammer, wouldn't have thought to search for gunsmithing hammer. just used your link to purchase, hope it is stlll good for your commision. 🙂
Wait. So if it's good enough for you to use on non-standard fret radius installs. It's definintely good enough for me for all fret radius installs. Thankyou!
Any builders here guilty of not even having a fret hammer raise your hands! lol Anyway, that might me be one of the best Fret hammers indeed. Great review man!
Hi, Chris -- 2 quick things I wanted to say: 1. I just made my first pickup winder and wound my first pickup thanks, in large part, to your incredible videos. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us and opening the door for those of us who would have been too intimidated to try it out for ourselves. 2. This video got me thinking about the complexities of the compound radius for a luthier -- how would you go about calculating the different radiuses (or radii?) at different spots, such as where does the 9" radius become 10", 12", 14" etc. and what a good way to determine that is based on what fret you are pressing in to the fretboard? I would think (in an ideal world) that every piece of fret wire, from the first to the last, would have a slightly flatter radius as you get closer to the body, but that seems like a real pain so how would you go about doing a "best fit" based on the typical luthier tools or how would you modify your methods to get that result?
I don't calculate anything. I radius the fret wire to match the tightest radius on the fretboard and tap them in with my hammer. No need to overthink it.
AVID Gunsmithing Hammer. For $17 - BEST budget Fret hammer out there. It has a great handle, four tips, including rubber and brass, and a carrying case! Best of all though, is that despite its compact form factor, it has some serious deadblow weight to it. It knocks frets in like nothing.
Some use two inserts to press in frets in two steps. If there were no spacial limitations with the press is that a viable option and if not what are the cons of that practice? If you put the terms guitar, luthier or guitar related term in the search simple tools used in various other jobs get magically more expensive. The hammer inserts are a nice find.
The plans aren't ready yet. Maybe spring. Maybe summer. The tensioner is a magnetic tensioner for fine wire and non uniform bobbin shapes like those found in a guitar or bass pickup.

@@HighlineGuitars yeah, the announcement said less than 0.1% were read so you cannot blame them for scrapping it although I don'tthink they publicised it very well. Even when you have a fret press, it's always good to have a fret hammer as well. I used home made wooded fret setters in the past, but maybe it's time to get something decent.

I have a mallet with switchable tips that I bought for jewellery-making, it has plastic and metal. I found it's perfect for fretwork
Same. Does yours have a red rubber grip?
Thanks for the review, I just bought one 👍

You always have some of the best advice, when it comes to guitar building, thanks for sharing.
Any time!
Thanks for some great information, Chris!
Would using the press too much hassle for compound radius considering the frett board is lofted during the CAD stage.
I think it would be easier to tap in the frets on a compound radius fretboard rather than press them in.
@@HighlineGuitars Thanks for the advice really appreciated, I just thought of that while watching which saved me buying the press.
Ordered. Thank you!!!

I use a small wood handled brass hammer from Harbor Freight
I'm getting 'Currently Unavailable don't know when will be back in stock' with the link, maybe because i'm in Canada?

do you have plans for the pickup winder in the back ground and can ya tell us about the yellow tensioner for your pickup winder

Hammers are also great for those times when people are late with paying for repairs!!😬
What would it cost for u to build me a 6 string fret less bad fretboard with bear head inlays
I don’t accept commissions.
Is this the greatest video title the world has ever seen?
