Today's painting tutorial is how to paint a peony flower in acrylic. I'm going to show you how to paint with acrylics, step by step, to achieve a beautiful impressionist flower painting. Using layers of paint, color mixing and brush strokes, I want to share with you some painting techniques that can help you paint a peony. This painting tutorial for beginners, is a great place to start painting and experiment with your artistic side.

I didn't like the plate knife
I get such a buzz from watching how you build up the layers but can't actually make myself put paint to canvas! My problem is that it has to be perfect from the first brush stroke..... I don't give myself an easy time and it suffocates my inherent talent...!!
I totally understand! You must take the pressure of yourself and be able to ‘play’ with the paint with no expectations ☺️🙌🏻

Hello, first of all, thank you for this awesome tutorial! However I wanted to ask why we started with a greenish pinkish background but then painted it blue? I mean, the contrast with blue and pink definitely looks better, but I am currently in the process of following the tutorial so I was curious whether I should really paint over my inital backrgound with blue and how would it affect the entire painting? Thank you!
I usually build up at least one to two layers for the background. But the colours are totally up to you ☺️☺️

I absolutely love big, pink, blousie peonies. So, thank you for bringing them back into season.
Any tips on how to clearly distinguish between a painting of a rose and a peony would really help. I struggle to get the petals to look like they curve inwards.

Hi Katie. I just had a go at your peonies and it wasn’t a great result. I have brushes that my kids used at school for GCSE ( many years ago) so i wonder if maybe they’re not the best . I did buy the paint colours you suggest but I got Daler Rowney graduate and the colours are vastly different from yours. Again, should I invest in Golden paints? Or another brand. I’m happy to get the best to achieve the right result. What would you recommend?
Aw sorry to hear you weren’t happy with the result. Honestly all those supplies sound absolutely fine. Can you further explain what isn’t working about the painting? That way I can try and work out where the issue is ☺️
The permanent rose was quite pink and not dark like yours and the greens were again quite light so when I mixed them with the rose to get the dark green leaves, it made a horrible gray colour and I couldn’t get a nice dark green at all . The colours just didn’t seem vibrant like yours.
