This is how we hold in veterinary medicine! I'm surprised it's not also standard in hooman med. It's a great tip!

It’s definitely standard. I came here looking for a technique when this isn’t enough☹️ it’s mostly only a problem on older and very dehydrated patients.

THANK YOU. I have trouble with my hubby doing his chemo stuff at home (I'm not a nurse but he has the most ROLLING veins due to his weight loss!) Now I can get his catheter in. :-)

I’m looking for a vid for older patients who have large wriggly veins that roll. I’ve tried all techniques to stabilize these veins yet I still miss. These veins in your vid is that of a younger pt and is still somewhat stabilized

Hi Vishnu! In those instances with Pts arms like you're explaining try to use your thumb to hold the vein down and tug back on it with your thumb meanwhile the rest of your fingers are pulling their skin tighter. That will create more of a "younger" person's skin type and will help stabilize the vein even more!

@@Katherine_Ann ah, understandable. We only learnt on maniqunes but not on a real patient at school. I eventually did it on a real patient under supervision at my first job.

@@Katherine_Ann We practiced on mannequins and then had to check off on each other (our nursing student partner). We all had to sign a waiver...lol.

And this is why we have phlebotomists lol. We always anchor. The #1 cause of a "rolling vein" is not anchoring properly. I honestly thought this was common knowledge.
