Just to give feedback yesterday I saw this video and commented. I went today and got the carb cleaner and unmounted everything, did as explained and put everything together. Pumped it 3 times and on the first try it cranked. Once again thanks you saved me $, single moms with no child support need more videos like this. Although many don't care for mechanics I love it! Especially if I can save money. I mowed my lawn and love the view of a clean patio.
Awesome video! Very thorough. I am a single mom do-it-yourselfer-whenever-I-can. You just made it to where I can do this. I wish this were available 30 years ago with a life long frustration of mowers not startling. I did this and got a mower that had been stored for 7 years running on the 3rd crank attempt. Keep up the good work!
It's refreshing to see people fixing things instead of throwing it away in this era of disposable tech. I hope you made a nice profit, and thanks for the pointers.
Great video! I did the same thing tonight! my neighbor has a yard man that his dad bought new 12 years ago, mowed 3 times with it decided he didn't like it & its been in his barn ever since! got it running like a new one! vids like yours are how I learned small engines. Thanks!
Excellent video. Very helpful as I try to fix my dead mower. I feel like I have a knowledgeable buddy right by my side. The internet really has changed the world.
Thanks for the excellent video. I have two Craftsman push mowers that have not run for years. I got them the same way you got this one. FIX IT IT'S YOURS. I also have three weed eaters and a Chain Saw the same way. You did a great job explaining what to do. Nice video. Thanks again.
What I learned from this video: My inherited Craftsman (powered by Briggs & Stratton) mower was built in '03, good to know. My carburetor was no where as lacquered or as dirty as the example shown, but failed to start. Mine did not have the two setting screws noted in the video, so I need not worry about wrecking the proper engine speed or fuel mixture. My engine did have a priming pump. I disassembled, cleaned with brake cleaner & made sure the jet was clear. Started up right away!
A DR walk behind trimmer/mower came up for sale on a local website for $25.- last night. I figured, what the H, called the guy, he still had it so I said "consider it sold". I found and watched your video last night. As agreed, I picked up the DR at 10 this morning and by 1 this afternoon I had it running - that includes driving home and a trip to the hardware store for a can of carb cleaner - and yes, I found the can I knew I had when I got home. Thanks for the video!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I inherited a Toro Recycler II from my great aunt. It was pristine but it hadn't been run in over 10 years and I tried to clean carb my first time without watching any videos but couldn't get thing back together right (linkages+parts left over) AND couldn't find a video with exact setup I had (placement of carb, etc.). This is exact duplicate. Watchin your vid was real eye opener. Thx bud.
These two videos - part 1 and part 2 - were very instructive and thorough - and very interesting to me as I am getting started with learning repairs. Thanks!
this was an awesome video! im purchasing a mower that will start/stop and i have never worked on a lawn mower but after watching this video feel more confident about restoring it. the mower im buying is a troybilt 5 hp with bagger. for 25$$
I love the completed job on this mower, and it seem to be working correctly. I have a mower which needs the engine checked out since it has not been run for a long time, and I purchased the mower new and operated it most of it's engine life. I know that it will need a new carburetor kit installed, and the carb needing to be cleaned just to get the mower to start. After that I need to check the compression in the engine and make sure that there isn't any damage in the cylinders. If that checks out, I will go further to find out what the problem is on this mower, and go about fixing it.
Just a few things, first with compressed air. If you blow the air into the fuel inlet it will shoot the little valve seal out and you will never find. Have to buy one to replace it. Second, could not tell but the fuel bowl has an certain way it has to go so float has the maximum room to move up and down. Bowl on wrong float will not drop down like it should. Nice video, keep them coming.
+William Stanley If you are cleaning a Tecumseh carb, they have a drop down area in the bowl for the float, the Briggs and Stratton carbs. you can just put them right up with no problem. It is only on the Tecumseh that the bowl goes a certain way. Have fun and be very careful with the blade area. You can lose a few fingers or a hand.
Good video, very informative. I noticed you used the original carburetor gasket for the air cleaner plate because you didn't have a replacement. Quick little diddy here - simply take some cardboard from a twelve pack of soda, beer (open and consume if available) or whatever and lay the original gasket on top of the cardboard, logo side down. Using a thin tipped Sharpie, trace around the original gasket onto the cardboard. Now take an Exacto knife and carve out your new gasket. For the screw holes simply push the tip of the Exacto knife, in a criss-cross pattern like this +, so it just barely protrudes from the other side. Saves a trip to the hardware store. Hope this helps others.
*This is a copy of my comment on the first video* Thanks very much. and 12 years later, after sitting in the garage all that time, the mower starts up on the 3rd pull. Not bad for a dumb girl, eh? LOL Replaced the oil, air filter, and the gaskets, sanded off the spark plug, and hubs is now outside mowing the lawn (his turn, I mowed it with the electric one last time, what a pain). Had to re-watch the video, cause I couldn't remember how to put the stupid thing back together after the parts showed up. I had been trying to put the float on upside down, and couldn't figure out the needle thingie for the life of me. LOL So I guess next project will be the tiller, and it will be nastier. Thanks again!
Awesome video Bro. Your really great with small engines. wished I would have watched this before buying a new murray push mower this year. Great video!!!
Liked the video, I think that's what is wrong with my nonstarting mower. I have changed everything (air filter, spark plug, oil, gas and tried spraying some carb cleaner) except for a few spurts, no start. I hate paying my neighbor for doing something I can do for myself. I'll try the carb and let you know if it starts. Thanks for the video.
Hot Damn! Fantastic tutorial video, DW6. I just pulled my nearly 20-year-old Craftsman 6.5 HP Briggs & Stratton Rototiller out of the garage. It has been sitting 10+ years with less than 50 hours in it. I had an idea what needed to be done, but hoped to find a step by step video to show me the way. You can't ask for a closer match. Your video was quite clear...thanks a ton. Any chance you have a website or two you would recommend that helps you with your small engines (Parts, diagrams, etc.). Thanks again. Cheers! Keith
Greetings DW6 R LLC - South Africa here. An acquaintance in Durban (coastal) has just sold me a hardly used, Honda powered, cylinder-mower, which has been in storage since 1999. Delivered to me in Lindley (Eastern Free State) 279 miles distant. All inclusive cost to me US$16.74. I'll be following your guidelines all the way inclusive of condition & safety checks on chassis/blade clearances, drive-shaft rotation, wheel-rotation, height adjustment mechanism and whatever else looks either wonky or curious. My background is in counter-insurgency warfare, human resources and International Courier, so if you hear an almighty bang coming in from Africa South, you'll know that I erroneously checked for gas in the tank, with a match. :(
I've done all that but I still won't start. What I have left to do is get this rebuild kit and see if that is my answer. Should be here in a week or so. Thanks for the video. Well explained and easy to follow.
I finally got it to start from watching a video like this. It does spark and have compression. I got the rebuild kit on Ebay and the only thing I needed to replace was this tiny grommet in the carburetor. Removed it, cleaned it out and put in the new one. Boom! Started right up. 11 years it sat in my garage and these videos saved me
GREAT DEMO & THANX FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE FOR ALL OF US " WANT TO KNOW HOW'ERS " LOL QUESTION : WHERE CAN YOU PURCHASE A CARBURETOR PARTS REPAIR KIT ???
Many thanks to doublewide6 for the two vids on getting a mower running again. Through my own fault and trepidation it took me several disassembly and reassembly sessions over the course of a week to finally get it right. The key I think is to be patient and thorough the first time through. I finally soaked the carburetor in a cup of gasoline overnight, cleaned one last time with a long straight pin and then reassembled. On the first pull the motor fired right up and ran like new. The video was a perfect fit for my Craftsman mower and Briggs and Stratton engine.
I found the video very informative. I would like to suggest that there could be some improvement on the lighting and camera work as it was difficult to see several steps.
I'd clean the carburetor. If it hasn't been started in a long while, try taking the bowl off of the carburetor to get any old gas out and dirt or anything that has made it's way into the carburetor. Unbolt the carburetor and take the bowl off, clean it with carburetor cleaner and take small wire and poke through any holes that are on the jets, and blow through them. If you can then it's clean.
Or you can dump fuel into the carb and hope that it starts but you probably would still have to clean out the jets and all of that in that amazing video :)
My push mower was purchased last year around September. I used it like 5 times, I tried to crank it up this weekend nothing. Practically new and not working. I went online and saw what I did wrong, I left old gas in the tank. I emptied it, put new gas and changed the spark plug. Nothing. Went online again and saw how to clean a carburetor with a paper clip. Nothing. I did not use carb cleaner to clean the holes just a paper clip. I probably did not clean them fully. When I unmounted the carburetor it had no gas in it and the tank was full of new gas, so I tried cleaning the carburetor with a paper clip. I thought I installed the part wrong so I clipped the lines again and unmounted everything, after I took the carburetor apart it was full of gas, so I did something right! But it still doesn't crank. It is obviously clogged somewhere cause now it kind of wants to but no way turn on. Before it was harder. I will try with the Carb cleaner and keep you posted.
Good instructions. Had to laugh though, first it hadn't been started for EIGHT YEARS, then it was TEN and finally at conclusion it hadn't been started in TWENTY ONE years. LOL
The rubber seat should have been removed and inspected, I always replace them. you just got lucky on this one, after they set as long as you claim the rubber seat will harden and sometimes crack. And again the fuel tank needs to be cleaned out as well, all the gunk you found in the carb. bowl will of course be in the bottom of the tank. And over time it will clog everything up again & again, but a clean tank is a must and a new seat for the needle would be nice as well.
Good tip about not tightening the bowl bolt too tight. I broke one by accident trying to "loosen" it while it was upside down still on the engine. I was actually tightening it and crumbled like a piece of cake. Whoops there went $20. Ebay - China to the rescue.
Umm is there anyway my mower doesn't ha r a carborator? I looked in the owners Manuel but I can't seem to find it. This video did look simple enough but I have a new last year mower and it won't start. I left gas it to 😢.
Hey, when you power washed the mower, did you power wash the engine also? The case around the engine looked clean and I need to power wash my mower but scared I might mess it up...lol
Cover the air filter, carb and muffler hole with a plastic bags. Don't spray the bags when you power wash. The rest of the engine and everything else is fine to spray. Doublecheck that the air filter and under bag areas are not wet when you start it.
You mentioned that you were going to sell this mower. I bought a non running Toro personal pace mower. Went through it listed it. A person replied how many hour's year if mower. It was in good shape, I replied I bought it non running and went through it. The person lost interest. It sold few hours later. I don't believe in making up a story for customer.
All the interesting bits about cleaning with ultra-sonic whatever, and with gas, we could not see, but also most times you held the pieces you were talking about in the shade so we could not see what you were talking about. Next time get someone to do your videos in even light and also with the camera not hand-held and swimming all the time but fixed on the object firmly without moving. Also reduce and remove the repetitions. Thanks.

Mother/Son bonding session got the mower started and son now mowing the grass. Thank you!
You're a very good teacher. Thanks very much for taking the time to help us out.
So nice to hear easy informed comment, patience and no stupid music! Thanks for a great video and learning session.

does it still run
Excellent video. Very helpful as I try to fix my dead mower. I feel like I have a knowledgeable buddy right by my side. The internet really has changed the world.

gr8 fix ....more people should do this kind of stuff.... instead of throwing things away.....
mikeatc33 Most people don't want to take the time to fix stuff.
And people like us wouldn't be able to do it anymore cuz nobody would throw them away
doublewide6Most people think with the president we have everything should be FREE and easy with gum drops on the side.
mikeatc33 Thank the epa and ethenol
Thanks I also have a bunch of chainsaw, weedeater, blower repair videos for you to take a look at.
These two videos - part 1 and part 2 - were very instructive and thorough - and very interesting to me as I am getting started with learning repairs. Thanks!
Great job man
AHHHHHH what a sweet sweet sound. theres something so satisfying about reviving an old engine back from the dead

Great pair of videos on giving new life to that mower, doublewide6! Good stuff.
I have seen part 1 but I just found this one. Thanks for sharing part 2. I hope that old mower worked out for you.
Great video. Going to fix my mower that has been sitting for 5 years. For future videos you may want to add a light so that you don't get the shadows.
Thanks for the video. Clear instructions, good video. Looking forward to getting my mower started again!

good job!!!
What do you do for a troy-bilt
Self Propeller mower, that will start but it will only run a little, then it stop.
Thank you :)
i like this video, thank's
would you be able to do it to a zero turn mower

Hey man this video needs more ads! Maybe every 15 seconds instead of every 30 seconds.
What happen to rubber seat that goes in the hole before the pin.?
excellent!
Top stuff

You mentioned that you were going to sell this mower. I bought a non running Toro personal pace mower. Went through it listed it. A person replied how many hour's year if mower. It was in good shape, I replied I bought it non running and went through it. The person lost interest. It sold few hours later. I don't believe in making up a story for customer.
Do you have videos on sale to buy?
I always get nervous when they are about to start the vehicle at the end of these videos
62 yr old single woman thanks you
Oil change perhaps, otherwise it will kill the engine soon.
Thanks.
Good vid, thanks!
