LEEUWARDEN, Netherlands: the BEST medieval town of the NORTH!

- Did you know the best historical city in the North of the Netherlands? The Netherlands, or Holland, is known for Amsterdam with its canals, art and rich history. And also Rotterdam, the modern port city and all its architecture! But there is much more of course, like Friesland for instance. In the Golden Age, the capital city of Leeuwarden in the North of the country, was a glorious fortified keep. A walk around the city center will take you back to that time, the seventeenth century, and even medieval dungeons and castles. We visit an old prison that kept enemies of the state during the World Wars, but now has cultural clubs and a library. You can still see the streets charming market that dates from the Renaissance period and there is a leaning tower that's been standing proudly for over five hundred years. We see the Blokhuispoort, Oldehove, de Waag, Jacobijnerkerk and much more. To top it all off, we sleep in the best hotel of the province Friesland. Enjoy it with us!
Our trip to the Netherlands is the first time we are back home after 1,5 years of traveling all over the world. Before this you saw the big journey through Africa. It was the end of a trip that started on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. Thanks for the tour . I saw a large Escher show in Houston recently . Amazing artist. Cool seeing where he grew up, Beautiful city. I want to learn more about The Dutch Golden Age. Do you know of any good books ? There is an exibit in Ft. Worth Texas showing Dutch Golden Age pieces at the Kimball , I'm planning to visit. Thanks again .

The “cute house” with the stairs you talked about is the Keimpemastins, built in the early 1300’s. It’s the oldest still standing house in the city.
