We see this how-to's and self-help vids, but often fail to thank those who suffered the time and pain to figure out some of the problems... thanks for taking the time to post the vid -- your hard work and effort is truly appreciated. My wife's 2012 Sport hatch light indicator came on and the hatch took a dump... another vid indicates a possible wire harness inherent problem -- not looking forward to fixing this problem. But we love the little car.
Thank you! This video was very helpful!!! I was able to replace the hatchback latch with no problems at all! I cannot thank you enough for making and posting this video!!!!!!
My wife has a '12 Pop and the lift back didn't work today. Fob and external switch were unresponsive. I removed the cover, which was being a pain in the ass, and attempted this. I did have to resort to pliers to pull it off and sacrificed a couple of the plastic snaps. Unfortunately, for us, our latching mechanism isn't the same as yours. However, in the lift back, where the wire plugs into the locking mechanism (big white plastic shroud around the solenoid/locking mechanism), I was able to see a slot with a metal bracket. I slipped my screwdriver in there and pushed down. Voila, open sesame. I took photos and videos of the process. If I can find the time, I'll upload mines. Regardless, thanks for posting this. It got me moving in the right direction...
As designed for, on my 2012 White actuator body (not the latch) there is a SLOT with a metal lever. I pushed the lever down with a screwdriver (very easy) and opened the hatch
there is a silver tab behind the elec connection on the latch itself. just take a screw driver and push down on it. takes a few minutes to find...its inside the hatchback part of the latch. mine had corrosion on the connector that goes to the switch where the license plate lights are. cleaned them up and some grease, good as new. good luck
Thanks for taking the time to post. Mine is out of warranty a year and the latch won't open. The dealership wants $100 to look at it and says it's most likely an electrical problem associated with the top. We shall see. But thanks for posting the solution for getting into it now.
Thank you so much for this!!! My brake lights have been out and i couldn’t open my hatch! I talked to a fiat dealership about fixing this. They said they go out all of the time 😔 around $200 to fix
I don't know how you went a whole year without having to change your brake bulb. My car is 4 years old and I've had to change the head lamps about 7 times (once they both burned out!) and a tail light more than once a year. That's why we're watching this video now- we need to change a tail light.
DO NOT USE THIS METHOD YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR LATCH. The manual release lever is just that, a lever that's above the latch hes talking about in. You'll need a flathead to push the lever down and take off the back panel as he did. It's right beside the plug for the locking mechanism
the most helpful video ever! my rear hatch won't open and the licence plate light only works when it wants to. (it's a 2012 Pop). my understanding is the wiring they used is too stiff and opening/closing the rear hatch eventually breaks the wires. i can be driving down the road and occasionally hear the rear electric lock mechanism activating. other times, i get no response at all from the remote and there's no getting that hatch open! now i know a secret, lol. ;)
Wow, I watch the reviewers video of what I could see and I read Mr. Rodriquez somewhat terse but knowledgeable review and I am thankful for all assistance as I am somewhat mechanically challenged. Peace and Love!
Thanks for posting it. My next solution for the wiring that breaks in the hatch is to get flexible silicone wires. I will run them through and solder one end inside the hatch and the other end hopefully in the car. But i haven't tried it yet.
As mentioned elsewhere, successfully employing this method will likely break your latch mechanism. I was only able to release the latch only after completely breaking one side of the latch housing apart. Maybe the original poster got very lucky?
My European spec 2012 Lounge doesnt look anything like that. Completely different latch mechanism so I couldn't use this method. Still trying to figure it out.
Thankyou. I've just bought a crashed Fiat 500 that has no power as the main fusebox under the hood has been crushed so no power to the car. I need to get into the boot (trunk) so this is handy, thanks!
My 2014 Pop had the boot refuse to open after I had the battery disconnected for maintenance. Similar to the 2012 as above, my 2014 has a black plastic button on the left, as you face the catch from inside. After locking / unlocking with the remote key, it seems to work fine now.
It did helped me out. Thanks! I've just purchased an used 500 12" and was wondering "what if this fob stop working"? Anyway, not sure if you solved your wife's 500 trunk problem, but I wonder if it is not in the cables up there where it closes. You can easily find a rubber duct going out from the car to the trunk door on the top left corner of it and it is in a very bad position, since using this trunk with a certain frequency might ruin those cables running there. I reinforced mines with some thermal wire sleeve and wire tape. Just in case, you know?
Check those wires coming through the body on the hatch door it is not protected enough and sheds the insulation off the wires and you will keep blowing fuses
Thanx! It would be nice if Fiat would fix this problem, but they do not care about the side skirts falling off, seat belts that will not retract, windows that will not roll up, tire warning light always on, door handles falling off, or a 100 more things. This car is the worst of the worst!
I'm on my third door handle of the two door Fiat 500 and the second time the trunk stopped opening. I am beyond frustrated with this car and the dealer.
stan slam Agreed. A complete piece of cheaply made junk that they refuse to support. Just fixed a door handle with eBay part for $25. Dealer wanted $600!!
Looks like you alrrady broke all the plastic buffer material that surrounds the metal. I tried this on my 2012 Sport & there is no gap as illustrated unless you've already broken/ripped/gouged all the plastic buffer material away first. Not ready to do that.
We need to all leave a review to First 500 cause be it's a default and they should have a recall but only if more ppl would report it please I have a 2012 Sport
DO NOT FOLLOW THIS VIDEO YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR LATCH!!!! _ The actual manual open lever is built into the trunk latch. You have to remove the fabric trim from the inside of the trunk hatch. There is a slot that you can push a screw driver into and slide the lever down. Once you climb into the back of the car, pull the body clips from the interior trim. Then fold it down so you can see the WHITE PLASTIC BODY OF THE TRUNK LATCH. On the driver side of the latch body there will be a slot about 10 cm tall and 1 cm wide. There is a SMALL METAL LEVER that you push down using the end of the SCrew driver. IT REQUIRES ONLY A GENTLE PUSH!
OF COURSE IT WONT OPEN, CAUSE THIS VIDEO IS BULLSHIT THE EMERGENCY LATCH IS LOCATED ON THE SOLENOID INSIDE DE TRUNK LOOK WITH A FLASH LIGHT AND FIND THE LATCH SOLENOID IS WHITE AND MOUNTED ON THE MECHANICAL PART OF THE LATCH AND YOU WILL SEE A GROOVE FACING YOU AND A PLATED ARM IN THE GROOVE SLIDE IT WITH A SCREW DRIVER AND WILL OPEN
I don’t know what to do no more. I am tired of not being able to use my trunk for groceries and stuff and having to put everything in back seat. I have 3 kids. I have to have one of my kids in front seat and my second child on back seat one side and my baby in her car seat in middle. And I use the back seat behind driver to put stuff. It’s getting annoying. My trunk won’t open at all. And the same time my doors won’t lock or unlock with key. It makes the sound and all but it won’t lock or unlock and I can’t find where to see how to fix this problem.
My wife has one too. What a piece of shit car. Mine is a little different its a 2012. I’ve been trying to pry it for an hour and it won’t go. I’d post a picture but can’t on TH-cam Update. Going this video and was very easy. th-cam.com/video/SUmjVRdwe1U/w-d-xo.html
IS SO BAD THAT YOU SPEND TIME MAKING A VIDEO TO GIVE PEOPLE THE WRONG INFORMATION, THE PART OF THE VIDEO THAT IS NOT SHOWN IS THE GUY WITH REMOTE OPENING THE TRUNK, CAUSE YOU WELL KNOW THAT LATCH WILL NEVER OPEN THAT WAY, THE LATCH UNLOCKS MANUALLY BY THE SOLENOID LOCATED INSIDE THE TRUNK ITSELF.
THE SOLENOID IS THE LITTTLE ELECTRICAL MOTOR THAT IS ATTACHED TO THE LATCH (INSIDE THE TRUNK WHITE COLOR). LOOK INSIDE THE TRUNK DOOR THE AREA WHERE THE LATCH IS MOUNTED LOOK WITH A FLASHLIGHT ON THE OPEN HOLE JUST BELOW THE LATCH AND YOU WILL SEE IT THEN FIND A PLATED LEVER THAT IS VISIBLE ALONG THE SOLENOID AND INSERT A SMALL SIZE SCREWDRIVER AND SLIDE IT UNTIL THE PLATED LEVER MOVES THEN THE LATCH RELEASE AND OPEN THE DOOR
Your a fucking idiot apparently or just completely not mechanically inclined I work Chevy who owns fiat and this is the method we use in the dealership smartass
Hi I apologise for not seeing or responding to ur comment earlier what year and model is ur fiat the latch release in this video is for the lounge the pop and other models are done slightly differently
Yes this helps me. Thanks for taking one for the team in spending hours looking for the manual release.
We see this how-to's and self-help vids, but often fail to thank those who suffered the time and pain to figure out some of the problems... thanks for taking the time to post the vid -- your hard work and effort is truly appreciated.

Had to put my heart and soul into taking those clips out

Awesome man! My damn fiat just stopped working ...you saved the year 2021!
Thanks so much for sharing!! I will try this. Damn Fiat 500's seem to ALL be having this problem with the trunk/hatch.
Replacing my latch later today and THIS will save me so much time! Thank you.
As designed for, on my 2012 White actuator body (not the latch) there is a SLOT with a metal lever. I pushed the lever down with a screwdriver (very easy) and opened the hatch

This worked for me. The screwdriver in the latch thing just about broke the latch.
is the latch on the inside of vehicle or contained in the housing on the outside?? Please help, I'm ready to spit bullets
Bill can you describe this alittle better, not seeing a silver tab in fiat. Maybe post a pic??
Sean McNierney, Did you find it? there's great pics on the fiat forum. good luck. I'm having same problem, but intermittent.
Yes I did and it worked thank you
thank you we have been trying to figure this out for hours!!! this has been the only clear instruction on how to get this. thank you!
Thanks for taking the time to post. Mine is out of warranty a year and the latch won't open. The dealership wants $100 to look at it and says it's most likely an electrical problem associated with the top. We shall see. But thanks for posting the solution for getting into it now.

Excellent you plus tube and saved those hours, many thanks 😊
I haven't been able to open my hatch in over a year. Thank you so much for posting this, I need to change my brake bulb.
I don't know how you went a whole year without having to change your brake bulb. My car is 4 years old and I've had to change the head lamps about 7 times (once they both burned out!) and a tail light more than once a year. That's why we're watching this video now- we need to change a tail light.
Had to replace brake lights twice in less than a year, replaced a headlight last year and now another headlight is out...ughhhh

Berrygrace19 is correct The method in the video will result in damage to the release.

God bless u saved lots of my time!!
No lie sure did help with my daughter's Carrillo Lil mini tonka
Thank you so much!!! Was completely puzzled. And my inspection is coming up, too.
Thank you❤❤❤❤ such a time saver

Thank you! This helped so much.
OMGoodness thank you times ten!!!
Wish me luck my trunk crapped out last weekend and I have had a pretty large table and chair trapped ever since. Hopefully I'll be able to reach.
Thanks dude! You saved me hours

Brilliant thanks from UK
Thank you so much for showing me.
Check those wires coming through the body on the hatch door it is not protected enough and sheds the insulation off the wires and you will keep blowing fuses
Going to try it now ! 🤞
Can u do it without taking off the moulding
Will definitely try it
Thanks dude
Thanks for this!!
this is awesome! thanks so much!!
OMG! Thank you!
Nice bro
Thank you!
You are my hero
Fiat 500 number plate lights not working
Thank you so much
Funny mine stopped working as soon as the warranty wore off also. 2014 500L Easy
So do you have to do this everytime you need to get into the trunk?
Dude when I say this was fucking needed !!!!!!!! Thank you !!
Thanx!

stan slam / my FIAT is experiencing those same tthings
I'm on my third door handle of the two door Fiat 500 and the second time the trunk stopped opening. I am beyond frustrated with this car and the dealer.

Kerry Andersen If it happens again you can fix the door handle yourself with a $25 eBay part.

Thanks for this clip. One question would I need to do this every time my daughter wants to open the boot? Thanks
THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH
thx buddy 🖒👍
Ta very much.

@@GUSTAVO34NY thank you Daniel! You had the key to unlock the latch. Now to fix the solenoid
doesn't work for me

My wife has one too. What a piece of shit car.
Mine is a little different its a 2012. I’ve been trying to pry it for an hour and it won’t go. I’d post a picture but can’t on TH-cam
Update. Going this video and was very easy.

Turn your phone 90 degrees and your videos will be a million time less annoying to watch
You are full of BS, the latch is above it in the plastic latch with a metal pin inside a slot which you can see without missing it !
Thank You 🙏🏼 😊
THANK YOU
thank you!!
