- Probably my favourite PT song.
Explanation of the intricate part, from a post by Gavin himself, in DrummerWorld:
"It starts with a guitar in 5/8 and then I play in 7/8 with the bass drum & snare drum - on top of that I play a dotted 8th note on the ride cymbal. The bass joins in with a pattern in 7/8 (chords change every 4 bars) and the keys and guitars join in the dotted 8th note. Eventually that dotted 8th becomes an 8th note in 12/8 as we modulate into a different feel. Make sense?"
Basically he plays a 7/8 time signature with his left hand (snare) and right foot (kick) and a 6/8 (or 12/8 if you want) with his right hand on the ride bell. The guitar follows the right hand with its 6/8 pattern, ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta, while the bass goes with the snare. The fact that the two time signatures are different means that every beat on the snare will be 1/8 late with respect to the right hand because one is 7/8 and the other is 6/8, but after 6 bars eventually the gap will be 0 again.
I do not own the rights of the video, which has been uploaded merely to advertise the Anesthetize DVD and encourage its purchase. - เพลง
He's playing in 7/8, but accenting every 3rd 16th note on his bell. In 4/4 time it's a simple 3 over 4 polyrhythm, but I've never seen anyone do it in 7/8. He's an alien!
Colin-sempai knows whats going to happen and he likes what he listens to. He slowly moves his fingers towards a new fret position. He watches the people in the public trying to sync the headbanging to the signature, but he knows. He gently smiles and enjoys it. He's pleased for what they just did.
Have I found a fan of Porcupine Tree, who still likes anime and numerology? :o
I don't think we will ever see anything like Porcupine Tree in the future. They said the same about Zeppeling, Floyd and The Beatles. But if the kids in future ever experience a band in their generation like Porcupine Tree, I will be proud!
Gavin Harrison is a subdividing machine
+Gianluca Pesaresi Totally. I've been told Harrison can divide by zero - the answer is another awesome groovy rhythm.
Colin Edwin's shit eating grin at 6:28 when everything syncs up again is priceless.
hahaha so good, gotta love him
Colin is so sweet
We can all agree that he's the happiest dude alive
When i saw this song first time, at around 6:25 , i thought "Hey...watch that bass player smile. Like he plays that bass..just great!
I know! Right? Seems like he's always smiling. I would too if I was able to make that kind of sound and music!
It takes a superior talent like Gavin Harrison to pull this off.
manco82 he’s a monster
Not the most intense drumming, but dammit it's the smoothest and cleanest, cleanliness is next to Godliness, see where I'm going with this?
Read Marcus Aurelius. I'm sure he had a passage on Gavin Harrison.
What's the most intense drumming, a/c to you?
Jon Wesley is flipping unbelievable.
I understand that different people have different tastes, but i would love to know why one would dislike this?:D
99 to 1 like to dislike ratio, i would call that well within the likelihood that they were all misclicks.
Sad that I never got to see them live. Didn't get into them until about 2009. One of the top bands of our time.
JTNugget same here, mate. I found out about them earlier than you, but that wasn’t early enough to see them live.
You'll have a chance in 2022.
5:04 Anesthetize !
yeah i know! Love it when bands continue motifs
The odd meter section of this is just brilliant! Such precision! Well, everything they do is great but I get goosebumps when they really sync up and vamp out!
Best. Band. Ever.
Richard Barbieri is so damn underrated!!!
"What time signature are we in now?" is what I have to ask myself throughout porcupine tree songs
Well, in this song you have a choice of a few at any given time ;-)
Basically he plays a 7/8 time signature with his left hand (snare) and right foot (kick) and a 6/8 (or 12/8 if you want) with his right hand on the ride bell. The guitar follows the right hand with its 6/8 pattern, ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta, while the bass goes with the snare. The fact that the two timing signatures are different means that every beat on the snare will be 1/8 late with respect to the right hand because one is 7/8 and the other is 6/8, but after 6 bars eventually the gap will be 0 again
3:17, what a kick ass groove
I would hate to try drumming this song :D. Gavin Harrison is a god
As a drummer, I kept going back to this song for about a month and half before I could begin to feebly grasp the segment that starts around 4:58. I can manage the dotted eighth note on the ride and the 7/8 on bass and snare, but I fucking fall apart when I try to replicate Gavin's tom fills during that passage. The man is a god damn genius.
+squeak145 i noticed at 5:58 its some kind of poly-rhythmic thing going on. not sure if thats what you meant.
Agreed it kills me too. He makes it look so easy.
All these songs from Nil Recurring are so much better live.
FOABP as well. Because the production isn't as timid as the albums
Amazingly surprising outro !!
I was there on both nights and the audience was pretty energetic. Somehow it doesn't come across on the dvd. Probably because of the editing (FOABP for example was from the second day and was there played more like an encore).
When hearing this song What Happens Now? I can rest in peace when that day comes, and I hope later ratter than sooner! So, I can see and hear PT reunion tour.
Hard to believe this has been posted just over 3 years and only 84,515 views.
Here's the deal directly from Gavin. He's playing in 7/8 with his snare and kick, and the ride cymbal is in 3/16.
Search TH-cam for the video entitled "Gavin Harrison at PASIC 2008: Overriding odd meters to smooth out the groove." He demonstrates it at the 2:00 mark.
6:23 even Buddha on the bass is impressed by Gavin
Exactly!! The entire crowd is just Anesthetized
One of the best if not the best PT song
1:46 "Release the Gavin."
he's pure musical poetry. He owns the drums. he does what he wants with the beat. And so does Gavin. That's why I love them both. I like to think people will look at Gavin in 20 years the way we look at Vinnie today.
If you compare say Tool to Dream Theater, DT's music is more polymetric and Tools is more polyrhythmic. I was listening to Images and Words the other day and I can see why people say the time signatures sound forced at times. I find Porcupine Tree make odd times really flow and groove whereas Dream Theater time just shifts very obviously and it doesn't have that smooth flow.
fuzzylogiceire tool make odd times sound organic as well
Even more so than porcupine tree I think
Rex Ross I believe Tool got stucked in their sound, everything around them is overhyped, i find Porcupine Tree music much more diverse, by far, imho
@@winstonjaquez3996 Tool is more free-flowing or trancey. PT is a little less out there but is indeed more diverse in general. DT can be haphazard with the time signatures while at the same time playing to each other like glue. They all have their place.
Still captivates me with its perfection in expressing something very scary and unfortunately realistic...very fitting music for the subject. One of my favorites...though I also love SWs.solo material...keeps on coming! I LOVE YOU SW!
A rare moment when Steven just sings.
I swear, the songs on the Nil Recurring EP are as good as, if not better, than the tracks on Fear of a Blank Planet
One word,
Genius.
5:15, EARGASM.
Best 8 minutes of my life.
Like the first light of dawn, this music opens the eyes to new promises and all the wonders of nature. Evocative of belief in "the afterlife" and powers beyond observation, this piece pull the strings of the heart, draw nostalgia and awaken loves, skinned lives and sleepy watchmen
Everything is just in the right place: Perfect!
Amazing Performance
Awesome!
5:15 my brain has a retraction
absolutely brilliant. What verse , what riff ! Wow
This is wonderfull!!!
Dat Wesley's solo @ the end :o
That one heck of a psychedelic solo by Wesley there.
Jesus this song is out of this world. I still dunno how can every musician play at their own pace before syncing all together at the same speed not going insane before that 😂
What ever it is that Gavin is doing its sublime!!!!!
Thank god PT started making music!!!!
Indeed. I absolutely love this band, there's only one other band I've ever liked as much and I probably like PT more than them now.
OMG what an emotion and brilliant musicians
Amen to that. The crowd is amazed.
That Wilson's high note moves me everytime
Dude, I completely agree. It's unlike Dream Theater, where the odd time signature sounds "forced."
I agree, altho you have to admit that differently from most of other prog bands, PT's songs flow so nicely that you almost forget of the odd time signature. Think about "the sound of muzak" for example. To be fair they also do the trick the way round: "bonnie the cat" is a simple 4/4 yet it sounds madness
There's nothing wrong with this crowd. They're just mesmerized. Nothing's worse than people clapping, singing along, talking, etc. during a performance. Especially a PT performance. Tickets cost too much to be listening to some drunk clapping out of time or singing wrong lyrics.
They seem to enjoy every single little tiny note they play, and it's always like this!
Im a new fan .... all I can say is I am more than impressed by this band ! Grew up on Priest, Negent,Scorpions, UFO etc.... This band is tight ! Very appreciative new fan !
Excellent music. Really liked the starting
Это фантастика! Космический улет!
W H A T ?! This is amazing.
As boring as people may find Richard... to me, a guy like this who add 574 layer of depth to anysong with rich and subtle soundscapes is a dream keyboardist!
What a killer band!
the way you described how he played.....+1
Goosebumbs on the outro!
They're a different genre than Porcupine Tree really, indie I suppose, post punk and a lot of electronic influences in a good bit of their stuff Start with their first album Silent Alarm I'd say, Very energetic album
GOOD HOLY FUCK I LOVE THIS SO MUCH.....
that is true, i was listening to the recording this morning while driving and I thought the same. More participation wouldn't kill anyone :)
You got it.... He's accenting every 3rd 16th note. He's big in to odd groupings of 3, 5, and 7. These are groups of 3, but to do that in 7/8 is why he's one of the best in the world.
Songs with rather 'negative down thinking' lyrics, like Jim Morrison and Nick Cave, never really caught me. Exceptions have to be made, this song starts to rock at 3:15, but even more so at 5:04. Awesome!
Only 13,235 views? You've gotta be kidding me? I guess this is one of the all time greatest sleeper songs ever made by PT? So "What Happens Now?"
Welcome !
i was there, in that crowd, and i felt exactly the same...yet it wasnt that kind of concert. Steven got us to beahave somehow :D
I'm going to have to take this afternoon to figure out what that means...
Get All you Deserve, steven wilsons new dvd is coming out in sept. search in harmony korine stephen wilson live and you'll find it. seems like the crowd has more energy
Now I get it. Thank You.
UGH!!! I am torn inside. I am both extremely enraged and extremely glad that Porcupine Tree is not very famous. They're FREAKING UNBELIEVABLE, and the drummer is the BEST FREAKING DRUMMER EVER, and they deserve more. Then again, if they were mainstream, they would be ruined, played on the radio constantly and listened to by people who only pretend to like them, and they'd get way too much criticism from idiots. GAH!
Yeah, he's good. Has an unusual style but I suppose that's what seperates the best from the rest.
I'm glad I could help :) My favourite drummers are Gavin himself and Vinnie Colaiuta.
Bellissima!!
Batteria difficilissima!!
5:15 fuck that ! shuts down PC
+Storm Pooper At first you just think "WOT???" but once understood how to play it´s very easy :)
from a post by Gavin himself, in drummerworld "It starts with a guitar in 5/8 and then I play in 7/8 with the bass drum & snare drum - on top of that I play a dotted 8th note on the ride cymbal. The bass joins in with a pattern in 7/8 (chords change every 4 bars) and the keys and guitars join in the dotted 8th note. Eventually that dotted 8th becomes an 8th note in 12/8 as we modulate into a different feel. Make sense?"
I wish understood... But reading this and listening again just confirms how bloody wonderful it is, and how talented they are together.
Never heard of them. Gotta check em out.
genius
That guitar riff is in 'Anesthetize' at some point, isn't it?
i am not a drummer, but it does sound as if two different time signatures are playing over one another. I could be wrong but the bass and drums seems to be at a different time than the guitar starting at like 5:25 and then at 6:27 they all come in together again. At least that is the way it sounds to me.
(the smile, and the change in time, are roughly at 6:25)
After paying £70 for a Rush ticket, I think PT tickets are reasonably priced!
I know as I posted that comment you are referring about. In the previous one, the one you replied to, I was referring to the time signature, not to the actual notes he plays.
Seriously! I've been wondering for ages why they didn't just put all of the songs on there. They obviously had the money to have them all recorded and produced properly, what would've been wrong with just releasing the whole as one incredibly epic package?
why be concerned about the Time Signature , JUST LISTERN AND ENJOY
Me too, because hints of unspeakable Apocalypse they wrap around our souls distraught!
Now that's a happy bass player 6:27
I think Colauita can be as technical as those guys when he wants to be. Joes Garage by Frank Zappa. That has some of the oddest time sigs ever. Also, his rudimental knowledge is legendary. He's devoted a lot of time to practicing his hand technique.
Another thing... The mix on Nil Rec. is probably the least good from PT (the semi-muddy drums being the main reason), making this version a much more listenable version!!!!! And the guitar solo really replaces well the violin solo on the record... STUNNING MOMENT of a STUNNING SONG!
7/8 time signature with his left hand (snare) and right foot (kick) and a 6/8 (or 12/8 if you want) with his right hand on the ride bell.
I paid 80 quid for Roger Waters' The Wall show and those were some of the best spent money of my life
how about Peart, Portnoy etc? Are they a bit too 'to the book' in terms of style? I love Harrison...he's quite jazz influenced, in my layman's term of way of hearing/seeing things in a musical way!
then the guitar goes in open chords and the bass (as well as the snare) changes from 7/8 to 6/8 (or 12/8) following what the guitar does, giving a completely different feeling and ultimately a big smile on Colin's face LOL
Ah, right...that makes sense to me. Who's your favourite drummer?
I spent £100 going to see Bon Jovi, best ever
Although i love PT and Tool as well, DT´s time signatures are at another level, i agree they might abuse from time to time which leds people to feel they´re "forcing" time signatures. Any way is not like these two aforementioned bands can play like Dream Theater, only the drummers can.
