      I really love how at first, with just a look, he's able to convey both relief at the ring not being in the Shire and regret, that he hasn't actually found the One Ring. Then just as quickly it changes when Frodo says wait, and his face becomes darkly hopeful, both dread and hope that he might have been right. All with just expressions

      Real. Cause his face in these two seconds is an entire character arc. He thought this was a Lesser Ring, so he is relieved, then upon hearing Frodo saying "wait", he is first suprised, because... What are the chances of it being the One Ring, right? They were were astronomically small in his mind. Like WHAT THE HELL? The Hobbits have had the One Ring all these years? Then you can see his mind click! FUCK! Gollum was the lead and his account actually makes sesne, so he isn't the only one in the know, followed by a sliver of anger probably directed at himself for not figuring it out when Biblo filled up the "One Ring" bingo card in front of him some time ago, where he could have prevented this, realizing that he DID NOT in fact prevent the events that are about to transpire, and then immidiately his face turns to utter despair because he realizes that the Ring being found means that the Dark Lord is back... HOLY SHIT!

    • @Surprise_Inspection
      @Surprise_Inspection 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@TheThOdOr1sIn Gandafs mind, the chances that Bilbo's ring was the one, were only astronomically small 60 decades ago, when bilbo first found it. You forget that up until that point, Gandalf had been searching for lore on the ring, for 17 years straight. The records of Isildur, even in the movie, suggest that Isildur used to play with the ring to find it's secrets, like putting it into fire. But after awhile it's hold over him became stronger, and he could no longer even risk putting it in a fire that had no chances of destroying it.

    What blows my mind is that in the actual books…from the time Gandalf leaves the shire to go investigate the history of the ring after Bilbos birthday party…17 YEARS PASS. It’s literally 17 years before he shows back up to the shire, finding Frodo (who is 50 years old already at this point) and tells him it is indeed the one ring and it must be destroyed and the journey begins from there. But I always loved how Tolkien had very realistic views on time and space in his world. Gandalf is an immortal being, so 17 years is literally like a week to him, and tracing the History of the ring that is thousands upon thousands of years old and had changed hands and been lost multiple times…finally he comes to the clue that fire will make writing appear upon the band. That’s when he journeys back to the shire. But it’s such a task that it takes him nearly 2 decades (and during this time he and aragorn actually captured Sméagol, Aragon takes him to the halls of king thranduil, Legolas father, the same dungeons we see in the hobbit movies…only for Sméagol to escape). So yea I always loved how Tolkien portrayed the MASSIVE amounts of time that passed between major events in his story. Obviously for a 3 hour film Jackson had to make it seem like Gandalf was only gone for a few weeks or so and came right back, which works better for the film obviously but nothing beats the books.

    • @NebulaMXC
      @NebulaMXC 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      This is especially interesting due to the fact that because it was indeed the One Ring, it explains why Frodo still appears as he did when he was 33 when he is 50; The Ring had stopped his aging like it did with Bilbo, adding to the effect of it seeming like only a few weeks had passed between Gandalf's visits to the Shire.

    • @TheGrillCheeseFanatic
      @TheGrillCheeseFanatic 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes. There's the slower ageing process granted to Frodo by the One Ring. But also, Hobbits have a rather impressive lifespan, even when compared to normal men like us. They can easily live up to a hundred years old and in some cases, even more (the Old Took himself lived up to 130 Years, and Bilbo Baggins up to 131 Years, and those two set the all time longevity record). If we take into consideration the length of such a lifespan age, fifty years old for Bilbo or any other Hobbit can be seen as the real world's thirty years old. To top it all, Hobbits are heavy pipe smokers and ale drinkers, and yet they outlive us by an average lifespan of at least twenty five years more.

      Sauron never died, not even when he was defeated by Isildur. He was fully capable of existing without a corporeal body since he was a Maia. Besides, his life force was bound to the Ring; that’s why the destruction of the Ring meant his own destruction. And in the books, he does NOT take the form of a flaming eye; the eye is more metaphorical. It is implied that he did create a new body for himself within Barad-dur.

One guy to express it. One guy to deliver it all and in the fandom bind them. And that was Sir Ian McKellen. They KNEW they didn’t have a dime for Brad Pitt as Aragorn or some shit. They knew they needed someone to deliver what seemed a whole heap of bullshit to sell the idea of a ring being the face of evil, a threat big enough for all of the races of middle-earth to come together to defeat.

    That line gives me chills. Just imagine this potent power, this dark ruler that is seen as the ultimate evil with immense power. You’re told he is diverting ALL HIS POWER and thought onto this small item you hold in your hand. He’s coming for it and the only thing you can do is hide it and keep ahead of him the best you can…

    I always used to wonder why the Ring reacts when Frodo claims that Sauron was destroyed.
    I believe it has to do with who Sauron is at his core. A being who delights in spreading despair to others. By doing so demonstrating his cunning and power. In that moment he calls out. Revealing to Frodo that what he just said is truly false, crushing whatever notion that he is dead on the spot. He feels no need to hide, given Gandalf is going to tell Frodo anyways. More than that, he calls out to Gandalf. Playing against Gandalf's clear struggle to resist the ring. Which of course causes it's own form of despair. It is multilayered, to Frodo it is just a specter whispering in his ear. To Gandalf it is the ring of power tempting him. It carries different meanings to both, and most of it is lost on Frodo. However that too, I feel Sauron delighted in...

    The visible look of relief to dissapointment on Gandalf’s face when Frodo tells him first about seeing nothing to seeing the engravings on the Ring really tells you how much he didn’t want it to be THE One Ring. Not out of denial, but he genuinely didn’t want Frodo, Bilbo, or The Shire, in general, personally wrapped up in the whole history with Sauron. It’s an empathetic side of Gandalf’s character that I truly love.

    It's not the Ring that scares him, it's what it can and will do to him. Even the purest soul can be corrupted by this foul, evil thing. Good becomes evil, generosity becomes greed, kindness becomes selfishness and in the hands of one as powerful and well-intentioned as Gandalf.........well, it would be like Yoda as a Sith Lord.

With a perfectly smooth ring this would have been the greatest movie of all time but with that smudge, don't get me wrong it's still a great movie, but it demotes it a little to the level of Road House, or Sharknado
