They started to replace the SA80 with the Knight’s Armament KS-1 rifle. The special forces regiments will get it first, then gradually will be the standard service rifle in the future.
@@awsysumer3814incorrect, it’s only for the ranger regiment and select few from the Royal Marines, the actually army won’t be trusted with a £900 rifle for every man, more than likely going to be the HK416
The war in Ukraine has accelerated the development of weapons and survival technology at a rate unheard of in normal peacetime. The Ukrainians and the Israelis are the most experienced armies at present. We are learning what works and what doesn't.For instance the Challenger 2 's tracks struggle in the soft soil of Ukraine whereas the Russian -built tanks's metal tracks perform better in mud. Let's hope the Western armies learn the lessons and develop answers
Seems silly to replace the SA80 until a new caliber is standardised (6.8?).. Then again France just bought a pile of 416's which are 5.56.. in which case you'd think it be simplest to keep the SA80 going until the next gen cartridge landscape is a bit more material.
How much does it cost and where do the components come from? Are they EMP proof? How long does the battery last? Do we have the spares and expertise to fix them in the field? What is plan B if the sight fails ? I am sure it is wonderful when it is working ….

What’s the battery life and logistics chain? How robust is it when a squaddie tries to change the battery in a wet muddy trench and it gets dirty? Lol project “uppem”.
This is old tech and already there are many products on the open market similar to this for anyone to buy. There is no advantage to be had apart from willingness of our forces to buy them. Chinese still have the quality and monopoly on thermal tech
the only potential issue with this is targets dont tend to have thermal capability`s, e.g they dont give of a heat signature like a human does so a thermal target will probably need developing
Ah Active IR - so now you are giving your position away, excellent. There's a reason why AFVs went away from Active IR is what the 1960s. Another add for something not in service.
Yeah this isn't an active IR illuminator from the 60s.... It's a "thermal" passive IR camera that projects what looks like an edge-detection image up into an optical sight. No one is running around a field with active IR (laser or illuminator) these days, though use indoors is still sensible if additional illumination is required.
Aye. Gleamin. So in twelve years as I finish my service the first batch might just arrive. Until then we will continue to use the cheapest stuff going because we dont have the money for kit that might give soldiers a fighting chance.
You see the cqb stuff coming out of Ukraine and this kind of capability is absolutely needed. Great looking kit.
Project upham, named because " They don't like it up em, Captain Manwaring".
Wasn't Upham in SPR ? Not a good analogy perhaps.
Charles Upham VC and bar, I would assume.
Stupid boy, Pike
I'd like to volunteer for Project Upham!
The uk at present couldn't protect a holiday resort never mind ww3.😊😊🇬🇧✈️😍
Now that’s a rifle for 2025 now we’re talking Black ops two style
I know right!
all we need now is bo2 to come back XD
God Bless The British Army.
So about 20 years from now some might get one. Nice.
Thank you. Interesting and highly practical kit, provided that it survives long term soldier testing and climatic tests.
A soldier is bound to eat one.
How about replacing the SA80?
The MOD is looking into that, under Project Grayburn 😊

I swear the defense industry is just turning into “let’s make that thing from call of duty”😭
not really, where do you think call of duty gets the idea?
The problem is having a sight system that is more expensive than the actual rifles we have
I think that’s going to be the way for everyone now.
But the Marines , the Rifles and Paras are getting new rifles and suppressors
What's the problem?
@@DillWhiteWater the british military is broke thats why
Why in this day and age does quality night vision and IR cost so much?
Does the camera light up like a Christmas tree through NVs though?
Why would it?
Wtf are you talking about lmao? Cameras don't light up through NODs at all lmao
Nice. Hopefully this will come in to service in time for Project Grayburn 🙂
It is useful now that we are no longer fighting in any wars 😂😂
Video on Project Grayburn please!!
There's a news article that came out 2 weeks ago. Basically, the MOD is still in the planning stage
BO2 Target finder irl

It reminds me of Ghost Recon Future Soldier's backscatter optic.
We are now in a video game irl.
Will be in service in 2058
Feels like something that'll work until it gets a bit of dirt in it
Light and optics is my favourite physics topic.
This is a potential game changer. Better optics means better situational awareness, which makes a big difference on the battlefield. 👍
Good bit of kit ,the British army won't buy it 😂
Straight out of a video game 15 years ago and it looks so cool but will every single British army solider get one ?
No. It's too big, expensive and fragile for general issue. It could be used in some scenarios but it won't be a replacement for the LDS.
About time ?
Might want to correct your description.

Looks like something from black ops 2😂🔥
How does it compare with XM-157 vortex?
Wonder if you guys gonna make your own gun again
0:25, that's an airsoft rifle XD.
Yes, because it's cheaper to get an Airsoft gun and put the sight on than an actual L85
So what’s replacing the SA80 ??
