      The combat in the old games was awful. It was far far too easy. It was always quicker and easier to fight a ton of enemies rather than sneak past them. If I was 50% blind and had one arm i could still beat every combat encounter without taking a single hit. It was so easy its boring. Unity however, did the combat perfectly. They shouldve kept that sort of combat system.

      This exactly. Shadows' narrative seems ideally designed for this kind of story. During the open-world questing, the NPC is off "questing" elsewhere. During the more linear segments, you can easily design it so that Naoe is picking off snipers from the wall, or Yasuke has challenged someone to a duel and is causing a scene to distract the guards, or either one is pretending to be a dignitary/servant to steal info while the player does their thing. It doesn't have to (always) be shown; just have the characters set it up, and have minor set changes based on who you play.

  • @skynet0912

    They could easily balance boss fights for Naoe by maybe still forcing you to fight in the open, but if you played as her in the mission leading up to the fight, you would be prompted to do optional stealth objectives to weaken the boss along the way, like destroying their armor so they take much more damage, poison their food so they start with reduced health or destroy their weapon so they don't do as much damage with a crappy replacement.
    Odyssey had a very simplistic version of it, where most region leaders were well hidden and protected at first, but as you chip away at objectives in that region, like burning supplies and taking out camps, their guards will gradually leave their side, and if you do enough for them to hit rock bottom, they might just sit on a rock in the open all alone! So you could fight 5 minibosses and an actual boss at the same time if you really wanted, but you could also erode that boss by doing side content, and it feels like it would fit Naoes playstyle so much, where Yasuke don't get the same objectives, but also don't really need to weaken the bosses first, as you are already plowing through guards anyway...

    • @davidbeer5015
      @davidbeer5015 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Numenorean921 Idk how Syndicate’s playtests were or how their attempts were executed. I’m no expert, for the record, I just heard that statement and thought of the frustration of climbing progress pretty much halting in BotW because it just decided it should rain right then, and it’s not much of a fault of skill. I think skill-based obstacles are fully fair, but to be skill-based, it also needs to be either telegraphed well enough (like you said, cracks in the wall to indicate breakable) or allow the player space within to be able to overcome it.
      Like I said, idk what they did for those players to test it. It could’ve simply been down to execution, not giving the players the proper info/time to overcome it, because that, as believable as the event could be, can feel terrible to fail as a result. So idk if such a thing can be successfully made random and feel satisfying, at least not for me.

    In the end, Yasuke really is killing the game. If the rumors are true, the initial idea was to have a Japanese man instead of him, which could mean that Shadows just had a sex choice like past ACs. But because you cannot do that with Yasuke, now you have 2 characters that you weirdly swap at almost any moment and the one you are not using takes a sit?
    And because one of the few historical facts we know about Yasuke is that he was very tall, they decided to make him combat focused, which sounds fine initially, but Naoe can algo do that and even more, so there aren't many reasons to play as him.
    This would have worked better with just Naoe or choosing between playing a man or a woman with the same abilities.

    If they wanted a smoother dual-protagonist system, they could have considered a Skyrim-style companion system. You’d travel with two characters and seamlessly switch between them with a button press, like GTA 5. While you control one, the other could act independently-following commands like "stay here," "distract those guards," or "fight here." The AI could also avoid breaking stealth or getting in your way unless called over.
    This could have also extended to the recruiting system, letting you choose a recruit with unique abilities to be your companion during exploration. If you eventually want someone else, you’d return to the hideout to swap them. It would make character-switching more fluid, strategic, and fun.

    Honestly I think they should have done the Syndicate route with the protagonist swap. Give each of them bespoke and parallel and intertwining stories that will combine into the full narrative, withe ach story having checkpoints related to how far you get in the other, more or less. Either that, or in those missions where they are in the same place at the same time, like the castle assault mentioned, that there's a provision for a seamless character swap, similar to what Dynasty Warriors has allowed since they allowed you to bring two characters into battle and hot-swap between them as you wished. Mind, this is something that would be best permitted ONLY for arena type events (boss fights really) and not as a general mechanic.

At least that would explain why they’re not together at the final room.

  • @zhivik
    @zhivik 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    What puzzles me the most is why Ubisoft didn't use the good example they themselves set in AC: Syndicate. At the end of the game, there is a mission where both Evie and Jacob participate, infiltrating the Buckingham Palace, if I remember correctly. What they did was to switch between each character, making them infiltrate each in their own way, using their advantages, and working together towards a common goal. It felt logical and realistic. This switching between characters in the middle of a mission is indeed bizarre. I would expect there to be missions that force you to play with either one of the protagonists, but it appears the answer is no.
    The worst thing would be if gameplay is designed around switching characters mid-mission, like having boss fights that are incredibly hard with Naoe, but a piece of cake with Yasuke. Yet, I feel this will be exactly the case, which means it will be impossible to fix post-launch. If that is the case, it would make everyone wonder why they had to make two characters in the first place. If anything, it shows the expanding gap between developers and gamers, it's like developers don't really know what makes a game fun any more.

    Japanese armor is designed to mainly protect the wearer from slashing based attacks, and arrows, and not much from thrusting attacks, while allowing the user to still be mobile. You can easily thrust through traditional Japanese armor with any competently made katana or similar weapon, so the argument that it doesn't make sense to assassinate someone in armor doesn't actually hold up and that's not even taking into account of "how" O-Yorio armor is placed. With an upward thrust, a katana will essentially bypass the armor because it has an overlapping design placement so as not to restrict mobility.
    In contrast, early European plate armor is designed to protect from a wide variety of weapons, including thrusting attacks, arrows, slashing attacks and bludgeon based weapons, and this versatility comes at the cost of mobility.
    Assassinate should always be a one shot, especially from someone of the Assassins Brotherhood and with the element of surprise.

    What you mentioned about accessibility is really a huge problem with UBI gameplay design in general. I honestly think this design feature hinders player’s engagement and immersion waaay more than it’s worth the ‘convenience’.
    It’s like they get so afraid of people complaining about something that they backtrack and overcorrect the feature to the point that it’s just a gimmick rather than engaging. Like the idea of taking away the bird so people can do their own prepping and scouting, that’s cool, lean more into THAT by making npcs maybe talk about stuff or design areas where the clues they give to find a place or someone can be done in game. But UBI get scared and introduce scouts, which is basically the bird but with more steps and actually less engaging because now you have to go into a map to do it rather than in game. This is what I mean by over correcting!
    Also we are already in menus too much in these RPG games! Tinker with gear, menu, find a location, menu, upgrade anything, menu, different vendors, menu and now scouts is just another menu feature. It’s too much man ! Why aren’t vendors like the food vendor in a restaurant or inn you can walk into? All vendors just stand outside and lead you to a generic menu that looks like every other menu, even for gear.
    Im I’m very happy with the new stealth difficulty that doesn’t just make guards spot you faster, but makes them smarter. I like that they look up, hear better, pursue longer and are just generally more dynamic. But then UBI don’t make that the default in design or also don’t heavily market it, so people will think it’s just same old.
    I appreciate not being able to one hit assassinate guards who are meant to be highly skilled (not leveled). I don’t like that arbitrary levels play a role, but I do like the idea of skill, where some enemies can’t be assassinated from the front if they see you coming. I think they should market all these features way more and go into detail as to how they work, rather than marketing the normal stuff. I’m surprised not many of the previews even mentioned it.

    They literally implemented the AC Brotherhood system where you can call on other assassins to assist you. If they replaced the random hires with simply the other main character, it would make the dual protagonist system so much better. In other words, whenever you play as Naoe, you can call on Yasuke to help you take down enemies. Either that, or simply have the other protagonist go in separately and be taken over by AI, and there could be a button that would allow you to switch between controlling wither one on the fly. It's just so bizarre to me for them to offer 2 protagonists like Syndicate, but implement it so weirdly.

  • @Im_Blitz
    @Im_Blitz 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I think the visual detection setting you mentioned in your AC Shadows review video would be a good default setting, instead of it being an option to make the game "more difficult." You mentioned it drastically increases the perception of the guards and their behavior, so in 1 way, perching in the middle of the open in broad daylight on a rooftop stalking all the guards wouldn't work because the vertical perception of the guards would be improved and instead of just looking horizontally, they'd look around like an actual person and see the large body mass that's just 15 feet in the air, staring back at them.
    This in turn might force players to take better advantage of all the new systems or tools, such as the lighting that's being discussed.
    In the same way one-hit assassinations across the board might not be the best setting by default for this game, enemy detection being dumbed down might not do the game justice since it will open players up to simply sticking to their comfort zones that they've used throughout the series and keep things simple, ignoring new features...rather than taking advantage of them and experiencing everything new the game has to offer.
    Simply put, force players to experience new features, or what's the point? It's a recurring theme now with what we've seen of AC Shadows. "We have this, but you don't need to use it." Same thing with, oh...I don't know...one of the main protagonists? Yasuke is pointless. He's been successfully written out of the gameplay by making him entirely optional and inconvenient.
    I really want this game to succeed, but the game is so scared of itself.

    When it comes to the whole "invisible walls in the assassination missions" thing, I wouldn't be surprised if this was an issue that stemmed from the fact that the dev team is inexperienced. Ubisoft said themselves that a majority of the devs working on the game are so new that they've never been through a full cycle (meaning this is the first game they've ever made).
    If that is the case, I wouldn't be surprised if they put invisible walls up because the level designers and mission programmers are so inexperienced that they don't know how to work together to make good environments for these missions, so the mission programers just go in and make a linear pathway for the player because if they don't, the player wouldn't experience the designers intended experience which... is the wrong way to go about designing a game like this, i.e. an open world action RPG.
    Other games can get around this via world design, by creating a set pathway due to the world being designed around that path, but if the level designers have to put up invisible walls because the world designers didn't design the environment in such a way for them to make a tailored encounter... the level designers need to suck it up and just let players play the mission how they want. Imposing restrictions via invisible walls is probably the dumbest way they could have gone about this, because when you do that, the mission ceases to be a blackbox mission.
    33:35 This part you describe reminds me a lot of an experience I had playing DnD once. I was playing an Assassin-esque character and our DM allowed me to go off in a certain section and stealth my way up to a key character in a castle, and when I got to the room he was in I passed a stealth check that put me in the room with him completely unaware that I was there. I then proceeded to say, "I roll for initiative" thinking that I was going to have to fight him and the DM looked at me confused and was like, "I was gonna let you just killed him if you passed the check for a sneak attack but alright, you walk in and yell at the guy to square up, loosing the opportunity to sneak attack and now this is a combat encounter" and I felt so stupid. That's what this sounds like.

    I am still waiting for the full story of this game. I want to know if there will be a plot twist in the end of the game like "Yasuke: I really am not a Samurai, I was just a warrior tasked by Master Nobunaga to help him in his cause"

    The Fromsoft method of difficulty slider makes it so that if you beat the game on “easy mode” using summons, magic, Op weapons etc, you can replay the game and have an entirely new game with totally new mechanics to engage in that you had bypassed.

    I don’t understand why ING is harder on Shadows for rehashing some of the same mechanics from previous Assassin’s Creed games but when Spider-Man 2 rehashed just about everything from the previous games it was ok, or at least they were more forgiving.

      maybe because Spiderman has only 2 games, but AC has been the same since Origins, maybe they forgive it for that? A sequel set in the same universe, city and theme is probably bound to have more repetitive aspects

    AC Odyssey had the best systems still to this day. You could one shot every NPC in the game outside of bosses IF you just built assassin damage. The adrenaline to super amp your assassin damage was such an amazing system too. If you have adrenaline you could perform a mega assassin attempt and it one shot even mercenaries if fully built. All they had to do for Valhalla was keep the best parts of the RPG systems from Odyssey and it would have been the best AC game ever. Now there is no hope.

    2:05 I played The Witcher 3 for the first time when the PS5 version came out. I got the platinum in my first playthrough which means I played on Death March. I’ll be honest I never once used oils or potions at all for the entire playthrough. I only started using them when I was on the second DLC blood and wine. At that point I realized I should have been using that stuff during my first playthrough.

      I get it, but that seems like he'd just be a worse version of Naoe at that point. The whole deal with the split is that Yasuke is the heavy, Naoe is the assassin. He can't slip in and out of armor at will (it's immersion-breaking and VERY gamey), so what fun would you get out of playing him?
      I know what they were going for here, but I think they would've had a better time with a single protagonist who could switch between the two forms on a per-mission basis. But then you lose the "honorable samurai" fantasy, so... yeah.

    i think perhaps a better implementation would be if both characters were going to split up to complete different tasks at the same time and you get to decide who you follow and control, rather than the one person just waiting awkwardly

    14:20 timeframe, wholly agree. if you choose to do a main content mission, your choice should not be changeable during the mission. it can break immersion, especially if someone only plans on using Yasuke or only Naoe. hopefully they here how weird it is and change that, but doubtful.

    IGN breaking the narrative? Considering they didn’t even get the historical accuracy with how Nobunaga was like a hero to the common peasants at the time. I’m not expecting a respectable game in any aspect. Sakura trees and other “Le anime plants” off season, levels in an assassins creed game, and illegal use of Japanese protected and trademarked items and religious artifacts. The lack of attention to detail is at every layer of the game before you even get to clickbait topics 20:24 Himeji castle is absolutely stunning btw, I think photos aren’t allowed of the interior of the top floor due to how religious artifacts are in Japan but I recommend going to Himeji and visiting the castle. Maybe Taiyo Park there if you have to time as well. (You know how in Islam they don’t allow depictions of Mohammad? They have a similar rule with religious artifacts in Japan that’s why you won’t see a lot of detailed stuff of what’s inside shrines.)
