  • This top secret spy radio copy, is being built in a remote location. It is as close to the original as possible with many parts being remanufactured as they were in the 1940s. The single figure production run means only will reach the UK and be operated by Peter G3OJV. Another will go to France in memory of the agents who operated behind enemy lines. This Video gives some details of the construction of this special reproduction radio.

The Paraset was a dangerous tool in france and holland, because the german police "Funkabwehr" catched them all. The 0v1 receiver was the problem and was detected by the "Funkabwehr". So the Paraset find only use in Norway, were the german activity to find them was very low.

Greetings from Texas, Mr Peter, ... I so enjoyed this video. I am 84yr old and remember the tubes (valves) that you describe. I grew up in my father's radio repair shop located in the midwest of the United States, (MO). Dad taught me how to service superheterodyne home receivers as I grew up. This led me into Amateur Radio - some 64 years ago - wish I could say that I had contributed to the hobby as much as you have. Amateur Radio is my life now, along with my current family. Thank you so much for what you do!

Looking forward to seeing your build. I too am in the midst of building a Paraset however, I am build the “TT” type - a transistor based Paraset. It will still look the part but will work on 12v only. Very excited - 73 M7MXE

The book "Jackdaws" by Ken Follett has some great plot points revolving around radios. I wonder if they were using a Paraset.

If you want your own special version but all SState the 4SqRP group in the US do limited runs of Bayou jumper I think they call it. It's a 4 W out with only two mosfets (the power oscilaltor is a BS 170) Format - 40mtr locked frequency Tx and a regenerative receiver. 4W CW will indeed cross the Atlantic if the wind is blowing hard but the Rx really isn't up to it. Anyway it is or was available as a kit or order of 120 USD approx.

Hi, this "basket" spy radio brings in to my mind the movie "Eye of the Needle", where Donald Sutherland operates with it in the park. 73', oh1nzu

Hi… I was thinking the same. I wondered though how he transmitted when he was on the river fishing, just before the local Bobby came across him. I’ll have to watch the film again, I have the DVD.73.

Hi Peter - Love your programs! Along the lines of your program, there was an article titled, "Intercept!", in 73 Magazine, Oct 1985, pg 36-ff, about a WWII OSS officer and a new-fangled Joan-Eleanor UHF set. He flew in the tail of a De Havilland Mosquito at 30,000 feet, in an unpressurized cabin. His mission was to communicate via CW with a member of the Dutch underground. The magazine issue is available here: www.worldradiohistory.com/Archive-DX/73-magazine/73-magazine-1985/73-magazine-10-october-1985.pdf.
My first transmitter, ARS WN4CCA, was 6L6 based. The schematic is available here: w5dxs.tripod.com/6L6.htm.
My favorite spy radio is a direct conversion model based on the NE602 chip. I mounted the components and batteries in a wooden cigar box. I still have it, some 30+ years later. It works great.
    73,
    Jim KX4TD

In those days, a long wire antenna on a house, would have been as common as TV antennas became. Also, the UK end would have a much better setup.

So... Will this be manufactured as a kit for sale? Or just a one-off for your usage? The 4 State QRP club over here in the colonies produces a kit that "emulates" the Paraset...

As I said in the Video, a single figure production run. No idea where the other few will find their homes.

Many of the components you are using are not identical to the original, the rotary switches for instance are miniature Japanese, the capacitors are modern mylar and polyester, the ceramic tuning capacitors are late 60s. These parts were never used during the war. It is easily possible to replicate this better by using period parts from old domestic radios of that era. Yaxley switches and wax filled paper capacitors could easily replace these modern components and increase the realism hugely. I guess if they are out of sight, they are indeed out of mind. Pity though, with the effort you have gone to.

    • @watersstanton
      @watersstanton  หลายเดือนก่อน

Nobody in their right mind would use 80 year old capacitors, unless of course the radio was for show only!

@@watersstanton Why? If they test ok, its no different than using a 80 year old 6V6, or an 80 year old resistor or an 80 year old phone jack.
