    SullenTV and Eternal Ink present "Under the Skin" with Jack Rudy of Good Time Charlies Tattooland in Anaheim , CA, Jack Rudy is an American tattoo artist notable for his reinvention of the 'Black and Gray' style of tattooing, realistic portraits, and single-needle use. He is considered to be one of the top tattoo artists in the world.
    After leaving the Marines in 1975, Rudy began his career as an apprentice at Goodtime Charlie's Tattooland, in East Los Angeles. Under the watch of Charlie Cartwright, a friend of his he had met while visiting the Old Long Beach pike while on leave from the USMC Logistics Base in Barstow CA, Rudy and Cartwright began to hone their craft of single-needle, Black and Gray style tattoos. Simultaneously creating a whole new sub genre of modern tattooing and raising the proverbial bar for many new emerging tattoo artists and artists in general. His very distinct and distinguishable style is renowned for its masterful use of light and dark shades of varying degrees of black and grey. In addition to creating a softer and more realistic style of tattooing with the advent of the new single needle tattoo technology artists where now able to use a much greater level of detail than previously attainable utilizing older and more readily accepted tattoo machine and needle configurations. As the client base of East Los Angeles began requesting this 'penitentiary-style', the pair decided to create a single-needle configured tattoo machine.

    People seem to be confusing ego with opinion. With almost 40 years in the craft (Along with with being a living legend) I'm pretty sure that JACK FUCKING RUDY should have a say on the ''new age of tattooing''.Also shaky lines? I've never seen cleaner work done with a single needle, also Jack's style remains unique and nearly impossible to replicate to this day. Goes to show that most of these haters have probably never even held a real tattoo machine .

    What I like about this new tattoo age is that the art gets to come out in sociaty, The modern art has been taken over by a-holes that make a square on a wall and talk about saying it's art, and they pushed the real artists aside. So therefore we go to tattoing and gaming and loads of other mediums, but what is great about that, is that the rest of sociaty gets to see the art. I love this age of tattooing, even tho the competition is hard.

    I don't know the "who's who" of tattooing, but I do appreciate the artist and their craft for sure. I have never meet this man, but growing up in LA/OC area I've heard of him (and I don't even have tattoos) I like him in this interview though, he reminds me of my uncle or something. And I think what can be mistaken for "ego" or whatever... seems to me to be just an old school guy doing his thing and speaking his mind.

    Jack keeps complaining about tattooing being too mainstream but what he fails to realize is that if tattooing wasn't as mainstream as it is then he would not be making the money he is today and he would still be operating out of that small backstreet shop making peanuts

    First of all, this is quite possibly the best single needle work ive seen documented(check out the timelapse video). Secondly, why is no one absolutely shitting on the fact that he is self taught and started without an apprenticeship? Because it doesnt matter that's why. This man deserves an ego. People out there who got poor excuses for apprenticeships bashing self teachers dont.

    • @dudeguy3945
      @dudeguy3945 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      bluhhoundgucci for real man. There are quite a few amazing artists who were self taught and no apprenticeship. Look at Steve Butcher and Timmy B. Also Cory Miller got his start by tattooing out of his house. I think what it is, is that all the tattoo artists just don't want the competition so they bash anyone who is self taught and claim they can't make it anywhere in the industry without apprenticeship. They will make every excuse as to why its not safe to tattoo at home. Which somethings you do need to learn on the sanitizarion side of things. But its not that hard to learn this stuff. Its mostly pretty simple things. Like I said, its all just a bunch of shit And these guys don't want someone who is self taught doing better work than they can and for better prices.

    I laugh! His line work is shaky, his attitude towards the new tattooing industry is silly. Why would you not want tattoos to be excepted? Don't you like to pay your bills? I am personally glad the old ways and old timers are going away! Enjoyed the video regardless!
