Herb is a national treasure.
“Great Amps are designed on napkins” should be a bumper sticker or t-shirt.
Glass Audio magazine, Volume 7 Number 3. It changed my audio life. The cover said "Single Ended Glory for Under $100". The article had plans for a single ended stereo amplifier using the 45 power tube. The secret for the low price was that it used Sansui output transformers that were push pull. The designer, Eric Barbour, claimed that the power output was so low that the transformer did not need to be expensive single ended type. After thinking about it for a few years, I finally decided what the heck and I built one.This was now 1998. It was my first electronic project, the plans consisted of a schematic and a parts list. I was so relieved when it didn't go up in a puff of smoke when I turned it on. It actually cost me $600 to build, I had no parts bin and I bought single ended transformers. It did not take very long to realize that this was the best amplifier I had ever heard. My amps at the time were Audio Research Classic 150 monoblocks, $10,000 for the pair back in 1989. This $600 home built amp was better. The power output of 2 watts would not power my electrostatic speakers so I began a long search for the perfect single ended speaker. I wound up modifying a pair of Altec theater horns, I had actually been to the theater they came out of. I still have the amp, it still works, and it is hooked up to my speakers right now. I have not lusted after the latest and greatest equipment for a long time now, and probably never will again.
I built the same amplifier nearly 25 years ago and some of my most moving hi-fi experiences were with that amp; what a glorious amp it was! It changed my audio life as well.

Herb's midwinter head covering and overcoat reminded me of walking from 38th St. all the way up 5th ave. one cold March day in 1959 to see the Guggenheim Museum. I was a young soldier stationed on Governor's Island in New York Harbor. As a graphic artist with a BA in Fine Arts, I was eager to see this monument, but I was chilled to the bone walking all that way in a cotton raincoat! Reichert's comment regarding the affinity of graphic artists with good music reminded me of good times back in my hometown in the Midwest wiring our own gear like HK Citation kits and listening to them over giant speaker systems of the day like the Electro-Voice Patricians. These analog puppies will make the average audiophile sit up and take notice and sell for thousands of dollars today in restored condition. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I learned of these many talented gentlemen through Joe Roberts’s publication Sound Practices, what a GREAT magazine. The articles are still relevant today, they’re definitely worth the effort to find and read, a couple of times. It’s about the emotional connection for many of us.

I get your sentiment but challenge the meat of it. I believe there are similar great discussions to be had concerning clock phase noise, isolation and TDA1541a vs latest and greatest chips. Not unlike the important discussion around simple triodes and impedance matching power supplies. Just a different portion of the audio chain. Same type of people having a constructive argument.
Thanks so much, Herb and Steve. A couple of my very good friends are “wizards”, and I really love them and am so thankful to have them in my life. I could honest to god listen to Herb talk about just about anything for as long as he’d be willing to keep speaking. Now, when do parts 3 - 10 come out? Thanks again, guys!
A few months ago I heard about Sound Practices from an Audiophilliac episode with Herb R. That same day I saw and purchased a complete set of the original magazines on eBay for $100. Reading them has been great. It's made the pandemic a little more palatable. Thanks Steve...without your channel none of this would've happened!

Late 90s...I buy a Pass Aleph 3 and read Nelson’s article on single ended class A. Taking cues from the article I modify my Moscode 600 biasing heavy into class A and running very little feedback. I heard magic, and subsequently bought a cheap Chinese 211 SET (Valve Audio Labs). That became a mainstay after a few upgrades and is still my reference, 20+ yrs later. Shortly after I got the VAL 211 I called Don Garber and discussed a build for a Fi X- with naked Vishay S102s and Solen caps instead of electrolytics. Picked up from Don in Brooklyn and found him to be a soft spoken and gracious person. He commented that the amp was remarkably transparent. I did enjoy it but unfortunately made a decision to sell it about 6 yrs ago and I do regret doing that.......Steve I enjoyed this episode as it connected me back to some inconic pieces in my past, made by some of the characters mentioned in your discussion with Herb. Thank you.
I have the late Don Garber's X4 amplifier (Type 46 Tube). A great piece. 1.5 watts....Sound Practices magazine, Edgarhorn Speakers...good times. Thank you Steve for this two part interview with Herb.

Great interview with Herb....the sad story of Fi breaks my heart....I remember going there and having to meat Don Garber and I was walking one day when I came across Fi one Sunday afternoon when they were close when I saw those beautiful SET amps....which I new nothing about.....I had to go back when there open to take a listen....that was it for me after Don let me hear one of those amps.....Im sorry I never bought one....was out of my price range....but I said to myself one day I will buy one....I bought from Don a modified Dyanco integrated amp which he mod and sounded great to me.....then time passed and I went buy the store and found out someone broke into the Fi shop....that was very sad....It was Don that made me to convert to low power amp which I bought in 2009 a SET 2a3 which was built for me....which I will not let go.....Don turn me on to the great jazz sax player Warne Marsh .....I was hooked....I never saw Don again after the shop was broken into....what a shame....I heard some great sounds there....I never saw Herb there....but maybe at the Gotham audio show in New York once a year around thanksgiving time.....anyway may Don rest in peace...those were beautiful memories....wow Steve was a great interview.....all the best.....Ed in Brooklyn......😏

Great Job Steve! So many memories triggered by this vid. I lived in NYC those early days and thanks to Art, Herb, and others, I got the "alternative fi" bug. Haunting Tower records for music and magazines like Sound practices only fed the addiction. I hung out downtown but somehow missed the Fi store. In spite of that by 94 I had one of Don's 2a3's, and shortly afterwards his Fi Y (still have it.) Also built my first and only tube preamp which is still thrown into my system from time to time.
One night I remember waking into a tiny 2 room gallery on east 5th or 6th st. In it was a single speaker the size of fridge (a klipsch I think) driven by a mono tube amp and a discman. I originally thought there was a live band in that room until I walked in. Later on I was also lucky enough to make it to NY Noise and meet, Don, Herb, and Blackie (Pagano) and listen to some insane gear. Good times!

Thanks Steve and Herb. This is oral history. That NY is long gone. As some one who lived there in the 80’s and lives there now I can say that the old NY allowed creatives like Herb to grow and he is still teaching us about audio and survival. Keep it coming!
O~M~G ... What a fantastic duo of episodes!
Part 1: I was introduced to Arthur Loesch at an audio get together a few years prior to his passing. Arthur asked me if I could make him an outboard tonearm mount for his turntable. I did, and in return he gave me 6DJ8 phono preamp and line stage PWB's that he'd designed years before. Arthur gave specific guidelines that the power supply was highly filtered but unregulated. With the help of two tube guru friends, the specifics of the power supply design were hashed out. Three weeks later I completed the build and visited Arthur with separate PS and preamp in hand for his assessment. It continues to be the front of my all tube stereo.
Part 2: I discovered Harvey 'Gizmo' Rothenstien through Listener Magazine. His story telling and experiences promoting low power tube amplification led me to build my 1st tube amplifier. A little 6BM8 two channel rig with a 6X4 rectifier that puts out 1.7 wpc. I contacted him about it and in response he asked how it made me feel. I said it made me feel more connected to the music's intentions. He exclaimed 'You're Done - Congratulations!'. I built this amp 20 years ago. Today it's feeding a pair of TQWT single driver 94 dB spl speakers.
Many many thanks to You and Herb for bringing insight to the memories of these fine gentlemen who literally started me on the path to tube nirvana.

I did a Google street view of 11 Watts Street, I see the location is now 'SOHO Cigar Bar', still an interesting location in lower Manhattan to set up Fi back in the day
Fi was at 30 Watts Street. It's now a restaurant called Mooncake Foods.

How did you get such good sound quality standing outside in New York? I didn't hear sirens, traffic, shouting or wind noise.
I loved it. Not only very interesting information about the history of all you guys involvement but so earthy and grounded, so to speak :). Maybe you guys should consider doing an interview event at night standing around an old oil drum with a fire going on in it. Just kidding guys it’s all great. Thanks for doing it all.
