It's not fan service if no-one liked it. In fact, the borderline hentai element was so poorly received (Japan included) that it was dropped entirely for the second year of Kiss Players.
This would have been perfect for an anime reboot of Japanese G1, doing their own thing, calling Optimus Prime "Convoy" and the Decepticons "Destrons" again.

And hey, my Plan is to use the first opening (Off Vocal) as alarm for my Phone so it can wake me up. (That's the reason I wished it) Since there is Background singing with "wake up", it fits nicely. 👌😉

After Kiss Players, Takara learnt nothing and decided to add similarly dodgy comics, included with their "Legends" (AKA "Titans Return") line of toys, which, although had a "15+" disclaimer (in TINY writing) on the boxes, were sold didn't next to TFs assumed at little kids in Japanese toy shops (and of the Japanese toy shop staff I asked, none one they were not aimed at kids and would probably still sell them to kids).
It's a series that set after the first movie in the Japanese G1 canon. The reasons why a lot of people hate it...well the manga is borderline loli porn( the main characters are adults btw), the radio show the first half is pretty much the same as the manga and this is probably the main reason hardcore fans hate them is that the Kiss Player team is important to the Japanese G1 canon and they rather forget about it but can't because how crucial the Kiss Players are in the canon. This one reason how important they are: they make Primus canon in the G1 cartoon canon.
I admit, this was a great cover, but I *HATE* the Kiss Players crossover manga with every fiber of my being and every TF fan should close it away in a vault so NO ONE can ever see it again especially possible newcomers to the Transformers franchise
