    Professional acoustician here with a tip that might be helpful. If you are trying to identify which pipes connect to which pipes and you cant see the whole pipe run, you can use a tuning fork. Excite the fork and place the base on the pipe you're interested in. That pipe will ring and it helps figure out what is connects to what in another room. It's also nerdy fun! 😂

    We had a home in Maine with the same heating challenges. Here's a thought. Where you are intending to pull off plaster and lathe on the walls, you can 'create' a chase-way for Pex tubing between studs. Since the tubing is so narrow it fits without issue. Just be sure to insulate the chase-way.

This is a very realistic look at what it takes to do renovations as a couple where you are DIY’ing everything and learning as you go. My husband and I did the same kind of stuff at your age (without the acrobatics) but we were … get this … renters for most of that time. When we finally bought our own place it was brand new, but we went nuts doing renovations anyway. Good times. Hang in there. I love watching your videos. It shows the REALITY of buying and fixing a house just to get it up to the “livable” standard.
    I’m a former realtor, and while people THINK they want a fixer upper, they really only want COSMETIC fixes. I have done what you are doing, and am currently helping my kids with their houses. Every single thing you learn (from unwanted lessons via “okay we fixed this, but now this is a problem…”) will build confidence. By the end? You will say “I could do this again!”, but really you’ll just want to spend time in the beautiful home you’ve created for yourselves. The Reno bug will hit you shortly after you settle in though…😂
    Keep the videos coming. You’re doing fantastic!

Could you build enclosures around the pipes, leaving them on the external walls and then maybe create a sort of architectural design of the enclosures like nooks, books shelves or columns between where a bed would go. You could also use these enclosures to run wiring for wall lights and extra plugs. A nook between two columns (one might be just for aesthetic balance) could maybe have a little table, dresser or chair with a mirror or picture above.

    The more time taken to discuss, to map out, and inspect various routes, the better plans are created. Rushing through almost inevitably creates more problems.
    Good, the leak is located. That should keep the city and you both happier about water consumption and conservation.
    Cannelle is truly enjoying winter snows. I wonder how she would react being forced to wear boots, my Sheltie cross was definitely not pleased until he went out and didn't have cold paws he had to lick to warm up.

    Hello from PEI. Yup it is cold here. I got from a thrift store, moving and bed blankets. I got curtain rings that had a clippy thing on them to attach the blankets. I got rods from dollarama and put them up on the windows and some doors. It sure helps with the drafts.
    This is our first winter with having rats and mice in the house. Gross! Ordinary traps didn’t work so we got the sticky traps. No more creatures. I suggest that you put traps up the attic and between the floor spaces, but remember where they are to remove should you capture creatures.
    Love the dog rolling. Our dogs like the snow too.

    Im interested in what you're accomplishing as our house has hot water heat with radiators and pipes going up in the rooms.
    I hope you plan to insulate your new pipeline if it travels up through the outside walls 😮
    (im watching incase we ever have to replace our system. Hopefully not!! But a good thing to know. 😬)
    Thank you for your videos, I enjoy ppl saving older homes. They were built with real wood that can be repaired ❤

  • @lisakilmer2667
    @lisakilmer2667 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    What a challenge. I had forgotten that old radiators each need an in and out/back to the basement pipes. Our baseboard radiators were installed in about 1970 and use one loop around each floor, and it was done pretty well so we still use the system. The only problem is that on the ground floor, the pipes drop down to the crawl space on their circuit, which become open highways for mice. (Yes, we've used steel wool, but it isn't permanent.)

    Getting double glazed windows and a ventilation system was a total game changer for us, we went from windows literally dripping with condensation to nothing it's fantastic.
    We do live in Aotearoa New Zealand though so our winters are cold and wet but no snow

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      So if we assume that you replaced your windows with vinyl (a bit of an assumption, I admit, but since that's what most people do, it's not that big of a stretch), then what I'm hearing is that you switched from repairable-but-unmaintained sustainable wood windows to unrepairable and ecologically-unfriendly vinyl windows that will end up in the landfill in 15-20 years when they fail and can't be repaired. A decision that is many people make, and that's perfectly valid, but one that I personally will not be making over here.

    2nd floor piping comundrum: you could run the heating loop under the floor of the hall/corridor/landing on the 2nd floor, and put the water based skrting board heaters on the other side of the wall in each room.

    Great editing, Shannon! Love what you did during the room calculation section. I'm a bit envious of your windows, wishing I had some lovely big windows to look out of here. We're planning on some renovations of our own, hopefully this coming summer if things don't go completely sour here in the states, which would give us a few nice large windows in the main living area. I'm definitely going to do my homework before we purchase anything! Thanks for more fun Corgi content! As always, she is adorable to watch!
