- How to Attach a Skeg to a Packraft or Inflatable Kayak -
Recently I bought a Biluta Packraft. Packrafts are notorious for being bad at tracking. My friend Raffle Ticket suggested I attach a Gumotex Skeg as the mounting will simply roll up with the boat.

Thanks for this post. Looking at attaching one to my expedition packraft. Could it used one when i packrafted the Yukon in 2018. I want to the for 2025 when i packraft the Murray River.
On a recent whitewater trip on the river Lune (the flamingo video) I used that craft on day 2. We ground out a lot and that mount (without the skeg in) took some hammer and came away scuffed but still attached 👍😁
This video was very helpful, one that I've been waiting for. But a question: The packrafts that come from the manufacturers with the skeg attachment already installed all have it mounted further back towards the stern, with most being completely on the stern tube, or mostly all on the tube, with very little attached to the floor itself. Is there a reason that you decided to mount it entirely on the floor? Thanks.
I hadn't noticed that about other Packrafts and skeg locations. I opted for the floor purely based on where it tend to be positioned on an inflatable kayak.
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner Thanks for getting back to me. From your test paddle, it seemed to work well. I purchased two skegs and mounting patches from Gumotex about 2 years ago, one for a packraft, one for a kayak, but have been too afraid to try attaching them, thinking that I might get them aligned improperly and screw-up everything! Your video has given me the confidence to give it a try. Thanks for your great videos!
Yeah in all honesty, alignment was my biggest concern and I had no idea how I was going to do that! The tape measure idea wasn't perfect, but it did the job! Let me know how you get on :)
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner Probably won't attempt it until Spring of 2023, as I don't use the inflatables when it gets cool or cold. Let us know if you do a more extensive test with the skeg. Thanks!

Nice one mate. So I see an electric motor in your future 👍👍 Quick TIP. Not for you as you did a great job. But if you rub a bit of vaserlean on the areas you don't want any glue to stick to,will stop any unnecessary headaches if the glue runs.

There are detailed instructions on gluing patches on urethane / PVC / vinyl, I would not give this technique more than six months before it simply falls off. If you do not correctly prep the surfaces ( both surfaces) there is no amount of extra glue that keep if from falling off.
It was attached according to the instructions, and considering this craft has since been used on whitewater, where the boat ground out a lot, scuffing and scraping this mount, and it's still fully attached, I'd have to question your point!
You added skeg exactly where is rotation point, I think is not good idea. Skeg should be at the end on your packraft
In hindsight you might be right 👍
I can always add another mount further back.
I have attached a skeg from Anfibo at the Stern of an itiwit 100 packraft and it works well. Enabling me to make abt. 4km per hour with this short and wide boat. Regards from your german follower Mathias
