All these statements in BG are for spiritual growth... but about the materialistic world or materialistic life
This comes in karma yoga section -- Eckhart Tolle explained this beautifully in "The Power of Now" book (also in audio format)
While doing any mechanical task we should intensely focus on what we do. When intensity is very high we gradually reach the stage of becoming 100% aware of every sense object experience like seeing something, hearing or smelling or tasting or touching. At this stage, thoughts become almost zero.
Thoughts occupy majority of mind space. When thoughts are minimum, it means the tendencies or samskaras in unconscious memory aren't getting a chance to convert into thoughts and enter the mind. We can imagine these are mobile phone notifications, which come on their own (impulsive thoughts) but not controlled by the mobile phone user (the mind)
So gradually the tendencies become weaker and they vanish. When tendencies become very less, thoughts become less, especially the thoughts that are responsible for anger, jealousy, anxiety, fear, etc
Thus mind become silent and in such a state the pure consciousness that enables mind to have experiences in the first place provides all the good fruits to the mind -- like deep peace, intense love, intuition, ability to browse unconscious memory, etc
Such fruits are impossible to human mind on it's own
This is the deep meaning of karma yoga spoken by Krishna in BG
