    I have always ran my hpf at 120hz pulls all the bass out and makes the vocals crisp and clear. When I ran 8’s or 10’s I ran the lpf at 80hz I run 12’s and 15’s I run my lpf as low as 40hz but I’ve always had the box at 30hz tuned. I’ve been sober for about 3 years and you see anymore in this industry the bass has helped us all stay clean.

    To set your LPF you set it to where you want all of your low frequencies to play. So if you set it to 40hz, it the sub will play from 40hz and below. For HPF it’s the reverse. If you set it at like 400hz, it will play frequencies 400hz and above. Also sorry to hear everyone’s story but keep up the great work by staying sober 👌🏽🙏🏽💯

    Thanks for the info. There's an even easier equation to use for your method. Just take your box tune hertz and multiply it by .75 and you get the exact number you're doing with all those extra steps 🙂
    Example: My box is tuned to 23hz. 23 x .75 is 17.25hz Subsonic setting.

    • @SOBERSCUMBASSHEAD
      @SOBERSCUMBASSHEAD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nice I havent heard that one yet thank you....where does the .75 come from for the formula??

    • @matpatte
      @matpatte 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's just the same math. You can divide any number by 4, then subtract that from the original number like you are doing. Or you can just take the number times .75 and get the same result with less work is all.

      So the lower the hz the lower the bass? 80hz standard for rap music as an example? And my box is tuned at 32hz so times the by .75 and I get 24 that’s where my subsonic should be set at?

  • @leroylaney307
    @leroylaney307 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I use the album Quad Maximus by Bass Mekanik, it's old af but it runs through all cycles (Hertz) individually. Then to find what my box is tuned to, I set the volume half way up and then play through each cycle. when you match the cycle that your port is tuned at, there is a huge spike in spl. Now I really don't know how accurate this method is but my ears and common sense tell me that it has to be pretty accurate. As far as lpf settings, idk the proper way so I do it by ear also and I usually end up setting it around 40hz or around whatever your box is tuned to. Again I'm not sure if these methods are correct, but they have always worked great for me. I hit a 151.4 with an old zapco 1000 and 1 juggernaut 18' in a 2004 Chevy tracker. Also I always leave bassboost and subsonic filters off and never turn the amp gain past 60 %. P.S. sobriety sucks, but losing your loved ones is far worse. Stay strong brother!

    Depending on what range speakers you are using and how many will play a roll in final tuning frequency you want subs to be as well. Another thing to remember is a bigger driver will be more capable of lower tones than that of a smaller driver.

      Really? A larger driver is capable of lower tones than a smaller 1? I've got a pretty decent JBL setup for home stereo. I have 1, yes just 1 subwoofer 8 inch and it's tuned for 18 Hz - 800 Hz. I can rattle and shake the walls and windows with it. (in one month my neighbors called the police 13 times on me for my stereo. and I live in a house. we've since reconciliated on that :) Your statement is generally true when dealing with more average or entry level subs. I really think it has more to do with the quality of the sub, than the size. Check out Bag End speakers if you want some serious performing subs.

  • @ragewarrior3743
    @ragewarrior3743 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    LPF? The idea is to play the full range of frequencies in music,20Hz to 20Khz. If you low pass is set at 80hz and you high pass at 125hz then what is playing between those two points? Your crossover has different slopes (12db,18db,24db etc.) and remember that when a crossover point is set it is not a wall and stops the frequencies immediately but slopes away the unwanted frequencies. How it slopes away the unwanted frequencies is the crossover's slope. So you can still set a 80hz lpf and 125hz hpf and use the slope of those points to play the frequencies in between. So it's like handing of the frequency from sub to mids to tweeters as gradually as possible. This goes for mids to tweeters too and that's where the frequency response of speakers come in to play from the manufacturer specs. I tweak my mids first cause that where all the voice is and a good rule of thumb is to set XO point double the FS of speaker and work your way down till right before distortion, then you would have an idea where to see lpf and highs. New to car audio so take it with a grain of salt.

  • @goomz84
    @goomz84 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am running active, so i set my crossovers to start and stop where i get full range of sound. Example, my lpf is set to 100hz, where my mids hpf starts. My mids lpf is set to 8k with a 18db slope, the full freq response they can handle. At an 18db slope, where ive read i get a +3db gain at 100hz. My highs are set to 2.15khz hpf (the tweets freq response says just over 1khz)at a 24db slope where ive read that at this slope, more power can be thrown at them without damage. Its been a few months and it all sounds great

Made in Illinois, and been around since the late '70's. But you should be able to leave them to your kin when you pass away their speakers are made so good.

    • @bdc211
      @bdc211 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      thats a lowpass filter bro..... not the subsonic filter... you set the subsonic filter at where your subs low end rolloff occurs.. no sense of putting frequencies through the driver, if the woofer and box tuning wont allow it to project in volume.... youre just beating the woofer with unnecessary excursion at that point.... different drivers and enclosure tuning frequencies, will determine where the low end roll off will occur... once your build is done, run a frequency sweep... at what point you cant here bass projecting and shaking things, yet the driver is mad flexing, thats you roll off.. set the subsonic filter about 5 hz or so befor that point... or, if you are into more of a audiophile type of sound, which is usually yuppys that like jazz and female vocals, and are not bassheads, you will want your subsonic filter at a ballpark of around 30hz.... and no offense to the yuppy audiophiles.😉 ive learned alot from you folks...

    I refer to whichever high frequency the subs specs claims the sub can handle up to. If you cannot find it, then use a tone generator to listen to which higher tones your sub clearly puts and which it doesn't and use that as a reference. For the heck of it, I suggest try reversing the LPF equation in the opposite direction to compare answers with the previous two suggestions but add one full octave to it. For example: 1½ octave higher than box tuning. I may try this now that I'm posting car audio vids.

    LPF will play any tone lower than 80hz when set at 80hz, most subs are around 30hz-200hz in response. The reason they say 80hz to start is because too much lower and system wont play much bass at all because your literally cutting all the bass range from coming through to amp, too high and system will try to play full range (vocals) instead of low range (bass) like subs are made for.

    Out of the comments i read, sounds like people are adjusting gain. Subsonic is the lowest frequency you want your subs to reach without bottoming out. When setting the gain, even meade says to turn your lowpass all the way up. Most cases thats 240. The lower you set the lowpass, the less your subs are gonna hit or articulate. Because it is called a low pass filter, it filters bass above where it is set. Meade also adjusts what he calls overlap. I assume thats the overlap of frequencies the mids and subs hit together. I guess that is done with the low pass filter.

    I know it's been a while since you posted this but I have an answer for you lowpass filter question. This is determined by your mids. Before setting the filter on your subs you have to set your mids. Some mids sound great at 80hz others don't. Your high pass filter on your mids should be set between 80 and 125hz. As low as you can with out distortion. What ever this is set at is were your low pass on your subs should be set. That way you get a clean hand off from subs to mids. And they don't compete

    I’m 3 months sober!!! ALSO LOW PASS FILTER!! In my opinion, low pass filter depends on the music you listen to. I listen to heavy metal. And with the lpf at 80hz I get shitty mid lows mixed in with the kick drums lows. And it reallllly makes the mix muddy and gross. Soo I set the LPF as low as it goes and crank the gain just a tiny bit. And then the music SLAMS!!! Sounds like a real concert. And the overall mix isn’t shitty and muddy.

    I like what you’re doing man. I have been doing this shit since my teens.? I’m 53 now and still love loud bass. I can still learn something everyday! But to the LPF deal. That is just stopping anything above 80 hz from hitting the sub. And in most practical applications you don’t want anything above 80 hz playing from your subs. Now 10s and 8s you might go up to 100 to 120 hz. That just depends on the frequency range of the sub. Many subs have a frequency range up to 200 to 300 hz.

    Nice, Car Audio & Sobriety that's what I'm takin about! As far as the LPF for subs in cars.. it can vary a lot. The best way is to try them at different values. It can also depend on what size speakers you're crossing them over to. Like 6x9s you'd probably set the LPF lower than you would if the car had 5 1/4s in the doors. At the end of the day it's what sounds best to you.

    Just came across your channel last night, subbed right away!! Keep up the cool vids !! Congrats on your sobriety, I 2 am sober now for 5 months!! I just installed a Skar SDR 18 running off a Soundstream ar2500 at 2 ohms in my trailblazer. Still breaking it in !! Had a 15" Soundstream t5 ,and smoked that sub the first day!! This skar must be way underrated on rms? How do I go about ordering some of your shirts?

    I have Two 15s tuned to 30hz on the LPF to get the Low frequency bass. My box is tuned to 30hz also. Also on my radio I have the x-over for sub tuned at 30hz.

      Damn thats low ....but from what ive seen and been told that if you tune your amp and your radio its combines the tuning ....i thought your only supposed to tune from your amps and keep your head unit settings at flat or vise versa ....i always keep my deck flat and do those tunings at the amp???im still learning so I like to hear everyone ones knowledge and opinions ...thanks for wacthing...

      from what ive read it filters out the notes the human ear cant even hear so less work on you amp and sub....if that makes sense

    • @Pkdimmock
      @Pkdimmock 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a pioneer mono amp that does not have a ssf. Most mainstream music doesn't play below 25hz from what I have read and if it does it will only damage your sub if your running full tilt. Bass boosted music may have super lows and running test tones but I have not had any issues so far with regular music. I stay a few points away from max to be safe but seems good. Only other thing I have learnt is that subsonic frequencies can reduce the efficiency of the sub/amp. But again I'm not doing competitions and 1500w is plenty for me day to day.

  • @shalamahthebrew5553
    @shalamahthebrew5553 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for this.
    (Since you were inquiring about it towards the end of the vid) As far as LPF, I just listen to it. If it doesn't play that high I drop it until it can (using tone generator).
    I was told setting LPF too high can heat coil quickly because the woofer is trying to move large mass too quickly at higher frequencies.. but.. you have to be playing a song or constant test tone higher than the box and woofer are capable of for a long period of time for that to occur.. (imo)
    That's am what I know and I thank for sharing what you know.

    • @SOBERSCUMBASSHEAD

      @@SOBERSCUMBASSHEAD That's super low though if you just mean 37÷4. That's less than 10Hz, man. For the safety of the sub, up high to like 30 would be best. If it was TUNED to 30, you could go lower.
      Also depends on your sub quality and Xmax

    • @SOBERSCUMBASSHEAD
      @SOBERSCUMBASSHEAD  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@notsure7404 so 37 divided by 2 is a full octave below the port tuning of 37 so half an octave would be half of a half...then so 37 ÷2 is 18.5 full.octave. below port tunning ...half on octave would be 18.5÷2 = 9.25 which is half a octave below 37....so you take 37-9.25...25.75 would be your setting around 26 subsonic setting
