      While I'm pretty sure discharge of a weapon in a residential neighborhood is illegal I'm also pretty sure it's commonplace in that part of country. Hence, the cops become inured to it. The caller complained about the shooting of the weapon, not fear of an impending attack. Given that it's a commonplace occurence, I don't see that the police in this case are as responsible for the deaths as the shooter.

  • @lindamattix

    A question that no one has addressed at all is: why were people allowed to shoot guns in that neighborhood?? One of the neighbors had said that people shoot guns all the time; they get drunk and go outside and shoot the ground. When Oropeza was shooting the other night, it wasn't out of the ordinary; it was just too noisy for the baby to sleep at that late hour. So, there is neither a restriction on shooting guns in a neighborhood nor an ordinance that says you can't make noise between 11 pm and 7 am. Granted, that's a more rural neighborhood, but it's still obviously a neighborhood. Shooting ANY guns in such close proximity could accidentally go through a wall or a window of another home. Add drunkenness to the mix... this lack of neighborhood safety measures is ridiculous; stupid!!! Is it or is it not legal to shoot guns in a Texas neighborhood? If it's illegal, why didn't the authorities stop the dangerous nightly "entertainment" on any other night before this shooting? Did the police not care? Did no one report it? What kind of state is this where no one has the right to feel protected?

    This kind of behavior is not normal when related to children. We grew up around guns because my grandparents on both sides of the family had farms and they hunted. We were introduced to guns around the age of 10, 11, or 12. But they were always looked at as tools, and that was it. There was no obsession over owning guns, so introducing children to them in the context of them being tools worked out fine. I remember four or five different rifle type weapons that they had for different needs. They didn’t collect them for the sake of collecting them. Each weapon had a purpose, and when it wasn’t in use, it was in a locked cabinet. We didn’t give it a second thought because it was part of being on the farm. The guns in the cabinets were no different than a tractor or any other piece of equipment on the farm. My family on both sides, looked at gun ownership in a responsible way, and it worked for all of us. Finally, it didn’t come at the expense of anyone else, because we never looked at the guns as weapons to use against our neighbors or anyone else. Nothing that ever happened ever escalated to the point where you felt the need to use a gun to defend yourself. Everyone was reasonable, and we all just live our lives peacefully.

    • @K162KingPin
      @K162KingPin ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is that there is no international consensus on the definition of the term "mass shooting" In the united states a few years ago "mass shooting" meant, at least 4 people killed by a single gunman, not including the gunman themselves. Now less than 3 years later some news headlines read "mass shooting" referring to as little as 3 people being shot with ZERO deaths. Though most media still at least sticks to the idea of a "mass shooting" being at least 4 people shot, possibly including the gunman, with at least one death. The point is that even in the US the definition is not only unclear but changing rapidly over just a few years.
      On the other hand in virtually ever other country a "mass shooting" doesn't have a specific number of deaths but most agree that it would require at least 4 deaths, NOT including the shooter, and most importantly for POLITICAL reasons. If they do not determine that the shooting was politically motivated, then they just call it a "multiple homicide". Needless to say if the vast majority of these incidents in the US were reported as "multiple homicides" like they are in virtually every other country, then the numbers compared would be much more similar.
      Canada has another HUGE advantage over the US in terms of murders. Canada is HUGE, like the US, but they only about about 1/10 the population. Inevitably spreading people out lowers tension. A rather intelligent A.I. once concluded, that if you put humans in a confined space, you either end up with more humans, or less humans. This is not an excuse by any means, simply a fact of our nature.
      Most interestingly, to me at least, is that while the media seems to say every few days that there has been yet another "mass shooting", those mass shootings only seem to claim around 700 lives per year. Meanwhile over 43,000 people die every year in traffic accidents. The common argument is that "accidents" can't be prevented. This is ridiculous. If accidents couldn't be prevented then OSHA wouldn't exist. Germany has about 1/4 the traffic deaths / year per capita, that the USA has. Yet they are known most of all for having unlimited speed on at least some areas. Clearly there is much more that could be done to drastically reduce traffic deaths. If we had a government that actually cared about the 110 people dying every day in traffic we could make significant progress and with only minor changes to our overall system. Instead the media, the population, and the government focus almost exclusively on one of our smallest causes of death "mass shootings" an made up term that has been Americanized and Supersized to mean almost anything we want and distract us from far more important issues.

Considering our president voted out of office only 3 years ago actually attempted to take over the country using martial law in order to stay in power, I would have to say that the right to bear arms is obviously doing its job. Every one of his military advisors told him the same thing, "it would be impossible".
      Sure its sad that 700 people a year die in "mass shootings". Its much more sad that 43,000 die every year in traffic, which no one seems to care about at all. Still that pails in comparison to the millions that would die in a civil war if the government and the military didn't KNOW beyond any doubt that they have no chance of conquering their own country and should happen to give it a try.

Your country is seriously F$%@ED UP. Here in Canada we recently banned assault rifles with a buy back program. On top of that, Canadians are super friendly and shootings rarely occur. If any American wants to move to Canada so that you don't get murdered for no reason, I will personally welcome you here with open arms and then buy you a beer. Cheers everyone.

      Even curtailing guns will be only a band-aid. There's a deeper issue at play - a strong macho, Social Darwinist mindset. The US thinks the most cutthroat competition brings out the best results; a defintion of "freedom" just barely this side of anarchy; the upper class putting their own convenience ahead of human rights; and a definition of 'leadership' based on the same. That explains our feet-dragging on not just guns, but also feet-dragging on expanding access to health care and education, curtailing bullying (workplace and school). *The US needs a major cultural overhaul.*
