  • Hello friends, welcome to another chug battle, this time we are putting the ampero 2 stomp up against the line 6 hx stomp! Signal Chain is Guitar - Modeler - Apollo Twin Duo. Mesa Cab is for displaying the units, not used in the video. No post processing happening, what you are hearing are sounds directly from the units aside from the shootout portion, which I will list what is being used on screen.

    I bought the Ampero. As a bass player, it will be more than plenty. I've already loaded up dual path, biamped rigs. As long as I stay away from dsp heavy stuff, I don't run out. Word is that they are already crunching numbers to get more options in terms of all 12 blocks with fewer limitations. I agree about the pitch stuff. My PodGo sounds better for that. Hopefully, Hotone will address that as well. Overall, it's a solid product, and should do very well for them.

      I agree. It's young, I'm sure it will have some major improvements via firmware updates, that seems to be the way the market works for these things now... get the hardware out there, and then update it to it's full potential rather than developing it in house for another year or so.

    One of my favourite home made presets on the line 6 HX Stomp is a Marshall Plexi bright with the Tweed Blues BRT amp cab combinations your signal going in splits half to one amd half to the other and that’s literally the end of the story as far as DSP goes I built that rig when I first got it a year ago and with the Marshall as my starting point of a two different style amps in a mono rig and with the Tweed added and the EQ to taste it’s like AC/DC in a box with balls but nowhere near a metal tone I was using the combo blocks in the beginning and I still love the way that those two amps with their respective cabs blend together sadly that was just shy of the DSP limit with no real effects that I was looking for to add available like a vibe or reverb or chorus there were a few eq and such but not what I was looking for…. A few months later I got the Powercab 112 for Christmas and although it doesn’t have the IR loader that the plus version does but it’s still got the speaker modelling and so with that I rebuilt the same rig without the speaker cab built into the blocks set the eq on both the same added a phaser because I just wanted something different amd that tone is so brown without being an evh ripoff I thought it would be awesome for VH riffs with phase effect and it’s not something I normally use so from there I started experimenting with different stock IRs along with different speaker sims from the powercab I learned that splitting the signal to two different amps and back together immediately to be sent through phasing and then an IR sounded very different from the parent tone however it’s a really good tone on it’s own and I’ll admit that my big issue is not blending two different IRs together like what’s happening with the original one sadly I didn’t know that part of it at the time and I haven’t had the time to really sit down and experiment / download anything aside from what came with update 3.10 and I think I could do a better matching job with some sort of aftermarket IR with less DSP than I could with the stock cabs the other thing I plan on doing once I have the extra time is to invest in an IR loader pedal to go between the HX Stomp and the Powercab 112 and basically get Powercab + functionality and lower DSP presets with more room for effects ….. sorry for the long winded comment I just got the a little past the 7 min. Mark amd that popped in my mind … I thought mabie someone could gain something from my experience keep in mind that when all this was done I had been playing guitar for just shy of 20 years and had exclusively played my Marshall JCM2000 TSL 60 half stack with a OD as a boost built in reverb a Dunlop UV-1 UniVibe reissue and a basic 95 model crybaby for over 15 years and completely satisfied with my tones between sparkling edge of breakup with a heavy touch blues tone all the way through squeezing pinched harmonics and thumping palm muted galloping rhythms and it was only the need to move my rig around by myself after a spinal injury that lead me to the digital solution…. I switched over because I had an crippling accident that’s left me disabled and live in a rural Canadian province and had to make sure I could carry my gear without help and without hurting myself and of wanting to practice when my children are sleeping now that I’ve grown up and I haven’t actually plugged into my Marshall in over a year because I have fallen in love with the 5 or so presets along with the Beano for humbuckers free preset from the 5 watt world #ThankYouKiethWilliams that I have and I haven’t even downloaded any 3rd party IRs or aside from that one preset from the video that helped make my decision to get the stomp it’s all stock from updates and my own tone chasing I love the sounds I’ve built with it and since then I got a guitar with single coil pickups for the first time since I was beginning and I still see no reason to think that I’m missing out on anything other than wanting a little more DSP available to finish that one presetbive been working on …. Hope this helps someone peace and love from Nova Scotia Canada Eh

    When running to an interface and DAW like you are doing, the DSP limitations can be overcome by using plugins for post-processing and reverb etc. Just use the unit as a tone generator. One thing that is important is how the amp models would react to a real overdrive or boost hitting the input hard. If it does well, then that is more DSP freed up. Could just use plugin amps and ditch the modeller all together, but that can have some difficulties (amp models in DAW can be very sensitive to input levels, so you have to adjust them depending on what pups you use etc -- e.g., when I go from a Super Distortion to a PAF or HS3).

      Thanks! My preference for live is the AxeFx 3 lol. I run 2 guitars and a bass through it, so having all that processing power in my rack somewhere out of the way is a huge deal for me. When I record, I use plugins out of convenience. I'm going to make a video on this subject soon because I do get this question quite a bit, and I want to give a really thoughtful response, but to sum it up... I rarely get to play guitar for fun, and when I do it's usually axefx or some plugin.

      @@TaylorDanley thanks for showing this dsp test. To me this is the most relevant test . I had this dsp limitation with my Fender mustang gtx 50 amp . I got frustrated with options on that amp being greyed out so I returned it. It's like some computers or cell phones advertising 20 gigs of RAM but the software is incapable of using it. I suppose the real test would be to look at the neural dsp quad cortex to see when it reaches its limits ( even though it is COMPLETELY in a different market $$$) , it could confirm that Amperos 3 processer dsp is just advertising over function.

    • @aptfx
      @aptfx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@allboutthemojo The thing is that modeler vendors now start to use marketing methods that was quite common on PC or phone market: Counting "DSP cores" as if this would be a sensible metric for power. On one side: It isn't clear defined what a "DSP core" is. In the case of Headrush MX5 it is a 6 year old ARM SoC (think "iphone 6") with 4 cores. Those cores are not special "DSPs" but generic CPU cores. Since generic CPUs now have certain features to use them for signal processing were one would use dedicated DSP chips this kinda works. The Ampero uses SHARC which is a completely different architecture. 3 SHARC dsps could be more powerful than a 4 core ARM SoC... or not. Why? Because the hardware is only part of the story. All those units use different modeling algorithms. I tested the MX5 and was very unimpressed with its modeling of just an Amp and a Cab. The fact that you can easily throw in multiple Amps is an indication that the Amp modeling of the MX5 is quite simple compared to other current units. This also makes comparisons like in this video... a bit questionable... just stuffing the chains until it doesn't work anymore doesn't say anything about the quality of the algorithms used in each effect or amp model. This exercise makes more sense in what you could build as chains with each unit of course or how quickly you can reach its limits. Other devices like the MG-30 have a different approach there: There each block has a dedicated effect style and you can change the effect style to another on some blocks. So not any block can take any effect. On the other side - you cannot run out of DSP using it - regardless on what pedal, amps and cabs you choose. So its limited - but in a different way.

    • @allboutthemojo
      @allboutthemojo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aptfx yes. True. The sharc chips are supposed to be better. I just think that maybe the neural dsp quad chip will be a better application simply because they are in the modeling business at a professional level. Their captures , application and utilization of processing power should be a lot better. Even though they are in a league way above the ampero, just comparing based on " processing power advertised.

    • @aptfx
      @aptfx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@allboutthemojo The dsp power itself is only part of the story. If the algorithms are implemented inefficiently even a more powerful DSP can be more limited. The quad cortex also is a profiler which means its fundamentally different to white box modeling like Fractal does. With profiling the computationally intensive part is the profiling, while the actual _use_ while playing isn't really expensive. White box modeling is expensive because simulation of circuits in real time is algorithmically expensive

    Ampero 2 stomp ftw. There were times where I felt the HX stomp would cut through the mix more, but the ampero 2 just has the better fidelity. At the price, I feel ampero's value is stronger. I think I've seen some HX stomp's go for 300ish on reverb, and that isn't so bad for what you get (granted one may have to throw down on more software for it? Idk I don't own one). My perspective is from someone who owns neither but if I took the dive, it would be for the Ampero 2.

    I'm owning the ampero 2 stomp for around 5 days now and the sound is a lot better, more defined/natural with the built in Ir's, compared to the pod go and ge 300(using tone captures) . (if you live inside Europe, i'm selling my ge300 with 21 month warranty remaining!)
    As you have seen for yourself, the can be done a lot to the firmware to further increase the algorithms/dsp in the future and for 500€ it's just a beast. Yes the mx5 does dual stuff too, but it simply sounds a bit weird. (digital, non natural dynamics, a bit cheap/plasticy?)
    I haven't played a helix unit with the newest firmware, so i don't know how much better it sounds noe compared to 2 years ago, but the helix is definitely at the end of it's live and until other companies are starting to built new, very good sounding modellers out of the box, the ampero 2 will be it's own league in it's price range.

    A good review, it is clear that the manufacturer saves on processor power. But no matter how you turn it, Line6 has better effects, don’t say what, it’s just that the Chinese don’t know how to do pitch correctors and harmonizers. Why don't processors on 128 GB SD still write loops or just tracks, why don't they make a microphone input? When will there be universal devices to write everything in one device. And yes, Taylor, a measly 0.5% of the world's population listens to metal, so the effects of overdrive are not always appropriate. But spatial processing and a multifunctional and compact device would be handy, the song was sung and played lying on the couch, and then mixed in the studio, it's easier. THANK YOU for the comparison!
