- Find out how to choose and sow cover crop or green manure with RHS Chief Horticulturist Guy Barter. Green manures are an excellent way to improve your garden's fertility without having to buy fertilizers and also benefits wildlife and the environment.
Green manures are fast-growing plants sown to cover bare soil. Often used in the vegetable garden, their foliage smothers weeds and their roots prevent soil erosion. When dug into the ground while still green, they return valuable nutrients to the soil and improve soil structure.

Thank you for a very informative video. I remember being taught about about green manuring over 50 years ago and have practiced this method of enriching the soil many times since. Mustard seed has always been my choice to sow but interesting to see wild bird seed as a cheaper option. I must admit this choice of seed is new to me!
Glad to hear you found the video informative and learned something new!
Thanks so much, for explaining the finer details.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for the advice, I do have one or two questions though.
Don’t the birds eat the seed?! ..and it has been raining very hard here recently, should I tap the seed in with the rake instead of treading it in?
Thank you
