The big Cali76 really does sound and "feel" great. I wonder how much comes from the transformer?
I do like the ability to blend in dry signal though.

The info on the original also says it has a class A amplifier stage that feeds the transformer, while the small version doesn't mention this at all in the literature, so the transformer alone might not be the only difference. I thought I was getting the pedal without just the transformer, more features, but that's apparently not the case.
      Kind of a bummer.

the "big" cali sounds amazing its got that vibe. I have the previous version of the little bass Compressor 76. I like it, but it doesn't have that thing going on with your big unit.
BTW, and no surprise, your playing has improved significantly. Thanks for doing this comparison

hi, great review and comparison, i also thought the tx just sounded a bit better all around, but, as you mention, they are rare and expensive. so i am thinking about getting the more compact and "affordable" bass compressor...was wondering if you have found that you can dial in a good setting where you can play fingerstyle, pick, AND get a good slap tone (i.e. not having it totally squashed and losing the low end) without having to change it?

The comp settings are gonna vary depending on how hard you attack the strings with all of those techniques and how you’re using the comp specifically; like a limiter, always compressing slightly, squashing the signal, etc.
However, you can definitely set it up in a way that it evens out all the playing styles throughout a live performance. The HPF and dry knob are your friends. Those controls help to free up low end, while still taming down loud spikes.

Great comparison. The OG seems to have THE SAUCE, which is totally not lost through TH-cam at all. It kinda makes me a little bummed because I sold my Lundahl a couple years ago when the price went through the roof, but made enough to buy this one for free. 😅
Anyhow, I wish you had sine 2 things...
    1) Ran the TX at 9v to turn off the transformer
    2) Used the Blend and HPF to give it some extra sparkle and low end. Perhaps those controls set to zero interfere with the sound just a tad.
Anyhow, these things would help in making a decision, including maybe getting an external transformer for the little guy.
    Poking more into the situation....

I use the big box tx with a mosquito blender, to allow a smidge of dry signal back in. IMO it makes it even better!

The largest sounds much more natural to me. Both sound great. Solid playing. Thanks

BIg Cali definitely has a record like quality to it; but at the same time I wonder how the Bass Comp would sound being followed by a transformer like Lightning Boy Audio 2020s. I made the jump from Compact Bass to Bass comp and I'm glad I did!

I wonder this also. I wish he'd run the TX in 9v mode to remove the transformer from the equation, to see if it's worth getting a transformer.
Also, I wish he'd used dry and HPF knobs to try and equalized the sound a bit more.
I used to have the Lundahl one but didn't use it much since I was mainly playing guitar at the time, so I sold it when prices went through the roof. Made enough to basically get the BASS FET for free. 😅
Anyhow, the OG was amazing. It didn't sound junky like most compressors. The compression was suuuuoer smooth, and it did impart tonal changes, but it was just like an awesome studio polish to everything.
Unfortunately, that was a couple years ago and I can compare the directly or through memory precisely. Haven't used the new one yet as it has just arrived and I'm super busy, but maybe I'll be able to tell if it has the magic at all.
One thing to note is that when I had it, I never even ran it at 18v, so I wasn't even using the transformer at all.. And it was amazing!

Very nice sounding but mistake taking away the HPF...that's why some people bought the pedal version...i thought being bigger it maybe had 2 smaller transformers...i can't see the benefit over the smaller more versarile pedal version..you cannot put it in a rack & you would have to buy a new bigger pedal board, not really built for the road, i would think more for studios...should be better sounding but i would miss that HPF pot ,though all DAW's have HPF's..... better sounding than the Noble ?....

    • @IvanBassist
      @IvanBassist  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The HPF of the compressor is not like a HPF in an EQ plugin or channel strip.
It affects how the compressor reacts to low frequencies. It does not remove bass from your tone.

@@IvanBassist ...no need to remove my comments...wow..so it just applies compression to a set point, set by the HPF pot...i prefer Ashdowns HPF...
