If one considers the construction of a mirror, it's a sheet of silvered glass, mounted in a frame. Behind the glass is (usually) a wooden backing panel. Now, consider the sequence of events: Fist hits glass - glass is, up until impact, WHOLE and INTACT. The fist doesn't brush past ANY broken glass (nor THROUGH the glass, and it's stopped by the wooden panel behind it), because the fist CAUSES broken glass. If one imagines the event in slow motion, her knuckles approach the glass surface, and cause it to distort until such time as it gives way and fractures. Now, because there's a wooden panel directly BEHIND the glass, and due to inertia, her knuckles merely *press the shards and pin them in place, holding them pressed against the wooden panel UNTIL she retracts her fist/hand backwards and away from the glass* - whereupon they may either stay in situ, or small pieces MAY fall away. It is entirely possible her knuckles COULD be pressing against the intersection of two shattered pieces of glass, BUT because it's very likely that all the sharp, intersecting edges are still flush with one another, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle held together by friction, on the same plane as the glass, and supported by the wooden panel, injury is VERY unlikely. It's easier to punch a mirror and see for oneself; I'm not sure I can recommend that, though! ^_^
