    Thank you so much Johan for this wonderful video. Because of you and this video I finally have the guts to go ahead and make a hot wire cut Wisel. I made one using flat EPS 1" thick and the RM1 wing shape. It has not been a good experience. I learned from you that the wingroot already includes the ailerons. I never got that from working my way through the Wisel thread. You have given me a great gift. Thank you.

    Such a wonderfully clear explanation of your wiesel build. Thanks for posting

    Great video. I have followed that thread for a couple years and always had this on my to do list, thanks for sharing the process.

      You should try to make one and cover it with normal covering film, (if you not have one yet) :)

      @@SpeedsterDEN I haven't use covering film since I built the Blue Phoenix back in the '80s. The covered wisels and the XL in particular looks fantastic, but our slope landing spots tend to have stiff twigs and dry grass that I fear would poke a hole in the film on the first landing.
      Other than looks, what's the advantage of a balsa+film version over a hot wire cut one? Weight?

    • @SpeedsterDEN
      @SpeedsterDEN 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johanbergkvist8834 There is no advantage of the 90 cm balsa version :) but it is a nice kit to build. Weight is around the same as a normal Wisel
      But the XL is really nice to fly and also good in the thermals, and I have flown it alot this spring, from the slope and also towing it in the club. In a week or 2 there will be 3 XL flying in my club.

    At 8:02 not even necessary. I just cut with a ruler and make the trailing edge straight. It looks flimsy, but it works great and it is 100% true to the airfoil. That means even less weight to compensate for at the front. And... no worries about warping balsa!!!
    [...]
    At 18:40 My suggestion. If one uses one of the hard-to-beat PW-airfoils... do as suggested and hinge on the bottom, not the top!

    • @johanbergkvist8834
      @johanbergkvist8834  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're saying to use the cut away strip as the actual elevon? I did that for the 95g Wiesel, but didn't think it would be stiff enough for anything heavier? Do you reinforce it? And you're quite right; the balsa elevons do warp.
      Hinge location: You are right. I'm just so used to hinging on the top. Bad habit. :)

    • @nickvledder
      @nickvledder 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johan Bergkvist Hinging at the bottom serves more than one purpose. First, the PW-airfoils are supposed to perform better. Second, servo is mounted at bottom of the wing, hence the rudderhorn (elevonhorn) can be made shorter as the bottom of the wing has less curve as the top.
      [...]
      Any tape I apply to XPS is applied with a thin layer of UHU POR, applied to the XPS first. I use the lightest of tapes for the bottom hinge, but a wide (3-4cm?) version. Hence the hinge-tape also reinforces both the elevon as the wing itself, still being almost 100% true to the airfoil.

    • @nickvledder
      @nickvledder ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johanbergkvist8834 Do you reinforce it? No, not needed as the thin tape used to hinge elevon to wing also keeps the elevon straight. Use broader piece of (thin) tape for hinging if needed. Works great! Two birds with one stone.

    I noticed you use the expanding Gorilla glue to join the wing halves. You didn't mention that you add any moisture to the glue joint before assembly. Could you tell me if you use any moisture? Thanks, David

      I don't remember, but my guess is I did not. But moisture is a good idea, indeed!

    Hi, great video thanks! Where do you get the size of 350mm for the route cord? The plan I have says 290mm plus 40mm elevon.

    • @johanbergkvist8834
      @johanbergkvist8834  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think (but I don't quite remember) that 350mm is what you get when you use this (static.rcgroups.net/forums/attachments/3/1/2/9/8/7/a10234356-227-WiselProfile_root%5B1%5D.jpg) template and the ruler measurements on it.

    How can you tell with a flying wing if the cg is wrong or you just need to add/subtract more reflex... ??

    • @johanbergkvist8834
      @johanbergkvist8834  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should glide straight with the control surfaces extending the wing profile. Also, if the elevator is very sensitive then that would indicate that the CG is wrong. But you ask a very good question and the honest answer is "I don't really know".

      @@johanbergkvist8834 Yeah its one of those things I never fully understood about Rc stuff.. A plane is easy but a wing on its own is much more difficult IMO.. I built a dlg wing about 4 years back.. And I spent about 50 flights trying to figure out was it the cg or did i need more reflex.. In the end the wing got badly damaged from all the tests.. Constantly smashing into the dirt.... Very frustrating !!

    Do I have to print the root cord template in A3 to get the correct size? If not do I enlarge the size of the template?

    • @johanbergkvist8834
      @johanbergkvist8834  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I printed the templates and adjusted the print scale to get the correct size. That took a few attempts to get right. The app (MS Paint, I think) correctly deduced that it would have to be printed over several A4 sheets. Then I taped the A4 sheets together to get the complete template.
