@@shawnwillsey Something very wrong with American education if so many have the idea that Tibet has been a sovereign state recently grabbed by China.
Your national bias against communism is clearly affecting teaching or do you all believe what the papers tell you.
Such poverty of knowledge has probably been the reason for the US getting into wars with all and sundry for well over 100 years. Lack of foreign policy nowse is what has resulted.

Shigatse is a wonderful area with lovely people. The Monastery has a large collection of ancient texts. Trees are rare in this area due to elevation. Buildings are built with sun dried mud bricks so they break easilyin an earthquake. Prayers for the people. 🙏

As I tell my students, this is a long-duration car crash with the Himalayas being the rising "crumple zone" of the vehicle. Unfortunately the quakes in that region tend to result in large fatality numbers. I sure hate to see that.

There's a reason the Japanese built their houses with post and beam somewhat flexible 'skeletons' and light weigh partitions. But then they Go and put the heavy tiles on the roof.

Thank you Shawn for the in-depth analysis. It just goes to show how important the detail is. I wouldn't have expected to see a normal fault but as soon as you showed the neo tectonic maps, it made perfect sense.
I remember my daughter telling me about studying crustal deformation in her final year and focussing on this particular fault system. She said in summary that the Indian plate boundary does some crazy stuff. Now I can see why. Brilliant. Thanks again.

Just as a fyi, a couple of news teams on the ground on the day of the quake have posted livestream video and updates with more imagery from the epicentre. I saw some images of major road damage as well as damage to homes and other buildings.
Many of the buildings in the rural areas of Tibet are old enough to precede understanding of how building styles can impact their response to earthquakes, so there are going to be a lot of them that came down, unfortunately.
    It's very sad situation.
Additionally there was a fairly large earthquake on the northeastern edge of the plateau last week, which makes it seem the entire area has been more active than usual over the last week or two.

Thanks Shawn for this geologist's view of the Indian subcontinent's structure that gives an insight into its tectonic underpinning. What I'd like to see is a map showing the likelihood of seismic events coupled with population density and building construction techniques. I noticed the buildings (and people living therein) during the Japanese earthquake of 2011 survived remarkably well. Unfortunately much was destroyed by the following tsunami. Relatively little loss of life due to the earthquake, as huge as it was, because Japan has such high building standards, standards not affordable in most of the rest of the world.
Many years ago, during the mid Carboniferous, when I was in high school, I remember reading of the horrific loss of life that occurred due to historic Chinese earthquakes and when a large one struck China (50 years ago?) followed by "official" Chinese government reports of "only a few causalities," I knew it would be in the hundreds of thousands and I was right. As a result of this latest quake, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see the official number of reported causalities to great increase, maybe into the thousands.
I never understood why these earthquakes caused such huge number of fatalities until I toured Egypt many years ago. I saw how people in poor countries are crowded into multi-story and poorly, --- very poorly --- reinforced brick or stone structures that take only the slightest (sometimes no) motion to cause them to pancake down, one floor collapsed on top on another or tip over, shatter and shower masonry into the streets.
When touring the suburbs of Cairo, and having dinner as a guest in one such multi-story building, I was horrified at what I was seeing and nervous all the time I was in that apartment lest there should be even a slight shake. If ever an earthquake struck Lower Egypt, even a minor one, the shaking would be amplified by the deep alluvial soils, their buildings so poorly and cheaply constructed and the high density of people living in those buildings would result in a death count in the hundreds of thousands, maybe millions.

Areas of the world with lower economic advantages often use non-reinforced masonry (mud brick, grouted rock, non reinforced concrete, etc.) for structures. Those buildings have lower survivability when the ground moves simply because those structures crumble with the induced shear loads. We see this again and again and there is no real answer to this because the reality is, that those people cannot afford more robust construction and they just have to take their chances.

@@shawnwillsey Ok well I'm here now. It's the headset. Throw it. 1. make sure u have a high end PCI-e soundcard with an external interface where you plug in the mic. 2. Then make sure the microphone input level is never in the red on your video recording software. 3. use a limiter if u need to deal with excessive background noise or want to tighten up the vocal recording. 4. or buy a high end headset if u prefer that set up but the voice wont ever be as good.

Maybe someone will say that it’s now more complicated than quantum physics. 😳😵‍💫

So, it appears that that mass to the right is getting smooshed into the Pacific plate too. Might that mean that Japan and the Philippines are going to be compressed, resulting in rising elevation? Just a thought. I certainly hope the death toll doesn't rise.

I don't think the Tibetans will appreciate you describing Tibet as a region of China. It was annexed by China and the Tibetans continue to suffer major human rights abuses. Essentially, Tibet is what Putin wants to achieve in Ukraine.

India slammed into China doing at least 5 miles an hour. That is a faster car crash which makes more sense.
When all the slabs that subducted so fast in the plate tectonics 10000yrs ago are melting now. With that melting you going to get a lot of water released making the magma thinner causing a lot of volcanos, water steaming up and earthquakes around tectonics plates.
    Tsunami time!.
Earth is warming up but when all this chaos slows down, we will be in a new ice age.
I wouldn’t want to live near any coast are volcanoes.

OK Shawn, Bye Bye. You made an incredibly ignorant statement about Tibet being southern China and when people called you out on it you erased their comments. I'm a Nick Zentner follower and pretty much a follower of you. Not any more. I wonder now about your belief in freedom and the importance of supporting same world wide.
