Catching 10 Pound Spiny Lobster & Freeshafting 20 Pound Grouper

This summer is my first time freeshafting. Decided to commit to the freeshaft this year instead of line shafting. Having a blast with it so far and seeing huge advantages with the range, follow up shots, and simplicity. Not missing getting lined tangled!

i think oxygen is allowed if its commercial diving ... fish is for sale just like fishing on boats... you are fishing sustainably by selecting fish --- free shafting looks good only if the fish does not take off with your shaft 😀

Free shafting grouper makes sense I guess. They seem to just want to run into a hole instead of swimming off into the Abyss.

Exactly! I was hesitant to do it, thinking I would be losing a lot more fish but so far that’s not been the case. For this style of spearfishing it makes a lot of sense because grouper like to hole up as you mentioned, and unless they’re really big like 25+ pounds, they ain’t going too far with a 60 inch shaft in them. Obviously my intention is to make a good shot and stone them so they don’t suffer, but those opportunities don’t always present themselves. You also get much greater range with a free shaft with less power since you don’t have a line attached with a finite distance, double floppers, slide ring, spring, etc. All that adds up to more weight and less penetration when shooting perpendicular to the fish. Would definitely recommend it to anyone with some shooting experience mainly diving reefs. The particular setup I’m running now does allow me to run a slide ring over the shaft to convert it to a lineshaft if absolutely necessary. Spear gods “evolution shaft”.

Good question Mark. I actually didn't have a spearfishing dive knife at that time to brain them with. However, I should have ripped gills out to help dispatch quickly. Live and learn! I try not to get too caught up in the moment and remember to do that these days.
