- Violin arrangement of Johannes Brahms' "Regina Caeli" from his Three Sacred Choruses, Op. 37. Published in 1866, Brahms' "Three Sacred Choruses" is the result of an exchange in writing contrapuntal exercises with his friend Joseph Joachim (the violinist who would later premiere Brahms' violin concerto). The piece was scored for an unaccompanied chorus of four women's voices with two soloists. It is a canon in contrary motion with choral interjections of "alleluia."
Latin Text:
Regina caeli laetare, alleluia.
Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia.
Resurrexit sicut dixit, alleluia.
Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.
Gaude et laetare, Virgo Maria, alleluia.
Quia surrexit Dominus vero, alleluia.
Translation:
Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia,
because He, whom you were worthy to bear, alleluia,
is risen as He had said, alleluia.
Pray to God for us, alleluia.
Delight and rejoice, Virgin Mary, alleluia,
Because the Lord is risen indeed, alleluia.
