I can’t speak for all K-rappers, but BTS definitely knows rap/hip hop history. They even wrote about their early influences and what it means to them in a song called Hip Hop Lover. J-Hope often references how J-Cole has been his music hero and a major influence from before BTS when he was a street dancer. His first mixtape was even called Hope World. This song is part farewell for now to ARMY because he’s about to do his mandatory military service and part homage to J-Cole. Some people wonder why J-Hope doesn’t rap more on this track, but it’s almost like a duet reminiscent of his dancing roots when J-Hope is dancing on the subway platform to J-Cole’s verse and symbolic that he goes from that to meeting him at the top of the building. They met met last summer when they both played Lollapalooza. J-Hope told J-Cole how much he loved Friday Night Lights and that Higher was his favorite song.

The end kinda mirrors the start. I got like he would be talking to younger self, then kinda goes in the video a journey (signifying a lifes journey for how it started), ends up in the rooftop tapping Cole kinda signifying where he is now. Comfortable, happy but obviously in a middle of change.
So, a lot of people are reacting to j-hope for the first time and trying to understand why j-hope did the song structure/ verses the way he did. But I think many people struggle to understand his background and beginnings - which are in his “dance on the street”. So when you saw him give an extra verse to J.Cole on the song, it was because he was giving JC the verse to yes, express himself lyrically but also so j-hope has it to dance on top of. Every one of those dance moves were a throwback to moves he used in different performances or moments. So, this was to the fans of his dance history - j-hope on the street. I believe it meant more for him to have J. Cole with the space needed to express himself in verse while he could then dance on top of the beat. Why would he “give up” the verse to J.Cole? He said that was his muse when he met him so I think he wanted to hear what JC would say if given time. Plus he got to dance on that spot. I love it. Sooo much. 👏💜❤️🏀
Definitely, there is a lot of mutual respect in this collab. BTS did a song Born Singer in 2013 months after their debut based on J Cole's Born Sinner. There was a massive nod to their hip hop inspirations including J Cole who is a huge inspiration to J-HOPE particularly. There are nods to J Cole in a lot of his solo music. They never officially released the song, it was just available on Sound cloud until they released their anthology Proof last year which is when they contacted JCole to get the permissions. Since then JHope headlined at Lollapalooza and met J Cole there and I guess this collaboration idea was born. Also, one of the reasons J Hope dances here more than sings is because this was his nod to his roots as a street dancer and a goodbye for now to us, fans as he is going into obligatory military service in the next month or two. So there were Easter eggs in the mv for the fans, nods to his personality and background. 💜 I'd recommend to check out Cypher Pt.3 Killer from their latest concert in Busan in 2022 with English subs. The rapline of BTS absolutely slaughtered it. You'll get a kick out of it. It was a free concert by the way for 50-70K. And it was sooo good!

As big as Jcole is and how respected he is as an rapper, Jhope did not get on this collab to cross over to the American industry for popularity or exposure. Jhope is just as big of an artist and both are in their own rights. This may not be as well known since alot of people are not tuned to the other music generes and what Kpop is or the current music trend is going. Jhope help produce and write this song to dedicate it as his last song for his fans before enlisting to the military. He has always respected and mentioned how much JCole was an influence to him as an artist. JHope along with his group BTS has crossed paths with JCole in the past. They even covered one of his song "Born Sinner" long time ago in their younger days coming up. I'm sure JHope wanted to give JCole a bigger role in this song as his purpose was to show his respect for JCole as an artist. I believe his interpretention for this song was the fact that he started as a dancer. JHope is a rapper, producer, singer and dancer so he wanted to reflect the old days when he used to post live videos of him dancing for his fans. Sometimes alot to JColes tracks and those videos of him freestyling back then were called "Hope on the Street"...
Thank you for a fair and open minded reaction. Since this song dropped I have seen a disheartening amount of negativity towards J Hope. You were correct that BTS have strong roots in hip hop. Two of the three rappers did come from the underground scene and because the group was changed up from being strictly hip hop to a kpop group they were catching it from both sides. The underground rappers were calling them sellouts and the kpop community said they didn't meet the beauty standards of being a kpop idol. They were also shaking up the kpop industry as their small independent label was not following the industry 'rules'. They grew their fanbase by posting vlogs prior to debut and releasing songs on SoundCloud for free. From the first album on, RM, Suga and J Hope were writing their own rap lyrics and songs for the group. Suga was producing beats. They also had a few in house producers instrumental in creating the music. All the members write and produce at this point. At that time it was not common for idols to have creative freedom/input. J Hope started as a hip-hop dancer prior to joining bts. He has cited J Cole as a big influence on him when he began writing his own lyrics and beats. He learned to rap practicing with RM and Suga. All three have their own distinct styles which keeps things interesting. These three are true lovers of hip-hop and continually pay homage to their rap influences. @@trollplayer5725 I mean since rap is all about what is being said, it totally makes sense that they go for Korean rappers mostly as many Koreans don't speak English at all, Korean as a language has a different structure and there can be a lot of wordplay specific to their type of alphabet in their raps. And frankly as a German who's not bad at English, but it's so hard to understand the US rappers sometimes, and then the references that you can't pick on if you are not to deep in the slang
Jhope started as a street dancer, and has been a huge fan of J Cole, citing him as his muse for years. You can find references in Hip Hop Phile (2014): "Hope hope world, before I built my own world, there was Cole world When he lit up Friday night, I became more inspired to write my own music". Jhope's mixed tape was really titled Hope World. The group also reworked Born Sinner, renamed Born Singer, early on, but never officially released it until they asked for permission (it is a possibility the seed was planted then). It's on their recent PROOF anthology, and there's a live version from the desert. But the get together was probably conceived when the two J's met at Lollapalooza this past summer. Jhope, in case you didn't know, was a headliner and had just released a solo project, Jack in the Box. This was a beautiful meeting of chill, humble people who never just phone it in. Hobi wrote and co-produced the melody as well as recorded the whistling in the background. Jhope has said JCole is his favorite rapper. He was an award winning street dancer BEFORE joining BTS and he used to dance to Cole's music all the time. He said he wanted to do a song that went back to his roots... hence the mad respect of giving Cole 32 bars on his own track so that he can just dance and vibe to Cole. They met for the first time this past July when JHope headlined Lollapalooza. BTS covered "Born Sinner" with a track titled "Born Singer" in 2014. Cole gave permission this past Summer for them to release it officially so it is on their anthology album "Proof". BTS' leader, RM, also just released and album "Indigo" in December that has songs with Anderson Paak, Erykah Badu, Tablo, and others. Suga, the third rapper of BTS is about to start his first solo tour this April. You can see the moment the two met at Lolla on youtube. It was also put in a documentary that BigHit just relased called "J-Hope in the Box" that is about the making of, release, and performance of his album "Jack in the Box".
There are so many different aspects to this song and mv. Hobi was inspired and idolized JCole at the beginning of growing into a rapper; JCole waits to meet Hobie when he arrives at Lollapalooza, just to meet him which is saying something especially since he was the only artist who sold out the last night of the concert. In the video J-Hope is still on the streets and working on his dream of becoming a great rapper, J Cole a seasoned lyrical rapper is up on the rooftop and very successful - you don't see him on the streets because he is already seasoned as a rapper and put in his time. The respect that J-Hope has for J Cole - he gives him over a minute and a half to his own 30 seconds of rapping speaks volumes. J-Hope wrote a melody that would showcase J Cole. J Cole speaks J Hopes's name saying this is our world and then Hobi climbs to the roof where J Cole is because he is on his way. J-Hope is an outsider to the western rapping music world and J Cole is saying come on over... like Chris Martin/Coldplay. Oh yeah, one more thing... J-Hope goes back to the subways like when BTS first started, at the end of this mv you see J-Hope coming up out of the subway and then going to the roof with J Cole. One idol encourages and believes in another. There is room at the top for a Korean rapper too who crosses the language barrier. Respect man!

The rappers name all their influences in hip hop phile and most of them are old-school rappers. BORN SINGER is the BTS adaption of BORN SINNER by J.Cole in 2013 when they debuted and J.Cole gave them permission to use it for the first track of their 9th-anniversary anthology album on June 13, 2022. While there is a lot of hip-hop influence in the K-pop industry, BTS is one of the only groups that actually credit the people who created and shaped hip-hop. They are actual students of the game.

j-hope is known for his poetic lyricism. his middle and end rhyming schemes are crazy. j-hope often comes up with atypical song structures. he always leaves us wanting more. even though j-hope's verse is short, it's jam packed with meaning for army. even the music video has a some beautiful imagery for j-hope's fans. the memorial on the street is likely a reference to the tragedy in Itaewon on Halloween. fun fact, j-hope came up with the melody by randomly whistling. j-hope went back to his roots of street dance while his idol rapped. it was so meaningful to j-hope and his fans. i love J. Cole's verse and how genuinely nice he was to j-hope. the harmony was so beautiful. Love them both!

JHOPE is a part of south korean group BTS, they were initially a Hip Hop group then expanded to create their own genre of hip hop, rap, pop, many other styles. they have 3 rappers all write their music. This was an organic collaboration they met at Lollapalooza where J Cole played on Saturday and J-Hope played on Sunday to the biggest crowd in lollapalooza history. ARMY (The BTS fandom) came in force. J-Cole is J Hopes inspiration and this was a full cirlce moment He's talking to BTS and his fans with this one and vibing and showcasing his street dance roots during Coles verse.
There will be a j-hope remix without J Cole feature coming out soon, so it’s all by design that the collab version gives J Cole more bars to shine, entirely out of respect j-hope has for J Cole. I know a lot of ARMY are giving a lot of info about this song and its backstory, please allow me to give you a little more. Yes, J Hope considers J Cole his muse, it's why he goes by J Hope, and why his first mix tape was called "HopeWorld." This song and the whistle you hear is all J Hope. Hobi (his nickname) has said that he had a melody in his head and he would whistle it. Now his first real solo album was released last year in June, it's called "Jack In The Box." U should check it out, it may surprise you. On the album as an interlude you can hear this song, without the lyrics. And in July of last year at Lalapoolza, when J Hope not only headlined the final night, but he met J Cole then. During his performance, he played this song in between his dark and light sets. Was that the time they decided to collab, we may never know, but I do believe it was the first time J Cole heard it. I do love how Hobi was coming from one direction with what he wanted to say, and J Cole was coming from another direction, but somehow they become one direction at the end. J Cole may never know how much he has done for both J Hope as well as the rest of BTS, but I hope somewhere along the way he finds out. I will be forever grateful to him for giving Hobi this incredible gift.
This isn’t the song Hobi played at Lolla. It was the song “Music Box: Reflection” off his latest album (Jack in the Box). Not only was I at that concert, but I’ve watched it countless times as well, so I am sure of that.
KPoP is an industry. What the west is most familiar with is "Idol" music which is a subcategory of korean music. There is K hip hop, rnb, ballad, jazz, alternative, folk and rock. Jhope was a street performer that began with hip hop as a dancer. The art direction and style is reflective of JHopes origin story. BTS no longer "needs" collaborations with western artists. This was a special request from JHope to his "idol"JCole.
To me they never needed it, I always feel embrassed when some media is pushing who they want to cobalt with or some people pushing for it with western artists. BTS do not need it, they are bigger than that. But like J Hope and J Cole it is paying respect to someone he looks up to..

j-hope initially started dancing in third grade. He started pursuing street dance and performance seriously in middle school. j-hope seems to be a big fan of old school hip hop because that's the era of music he listened to while growing up and dancing. He has mentioned watching contemporary rappers in his live videos. Just a while ago, he shared a documentary of og street dancers from nyc on his IG. he continues to put the work in and has genuine love and respect for hip hop culture.

Boggles my mind when I hear someone doesn't understand the magnitude of BTS. Sold out Vegas, not just Sofi Stadium, but the city, 2 weekends in a row BEFORE the tickets went on sale. 200K tickets +, and million online and the arena next door.

You are asking the right question to the right people. BTS wanted to learn about the origins of hip hop. BTS came over to L.A. in 2014 to absorb the culture of hip hop. They took them to Crenshaw, Compton and the boys stayed in a scary pad in Downtown L.A. One of their trainers was Coolio, of Gangsters Paradise fame. Coolio was not easy on them. He would quiz them on the history of rap and If they boys missed a question, he'd make them do 25 push ups. He taught them about the importance of details and if you ever get into BTS you will realize that lesson did sink in. He also set up talent challenges for the boys to compete in. J.Cole has always been Jhope's idol. Jhope wrote his lyrics on Hip Hop Lover. I found out more about myself Hope world Before I made my own world, Cole world Ever since he shone on Friday nights I got inspiration and wrote my songs. Thank you for the great reaction. A lot of ARMYs have given you some background on our guys. I just want to say that, although BTS is not everybody's cup of tea, I've seen so many people (myself included) who realized that they are so much more than a boy band after giving them a chance. I really hope you at least give them a further listen. They are 7 of the kindest, funniest, most hard working, and humble guys who ever worked in the industry. And I truly respect them. I would recommend checking out On: Kinetic Manifesto and Mic Drop. Also, for rap line (RM, Suga, and J-Hope) I'd recommend Ugh! and Ddaeng and the DKDKTV "explained by a Korean" videos for them. They also have live performances for them (they don't have MV's). For solo work, I'd recommend Arson by J-Hope, Daechwita by Agust D, & Joke by RM. I'm not sure what genres you might like besides rap, so I'll just leave it at that for now. 😊

j-hope rapping and switching in two languages in every lines is kinda wild. j.cole & j-hope are both performers at Lollapalooza chicago, they met there. jhope dancing during Cole's verse is because j-hope before BTS used to dance to J.Cole songs back in the day. This like a visual homage paid to J.Cole by j-hope to show his genuine love for THE GOAT like J.Cole. we know J-Hope is already an established artist but the way they portray the MV and build he verses, it's almost like a hungry youngling asking for his one shot and a tired king aware he can't sit on the throne forever. I’m relation to J Cole being his inspiration, jhope starts where J Cole was in the video and walks ‘through life’ via the underground dancing to J Cole’s verse then makes his way up to the top of the building where J Cole already is. Symbolically, you can say J Hope through the video made his way to his idol who to him is already on too.

As a rapper, J.Cole has been a hero to J-Hope. On the Street is a song J-Hope made with J.Cole as a gift for their fans ARMY to say goodbye for a little while. It started with J-Hope's whistling accidentally, and J.Cole added his amazing verse to the melody and beat J-Hope made. I think it would be really meaningful for him to collaborate with J.Cole on a brief farewell song before joining the military. I can feel J-Hope showed great respect for him in this song. As an ARMY, I'm so happy with this collab.😭 BTS is consisting of three rappers and four vocalists. And all seven of them are excellent dancers. BTS members are about to join the military. The oldest member, Jin, already enlisted about 80 days ago and is serving under the Korean law, and J-Hope is going to join the army soon. Other five BTS members will also serve in the military and will be reunited in 2025. So they are briefly stopping their eight-year group activities and focusing on their solo work. They do a wide variety of music, but basically they are rooted in hip-hop. All seven members are participating in making their songs by writing, composing, and producing them. Now BTS is the biggest boy band in the world. But they started with a small company that almost went bankrupt, so they have been very looked down and hated by Korean broadcasting stations and other K-pop fandom. So they have struggled from the beginning to prove themselves. I highly recommend Mic Drop's MV and the live performances. (It's one of their billion-view music video.) The direction of Mic Drop's lyrics began with the idea of J-Hope. And 'Mic Drop' at the end of this music video is a performance created by BTS leader RM inspired by Barack Obama's speech. :) The lyrics of BTS' songs are based on their own experiences, and their albums are organic because they contain their growth narrative. J-Hope is first and foremost a street dancer. He is the Dance Leader and one of the 3 rappers of BTS. This song is a farewell to his fans because he has enlisted in the military. He has always considered J-Cole his inspiration to become a rapper. I think that's why J-Cole's feature is so long. Anything shorter would have been a sacrilege to J-Hope.
Something helpful to understand about Korea's history is that for most of it, they were under the rule of some other country, kingdom, or empire. They did not win full democratic autonomy in modern history until 1987. Let that sink in. As if they are part of a nationwide family, Korean people call everyone's parents "mom" and "dad," every male friend "brother," every female friend "sister," and so on. Close friends don't even bother with names, and will always address each other "Brother" and "Sister." Young people discovered western hip hop and R&B in 1992, shortly after the country was finally freed from authoritarianism and colonial rule. And it was a love affair from day one. There is respect, knowledge, and more importantly, an emotional understanding of the roots of black American music of all kinds, from jazz to blues to hip hop. They understand because of han. Sometimes the appreciation crosses over into cultural appropriation, because there are ignorant and racist people everywhere. But it's rare, and in most cases artists self-correct when they become educated about their errors.
I'll be totally transparent in my comment. First thing to know, BTS have three rappers, called RM and Suga with J-Hope. KHip-hop is a different scene, they have amazing music out there but a lot of Korean rappers - not all - either don't know about the hip-hop culture or they use it and don't give any respect/credits, it's mostly an aesthetic for them. However BTS is different, RM and Suga (the other two) were underground rappers since they were 13 years old and J-Hope was a street dancer - that's why you see him illustrating Cole's verse by dancing. They are fans of a lot of OGs, they always cited them as their inspirations including in their songs, they know about the culture, and always gave credits. RM collaborated with Warren G, Wale, Erykah Badu, and more - he has an upcoming collaboration on Pharrell's next album, Suga collaborated with Juice Wrld two times, I mean I could go on. As for this collaboration, when BTS debuted, not one month later they dropped - unofficially - the cover of "Born Sinner" to "Born Singer", which became a thing for BTS and our fanbase - ARMY. J-Hope dropped in 2018 a hip-hop mixtape named "Hope World" in reference of Cole World. Last year, BTS dropped an anthology, they contacted J. Cole to know if they could release the song officially, J. Cole agreed. Fast forward, a month later, J-Hope went to perform at Lollapalooza where he met J. Cole in person - you gotta know but J-Hope is a huge fan of J. Cole, he called him his muse - and after that, J-Hope likely contacted him to make this happen. J-Hope is going this month to serve in the South Korean military - as per mandatory - for about a year and half, he wanted to drop a song for the fans, as a gift, so it's meaningful for us. He cut short his verse to focus on dance - which is his beginning as he was a street dancer prior and gave his idol, Cole, the room to spit his bars as he respect him immensely. I'm just saying, BTS is crazy talented, they write their own lyrics - specially the rappers, they also produce and compose, their pen game is among the best if you want to check it out, from their hip-hop songs in their discography as a group - they have more than 300 songs from various genres - to their own solo work. RM recently released his album (he has two mixtapes prior), you can check "Still Life" ft. Anderson Paak, such a good song. J-Hope released also his album last June, that's why he was at Lollapalooza, I mean it's old school hip-hop/rock. I would say if you want to check his stuff you have "MORE" it's more rock, or any old school hip-hop b-sides like "Future" or "Safety Zone". As for Suga, he has an upcoming album, but already two mixtapes out, check out "Agust D" or "Deachwita" - his solo artist name is Agust D. Friday night lights inspired him to dance. He was originally a hip-hop street dancer until he got signed with bts. He didn't rap or sing until he got signed. Cole was and is his muse. This was his dream to dance to Cole. That's why he gave Cole the song. He named his album hope world after Cole world.

Trust me, he knows all about hop hip, he is a true artist in everyway! All of BTS are, with out a doubt. (oh and there are three rappers in BTS and 4 vocalists, jhope started as a dancer, for instance he was apart of a underground street dance crew called Neuron, but the other two rappers, who are RM and Suga, both started out as underground rappers) But continuing on, jhope, he constantly shares this stuff with us and shows respect and gives props. J. Cole is a huge influence on him, and is someone he has openly talked about many times, about being inspired by, etc... So "on the streets" also has to do with going back to jhope's roots, where he first started as a dancer on the streets, listening to musicians such as J. Cole. This is also why when J. Cole is spitting his verse, it is amazing and very iconic to see jhope street dancing at the same time, underground, in the subway station! And this song is a gift to Army (BTS fandom) and his jhope's fans, to everyone who has been with him and supporting him. He is going to be enlisting in the South Korean military soon. It is mandatory in South Korea for all men to serve in the military. So trust me, for Army there is definitely very deep meaning here, in more than one way. Y’all can TH-cam JHope meeting Jcole backstage at Lollopalooza for the first time and you’ll see the most wholesome interaction ever. JHope is part of the biggest group in the world but absolutely could not contain his fanboy energy when meeting his biggest musical hero, Jcole. And Cole was just so nice. They ended up exchanging numbers and thus this collab was born. This is also JHope’s last project for a while because he is about to enlist in the military (it’s still mandatory in South Korea because they are still at war with North Korea). So for Jcole to really take time to write a deep and insightful 32 bars for this collab really means a lot to us JHope fans.
I can’t speak for all K-rappers, but BTS definitely knows rap/hip hop history. They even wrote about their early influences and what it means to them in a song called Hip Hop Lover. J-Hope often references how J-Cole has been his music hero and a major influence from before BTS when he was a street dancer. His first mixtape was even called Hope World. Yes BTS rap line has pure hiphop influences, however the Korean Media and Korean Entertainment for Kpop idols were not ready for an idol with hiphop rap concept at that time thats why every album they slowly adopt and made new album that fit the "Kpop Idol" taste. Even now, Korea is not a hardcore rap fan coming from black rappers. They only know Epik High, Tiger Jk, and Jay Park style of rap which is not bad since they are Korean
The end kinda mirrors the start. I got like he would be talking to younger self, then kinda goes in the video a journey (signifying a lifes journey for how it started), ends up in the rooftop tapping Cole kinda signifying where he is now. Comfortable, happy but obviously in a middle of change.
So, a lot of people are reacting to j-hope for the first time and trying to understand why j-hope did the song structure/ verses the way he did. But I think many people struggle to understand his background and beginnings - which are in his “dance on the street”. So when you saw him give an extra verse to J.Cole on the song, it was because he was giving JC the verse to yes, express himself lyrically but also so j-hope has it to dance on top of. Every one of those dance moves were a throwback to moves he used in different performances or moments. So, this was to the fans of his dance history - j-hope on the street. I believe it meant more for him to have J. Cole with the space needed to express himself in verse while he could then dance on top of the beat.

Definitely, there is a lot of mutual respect in this collab. BTS did a song Born Singer in 2013 months after their debut based on J Cole's Born Sinner. There was a massive nod to their hip hop inspirations including J Cole who is a huge inspiration to J-HOPE particularly. There are nods to J Cole in a lot of his solo music. They never officially released the song, it was just available on Sound cloud until they released their anthology Proof last year which is when they contacted JCole to get the permissions. Since then JHope headlined at Lollapalooza and met J Cole there and I guess this collaboration idea was born. Also, one of the reasons J Hope dances here more than sings is because this was his nod to his roots as a street dancer and a goodbye for now to us, fans as he is going into obligatory military service in the next month or two. So there were Easter eggs in the mv for the fans, nods to his personality and background. 💜 I'd recommend to check out Cypher Pt.3 Killer from their latest concert in Busan in 2022 with English subs. The rapline of BTS absolutely slaughtered it. You'll get a kick out of it. It was a free concert by the way for 50-70K. And it was sooo good!

As big as Jcole is and how respected he is as an rapper, Jhope did not get on this collab to cross over to the American industry for popularity or exposure. Jhope is just as big of an artist and both are in their own rights. This may not be as well known since alot of people are not tuned to the other music generes and what Kpop is or the current music trend is going. Jhope help produce and write this song to dedicate it as his last song for his fans before enlisting to the military. He has always respected and mentioned how much JCole was an influence to him as an artist. JHope along with his group BTS has crossed paths with JCole in the past. They even covered one of his song "Born Sinner" long time ago in their younger days coming up. I'm sure JHope wanted to give JCole a bigger role in this song as his purpose was to show his respect for JCole as an artist. I believe his interpretention for this song was the fact that he started as a dancer. JHope is a rapper, producer, singer and dancer so he wanted to reflect the old days when he used to post live videos of him dancing for his fans. Sometimes alot to JColes tracks and those videos of him freestyling back then were called "Hope on the Street"...

Thank you for a fair and open minded reaction. Since this song dropped I have seen a disheartening amount of negativity towards J Hope. You were correct that BTS have strong roots in hip hop. Two of the three rappers did come from the underground scene and because the group was changed up from being strictly hip hop to a kpop group they were catching it from both sides. The underground rappers were calling them sellouts and the kpop community said they didn't meet the beauty standards of being a kpop idol. They were also shaking up the kpop industry as their small independent label was not following the industry 'rules'. They grew their fanbase by posting vlogs prior to debut and releasing songs on SoundCloud for free. From the first album on, RM, Suga and J Hope were writing their own rap lyrics and songs for the group. Suga was producing beats. They also had a few in house producers instrumental in creating the music. All the members write and produce at this point. At that time it was not common for idols to have creative freedom/input. J Hope started as a hip-hop dancer prior to joining bts. He has cited J Cole as a big influence on him when he began writing his own lyrics and beats. He learned to rap practicing with RM and Suga. All three have their own distinct styles which keeps things interesting. These three are true lovers of hip-hop and continually pay homage to their rap influences. Yes BTS rap line has pure hiphop influences, however the Korean Media and Korean Entertainment for Kpop idols were not ready for an idol with hiphop rap concept at that time thats why every album they slowly adopt and made new album that fit the "Kpop Idol" taste. Even now, Korea is not a hardcore rap fan coming from black rappers. They only know Epik High, Tiger Jk, and Jay Park style of rap which is not bad since they are Korean

Hobi wrote and co-produced the melody as well as recorded the whistling in the background. Jhope has said JCole is his favorite rapper. He was an award winning street dancer BEFORE joining BTS and he used to dance to Cole's music all the time. He said he wanted to do a song that went back to his roots... hence the mad respect of giving Cole 32 bars on his own track so that he can just dance and vibe to Cole. They met for the first time this past July when JHope headlined Lollapalooza. BTS covered "Born Sinner" with a track titled "Born Singer" in 2014. Cole gave permission this past Summer for them to release it officially so it is on their anthology album "Proof". BTS' leader, RM, also just released and album "Indigo" in December that has songs with Anderson Paak, Erykah Badu, Tablo, and others. Suga, the third rapper of BTS is about to start his first solo tour this April.

There are so many different aspects to this song and mv. Hobi was inspired and idolized JCole at the beginning of growing into a rapper; JCole waits to meet Hobie when he arrives at Lollapalooza, just to meet him which is saying something especially since he was the only artist who sold out the last night of the concert. In the video J-Hope is still on the streets and working on his dream of becoming a great rapper, J Cole a seasoned lyrical rapper is up on the rooftop and very successful - you don't see him on the streets because he is already seasoned as a rapper and put in his time. The respect that J-Hope has for J Cole - he gives him over a minute and a half to his own 30 seconds of rapping speaks volumes. J-Hope wrote a melody that would showcase J Cole. J Cole speaks J Hopes's name saying this is our world and then Hobi climbs to the roof where J Cole is because he is on his way. J-Hope is an outsider to the western rapping music world and J Cole is saying come on over... like Chris Martin/Coldplay. Oh yeah, one more thing... J-Hope goes back to the subways like when BTS first started, at the end of this mv you see J-Hope coming up out of the subway and then going to the roof with J Cole. One idol encourages and believes in another. There is room at the top for a Korean rapper too who crosses the language barrier. Respect man!

Yes, J Hope considers J Cole his muse, it's why he goes by J Hope, and why his first mix tape was called "HopeWorld."
This song and the whistle you hear is all J Hope. Hobi (his nickname) has said that he had a melody in his head and he would whistle it. Now his first real solo album was released last year in June, it's called "Jack In The Box." U should check it out, it may surprise you. On the album as an interlude you can hear this song, without the lyrics. And in July of last year at Lalapoolza, when J Hope not only headlined the final night, but he met J Cole then. During his performance, he played this song in between his dark and light sets. Was that the time they decided to collab, we may never know, but I do believe it was the first time J Cole heard it.
I do love how Hobi was coming from one direction with what he wanted to say, and J Cole was coming from another direction, but somehow they become one direction at the end. J Cole may never know how much he has done for both J Hope as well as the rest of BTS, but I hope somewhere along the way he finds out. I will be forever grateful to him for giving Hobi this incredible gift.

KPoP is an industry. What the west is most familiar with is "Idol" music which is a subcategory of korean music. There is K hip hop, rnb, ballad, jazz, alternative, folk and rock. Jhope was a street performer that began with hip hop as a dancer. The art direction and style is reflective of JHopes origin story. BTS no longer "needs" collaborations with western artists. This was a special request from JHope to his "idol"JCole.
To me they never needed it, I always feel embrassed when some media is pushing who they want to cobalt with or some people pushing for it with western artists. BTS do not need it, they are bigger than that. But like J Hope and J Cole it is paying respect to someone he looks up to..

j-hope initially started dancing in third grade. He started pursuing street dance and performance seriously in middle school. j-hope seems to be a big fan of old school hip hop because that's the era of music he listened to while growing up and dancing. He has mentioned watching contemporary rappers in his live videos. Just a while ago, he shared a documentary of og street dancers from nyc on his IG. he continues to put the work in and has genuine love and respect for hip hop culture.

Boggles my mind when I hear someone doesn't understand the magnitude of BTS. Sold out Vegas, not just Sofi Stadium, but the city, 2 weekends in a row BEFORE the tickets went on sale. 200K tickets +, and million online and the arena next door.

You are asking the right question to the right people. BTS wanted to learn about the origins of hip hop. BTS came over to L.A. in 2014 to absorb the culture of hip hop. They took them to Crenshaw, Compton and the boys stayed in a scary pad in Downtown L.A. One of their trainers was Coolio, of Gangsters Paradise fame. Coolio was not easy on them. He would quiz them on the history of rap and If they boys missed a question, he'd make them do 25 push ups. He taught them about the importance of details and if you ever get into BTS you will realize that lesson did sink in. He also set up talent challenges for the boys to compete in. J.Cole has always been Jhope's idol. Jhope wrote his lyrics on Hip Hop Lover.

Thank you for the great reaction. A lot of ARMYs have given you some background on our guys. I just want to say that, although BTS is not everybody's cup of tea, I've seen so many people (myself included) who realized that they are so much more than a boy band after giving them a chance. I really hope you at least give them a further listen. They are 7 of the kindest, funniest, most hard working, and humble guys who ever worked in the industry. And I truly respect them. I would recommend checking out On: Kinetic Manifesto and Mic Drop. Also, for rap line (RM, Suga, and J-Hope) I'd recommend Ugh! and Ddaeng and the DKDKTV "explained by a Korean" videos for them. They also have live performances for them (they don't have MV's). For solo work, I'd recommend Arson by J-Hope, Daechwita by Agust D, & Joke by RM. I'm not sure what genres you might like besides rap, so I'll just leave it at that for now. 😊

Cole is his *muse.* The behind the scenes is up here in YT if you're interested, it shows a bit of their (Cole & Hobi) interaction and J-hope's freestyle to the song, it also explains some part of the MV ^^ The last scene of them shaking hands come from Jermaine asking Hobi to add something, and that's how we got the handshake.

J-hope just went with the flow while dancing, being a street dancer of origin, hip-hop runs in his blood. I suggest y'all react to J-hope's Chicken Noodle Soup (which he payed the rights for and Young B & Webstar thanked him), the lyrics touches on his passion for dancing. And yes they know hip-hop and it's history because they were once in a reality show called "American Hustle Life" where they learned all about hip-hop back in 2014, and BTS started of as a hip-hop group that's why the first two members (RM & Suga) to join BTS are underground rappers, J-hope is the 3rd and he's a well known dancer even before becoming an idol, he's known as "Smile Hoya." He felt out of place so he learned how to rap with the help of the first two members (RM & Suga).
When J-hope was young, he listened to "Friday Night Lights" by Cole and felt inspired to create his own beats. That's why he refers to J. Cole as his "muse." They have a song called "Hip-hop Lover" and he referenced J. Cole. BTS also sampled "Born Sinner" and called it "Born Singer." J-hope has a mixtape in 2018 called "Hope World" (Cole World) so yeah... Hobi respects J. Cole and hip-hop a lot. He grew up feeling hip-hop with his body. J-hope does freestyles on livestreams and it's called "Hope On The Street" (H.O.T.S) where you'll see him dancing to various songs, mostly rap songs you don't expect someone will dance on (he literally dances to any type of music, even if it's a music box 😭). This is why in the MV he danced to J. Cole's verse because that's where he started, underground street dancing to J. Cole's song and other hip-hop music. They were messaging each other and J. Cole asked how long should he make it, J-hope said to however long he needs to say his message 💗 huge respect (J-hope has a version with just him but it's not released yet). He has crazy body control and musicality, he never misses a beat from his heels and to the tips of his fingers up to his head flicks.

There are so many Korean rappers that smack the shit out of some of the best USA rappers... In all South Korea, Philosophy it's a big thing so their lyrics are usually full of doubles ajd triples or ar simply so good metaphores and deep lyrics that hit u in the guts... jhope dancing during Cole's verse is because j-hope before BTS used to dance to J.Cole songs back in the day. This like a visual homage paid to J.Cole by j-hope to show his genuine love for THE GOAT like J.Cole.
we know J-Hope is already an established artist but the way they portray the MV and build he verses, it's almost like a hungry youngling asking for his one shot and a tired king aware he can't sit on the throne forever. J-Hope is still on the street level/subway talking about what he's doing and what he needs to accomplish, while Cole stays solid on the top of the building, all alone and thinking about the path he's already taken. BTS came here when they were really young and trained with Warren G and Coolio to learn hiphop. It can be seen on American Hustle Life. They were out on the street handing out flyers for their free concert and now they sell out Wembley.

Did anyone mention here that the beginning of this video is filmed at the same location as J Cole’s MV Simba? I’m relation to J Cole being his inspiration, jhope starts where J Cole was in the video and walks ‘through life’ via the underground dancing to J Cole’s verse then makes his way up to the top of the building where J Cole already is. Symbolically, you can say J Hope through the video made his way to his idol who to him is already on too.

J-Hope is one of the main dancers and dance leader of BTS. He was originally a street dancer, but his talent as a rapper blossomed as he became BTS.
As a rapper, J.Cole has been a hero to J-Hope. On the Street is a song J-Hope made with J.Cole as a gift for their fans ARMY to say goodbye for a little while. It started with J-Hope's whistling accidentally, and J.Cole added his amazing verse to the melody and beat J-Hope made. I think it would be really meaningful for him to collaborate with J.Cole on a brief farewell song before joining the military. I can feel J-Hope showed great respect for him in this song.

BTS is consisting of three rappers and four vocalists. And all seven of them are excellent dancers.
BTS members are about to join the military. The oldest member, Jin, already enlisted about 80 days ago and is serving under the Korean law, and J-Hope is going to join the army soon. Other five BTS members will also serve in the military and will be reunited in 2025. So they are briefly stopping their eight-year group activities and focusing on their solo work.
They do a wide variety of music, but basically they are rooted in hip-hop.
All seven members are participating in making their songs by writing, composing, and producing them.
Now BTS is the biggest boy band in the world. But they started with a small company that almost went bankrupt, so they have been very looked down and hated by Korean broadcasting stations and other K-pop fandom. So they have struggled from the beginning to prove themselves.
I highly recommend Mic Drop's MV and the live performances. (It's one of their billion-view music video.)
The direction of Mic Drop's lyrics began with the idea of J-Hope.
And 'Mic Drop' at the end of this music video is a performance created by BTS leader RM inspired by Barack Obama's speech. :)
The lyrics of BTS' songs are based on their own experiences, and their albums are organic because they contain their growth narrative.
It will also be fun to listen to their albums in order and analyze them. :)

J-Hope is first and foremost a street dancer. He is the Dance Leader and one of the 3 rappers of BTS. This song is a farewell to his fans because he has enlisted in the military. He has always considered J-Cole his inspiration to become a rapper. I think that's why J-Cole's feature is so long. Anything shorter would have been a sacrilege to J-Hope.
Something helpful to understand about Korea's history is that for most of it, they were under the rule of some other country, kingdom, or empire. They did not win full democratic autonomy in modern history until 1987. Let that sink in. There is a defining concept in Korean culture called "han" that Korean society, art, and music are influenced by.
The best way to describe han is a collective feeling of despair, grief, anger, and resentment shared by all Korean people. As if they are part of a nationwide family, Korean people call everyone's parents "mom" and "dad," every male friend "brother," every female friend "sister," and so on. Close friends don't even bother with names, and will always address each other "Brother" and "Sister."
Young people discovered western hip hop and R&B in 1992, shortly after the country was finally freed from authoritarianism and colonial rule. And it was a love affair from day one. There is respect, knowledge, and more importantly, an emotional understanding of the roots of black American music of all kinds, from jazz to blues to hip hop. They understand because of han.
Sometimes the appreciation crosses over into cultural appropriation, because there are ignorant and racist people everywhere. But it's rare, and in most cases artists self-correct when they become educated about their errors.
I'll be totally transparent in my comment.
First thing to know, BTS have three rappers, called RM and Suga with J-Hope.
KHip-hop is a different scene, they have amazing music out there but a lot of Korean rappers - not all - either don't know about the hip-hop culture or they use it and don't give any respect/credits, it's mostly an aesthetic for them.
However BTS is different, RM and Suga (the other two) were underground rappers since they were 13 years old and J-Hope was a street dancer - that's why you see him illustrating Cole's verse by dancing.
They are fans of a lot of OGs, they always cited them as their inspirations including in their songs, they know about the culture, and always gave credits. RM collaborated with Warren G, Wale, Erykah Badu, and more - he has an upcoming collaboration on Pharrell's next album, Suga collaborated with Juice Wrld two times, I mean I could go on.
As for this collaboration, when BTS debuted, not one month later they dropped - unofficially - the cover of "Born Sinner" to "Born Singer", which became a thing for BTS and our fanbase - ARMY.
J-Hope dropped in 2018 a hip-hop mixtape named "Hope World" in reference of Cole World.
Last year, BTS dropped an anthology, they contacted J. Cole to know if they could release the song officially, J. Cole agreed.
Fast forward, a month later, J-Hope went to perform at Lollapalooza where he met J. Cole in person - you gotta know but J-Hope is a huge fan of J. Cole, he called him his muse - and after that, J-Hope likely contacted him to make this happen.
J-Hope is going this month to serve in the South Korean military - as per mandatory - for about a year and half, he wanted to drop a song for the fans, as a gift, so it's meaningful for us.
He cut short his verse to focus on dance - which is his beginning as he was a street dancer prior and gave his idol, Cole, the room to spit his bars as he respect him immensely.
I'm just saying, BTS is crazy talented, they write their own lyrics - specially the rappers, they also produce and compose, their pen game is among the best if you want to check it out, from their hip-hop songs in their discography as a group - they have more than 300 songs from various genres - to their own solo work.
RM recently released his album (he has two mixtapes prior), you can check "Still Life" ft. Anderson Paak, such a good song.
J-Hope released also his album last June, that's why he was at Lollapalooza, I mean it's old school hip-hop/rock. I would say if you want to check his stuff you have "MORE" it's more rock, or any old school hip-hop b-sides like "Future" or "Safety Zone".
As for Suga, he has an upcoming album, but already two mixtapes out, check out "Agust D" or "Deachwita" - his solo artist name is Agust D.

This was his dream to dance to Cole. That's why he gave Cole the song. He named his album hope world after Cole world.

You should check out "Arson", by jhope. Trust me, he knows all about hop hip, he is a true artist in everyway! All of BTS are, with out a doubt.
(oh and there are three rappers in BTS and 4 vocalists, jhope started as a dancer, for instance he was apart of a underground street dance crew called Neuron, but the other two rappers, who are RM and Suga, both started out as underground rappers)
But continuing on, jhope, he constantly shares this stuff with us and shows respect and gives props. J. Cole is a huge influence on him, and is someone he has openly talked about many times, about being inspired by, etc... So "on the streets" also has to do with going back to jhope's roots, where he first started as a dancer on the streets, listening to musicians such as J. Cole. This is also why when J. Cole is spitting his verse, it is amazing and very iconic to see jhope street dancing at the same time, underground, in the subway station! And this song is a gift to Army (BTS fandom) and his jhope's fans, to everyone who has been with him and supporting him. He is going to be enlisting in the South Korean military soon. It is mandatory in South Korea for all men to serve in the military. So trust me, for Army there is definitely very deep meaning here, in more than one way. There is a lot of meaning in the entire song, in Jhope's part, in J. Cole's part, again just in all of it.

Mini-Background on collab: JCole went to meet jhope when jhope closed Lollapalooza. The rap line have other collabs with American hiphop artists like Wale, JuiceWrld & Nicki Minaj. The BTS rap line are for real. All of them paid their dues on the the street before joining an agency.
Y’all can TH-cam JHope meeting Jcole backstage at Lollopalooza for the first time and you’ll see the most wholesome interaction ever. JHope is part of the biggest group in the world but absolutely could not contain his fanboy energy when meeting his biggest musical hero, Jcole. And Cole was just so nice. They ended up exchanging numbers and thus this collab was born. This is also JHope’s last project for a while because he is about to enlist in the military (it’s still mandatory in South Korea because they are still at war with North Korea). So for Jcole to really take time to write a deep and insightful 32 bars for this collab really means a lot to us JHope fans.
